Rush says "I hope Obama fails"

This is what Rush Limbaugh has publicly said about Barack Obama becoming President.

Everybody thinks it’s outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, “Oh, you can’t do that.” Why not? Why is it any different, what’s new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what’s gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it? I don’t care what the Drive-By story is. I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: “Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails.” Somebody’s gotta say it.

I think it's pretty damn pathetic when someone who makes a living expressing his opinion makes a statement like this. I think this kind of sentiment is harmful to our country. I am glad that Rush is exposing himself for the fraud he really is. I would hope that the reaction of the American people is as strong as it was when Don Imus made his ill considered remarks on his radio show.[b]

I do believe that Rush was taken out of context just like I have been screeming for many years. If you want to slam a guy, then do it fairly and honestly.

There has been very little honesty over the years in trying to bring him down. Other than taking him out of context or outright lying about what he actually says, about the only thing most of his opponents can do is bring up his multiple divorces, his weight, or his Oxycontin addiction, which does nothing at all to discredit his ideas. Anyone who tries to debate him honestly generally gets his ass handed to him on a platter.

There's a difference between criticizing policy and openly hoping for failure. Limbaugh and the base of the Repubs that he represents are the reason your party is in the toilet and will be staying there.

When asked about his hopes for the Obama presidency, he said, I hope he fails.
I don't think it is taken out of context at all. Our country is in the midst of the largest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Unemployment is rising, home foreclosures are at an all-time high, trillions of dollars of mutual fund assets that people had counted on to fund their retirements are gone,etc.,etc. If Obama "fails", the misery that this economic meltdown is creating for millions could stretch out for years. Why would any American hope for such a fate for our country? This is just a lame attempt on Rush's part to build up ratings by attracting publicity for his radio.

Don Imus had his show canceled by CBS and was off the air for over 6 months for his ill considered remarks. He caused both himself and his wife considerable embarrassment, undercutting a lifetime of charitable work the Imus' have done. However, he is considered rehabilitated now,and has returned to broadcasting.

I've gloated when my predictions have come true. I never ever said I "hoped" bush would fail.

Yeah, people as a whole know better than to take anything Rush says seriously. Sure he's got his hardcore ultra conservative base that will never abandon him, but the hardcore leftist liberals have their people too. The problem here is that people don't understand radio audiences. Oracle can back me up on this. For example Howard Stern's only purpose on the air was to cater to people who wanted to hear him push the envelope. They'd listen in to see how close he'd teeter on the line without crossing it for shock value. Stern moved over to satellite radio said whatever he wanted and once there was no longer a line he had to teeter on it was no longer amusing or shocking for the people that listened to him for that purpose. Rush's job is to get listeners. That's his only job in the world which is exactly why he said, "Well I hope people report on this all day." That's free advertising.

Absolutely. Just look at how much mileage he's getting out of this flap. If his foes really want to marginalize the guy, they should just ignore him. Instead, Rush is laughing all the way to the bank.

What ever happened to the tolerance we keep hearing about from certain factions? Does it only apply to them and their ideas?
Oh, as a republican, I think rush is an a-hole. He is an entertainer and and editorialist, not a journalist, not a leader of the GOP, not an elected official.

I disagree wholeheartedly,Scorpion. I could care less how much Rush or any of the wingnut propaganda specialists earn. Challenging their rhetoric and pointing out their deceptive slants and hypocrisy is the best way to fight back. They have too many kool-aid drinkers listening to them as it is,to simply ignore them.

one of the first acts by many freshmen (calling themselves the "Dittohead Caucus") was to award Limbaugh the title of "honorary member of Congress" in recognition of his support of their efforts during this period
I have a huge problem with any member of the media proclaiming that they hope that our President "fails". I also believe that many of the corporations that buy advertising on Rush's radio show are going to be opposed to his sentiments. I think you hold him accountable for what he says on the air.
