GOP to Cheney-Go home and shut up Empty

It seems that GOP Congressmen think Dick Cheney is hurting their cause. With rumors starting to circulate Washington that while he was VP, Dick Cheney personally supervised an assissination ring, one has to wonder why he is speaking up at all. Does he think talking to the media will lessen the chances that he might be prosecuted? That strategy didn't work for Blago and I don't think it will work for Cheney either.

Rep. John Duncan Jr. (R-Tenn.) said, “He became so unpopular while he was in the White House that it would probably be better for us politically if he wouldn’t be so public…But he has the right to speak out since he’s a private citizen.”

Since Dick Cheney is no longer in office I'm actually more concerned that President Obama and the Democrat controlled Congress and the Treasury Secretary are continuing efforts to assassinate the value of the US dollar.

I am not sure why you apparently wish to abate the right of private citizen Cheney of free expression. Why do you care what he says today? And talk about misleading thread titles! You're one to talk. Since when does 1 House member speak for the entire party short of at least a formal address? Clearly this ain't that.

Looks like this thread is just another example of double standards from a Democratic apologist, I guess. Laughing

I never made any claims that I wanted Cheney to shut up. I hope he continues to make appearances on CNN. As the only person in the Bush admin. who was less popular than George Bush, I think he hurts the GOP's chances for regaining power everytime he opens his mouth. If the GOP continues to fail, issues that I care about like a national health care plan, better schools, renewable power, etc., have a better chance of becoming reality.

Cheney is one of our best examples of why the Reub party is in the sewer. No one takes anything he says seriously except for the hardcore shrinking base of the GOP. Obama made a fool out of him on 60 minutes last Sunday.

Personally I don't get it. I don't see how Cheney was any worse than the rest of them?

And what do you base that on?

PRESIDENT OBAMA:

I fundamentally disagree with Dick Cheney. Not surprisingly. You know, I think that-- Vice President Cheney has been-- at the head of a-- movement whose notion is somehow that we can't reconcile our core values, our Constitution, our belief that we don't torture, with our national security interests. I think he's drawing the l-- wrong lesson from history.

The facts don't bear him out. I think he is-- that attitude, that philosophy has done incredible damage-- to our image and position in the world. I mean, the fact of the matter is after all these years how many convictions actually came out of Guantanamo? How many-- how many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney? It hasn't made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment. Which means that there is constant effective recruitment of-- Arab fighters and Muslim fighters against U.S. interests all around the world.

STEVE KROFT:

Some of it being organized by a few people who were released from Guantanamo.

PRESIDENT OBAMA:

Well there is no doubt that-- we have not done a particularly effective job in sorting through who are truly dangerous individuals that we've got to-- make sure are not a threat to us, who are folks that we just swept up. The whole premise of Guantanamo promoted by Vice President Cheney was that somehow the American system of justice was not up to the task of dealing with these terrorists.

I fundamentally disagree with that. Now-- do these folks deserve Miranda rights? Do they deserve to be treated like a shoplifter-- down the block? Of course not.

STEVE KROFT:

What do you do with those people?

PRESIDENT OBAMA:

Well, I think we're going to have to figure out a mechanism to make sure that they not released and do us harm. But-- do so in a way that is consistent with both our traditions, sense of due process, international law. But this is-- this is the legacy that's been left behind. And, you know, I'm surprised that-- the Vice President is eager-- to defend-- a legacy that was unsustainable

let's assume that we didn't change these practices. How-- how long are we going to go? Are we going to just keep on going until-- you know, the entire Muslim world and Arab world-- despises us? Do we think that's really going to make us safer? I-- I don't know-- a lot of thoughtful thinkers, liberal or conservative-- who think that that was the right approach.

Well actually I thought that made Obama look pretty stupid and petty. Put another way it made him look like the fool.

Additionally, after all the time he was a US Senator, 2 or so years campaigning to be Presdient, and almost 3 months in office as President he STILL says he doesn't know the solution. Now that's plumb stupid! especially since he campaigned ON that very issue of the detainees. Twisted Evil

Really? Then maybe you can fill us in how many terrorists were actually brought to justice during the 8 years of Bush/Cheney?

You can't even get the length of Obama's presidency right. Rolling Eyes FYI,it's 64 days to be exact.
