Court rules Illinois public works plan is legal
Quote :
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. | The Illinois Supreme Court unanimously upheld a law Monday that created a $31 billion statewide construction program, rejecting arguments that lawmakers improperly mixed together different issues in a single piece of legislation.

The court held that all parts of the law had "a natural and logical connection" to the public works program.

The ruling averts a threat to the thousands of jobs created by the construction projects and removes a roadblock to allowing video gambling at bars, restaurants and truck stops across Illinois.

Lawmakers approved the public works program in 2009 after years of paralysis under former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. They decided to pay for the construction by raising taxes on liquor and candy, as well as legalizing video gambling.
IMO,legalizing video gambling is a terrible idea. This will take a while to get implemented, the longer the better.. If anyone ever had concerns about the wrong people being involved with gaming, this is it.

Illegal video gambling has been going on in Illinois bars for decades. The state has spent millions trying to eliminate these machines and has failed miserably. IMO, legalizing and generating revenue from video poker is a smart move.

I agree with you Sparks. The thing is, I witnessed a white truck hauling away video gambling machines decades ago, along Calumet City in alleys. What a waste, they just got new ones.

Prevalent in Will County, Crook County, Lake County, the trouble is, even if they regulate them, they can't. The bars have certain "Pay Days" (cash only), and you usually have to wait until a MONDAY LOL. When they say, "Monday", you go in any other day of the week but Monday. Heck, you wait over a week if they know you. How stupid is this??? People find a way not to have the state or FEDS dictate what a good time they have. Hell, anyone check Obambas' breath after their many dinner partis, outings, basketball/baseball/golf outings???? He would be arrested, I guarantee you after his White Hussini Events. Just like Michelle, do as I say, "not as I do". She no way is an example of any former first ladies. They are pigs at a trough for one year only.(Off-topic, but on topic).

How are they going to monitor gambling machines when the bar owner gets a "kick-back, can rig it, and etc.?)

It won't raise revenue unless they employ undercovers. Great for job creation, bad for taking cops off the street. They always find a way not to give gov't money to spend overseas, instead of funding their own business.

It's a joke. The bar keepers/owners know how to skim, having the smoking taken away, they form a "pot" whereby you donate five bucks to smoke and help pay the fines to keep on patonizing a bar where everyone smokes.

The video machine can be manipulated. How stupid are these politicians? The more they intrude on private businesses, the more they screw themselves. Duh.

By the way, I know a lot of cops who patronize bars where smoking is allowed so don't argue with me. Double standards do exist...I know one cop's name from Hammond, who patronized State Line prostitutes back in the late nineties. I know who told me; she has felonies, and if approached, I'll just give the address. She's a heroin addict...still thriving and dealing and I haven't seen her since 2004. News travels.

People hired in bars you trust to run know how to rig machines so they win jackpots all the time. I know...I witnesed it.

Read my post above. The revenue will not be what they anticipate. Riggig is a known factor. I know people who sell houses in a family and demand cash and hide it in barns.

Try again..cuz people are sick of supporting gov't aholes. R, D, or Independent. All are full of horsehit whith out salt.

If they cut gov't in half, pay their own 401K, paid soc. sec, no bodyguards, and paid for their own insurance, entertainment, maybe they will know exactly how the rest of us that support them live. They have no clue.

Kiss your job goodbye in the near future. You may be in a union, but it was my friend who hired you. He got smart and took early retirement, four/five years ago at the steel mill. Had more brains than you. (Wisconsin Steel never gave their workers their pensions and the same will happen to YOU.) The same is happening with my union-carpenter nephew who makes over $40.00 an hour...but lives off of unemployment periodically throughout the year. If you spread that $40.00 an hour before and having to live off unemployment, unemployment and when it runs out, he may as well work at Burger King.

Even he said that. Your day will come, if it has not, already. My friend who was employedat the steel mill, was a CEO, knowing the economy, walked away while he was ahead He worked a the steel company like you do. Don't be shocked if you are out of a job and pension in the near future which caused him to retire early. Also, his wife, who worked there, retired six months later taking early retirment to travel with him, was shortly diagnosed as having cervical/pancreatic cancer cause by the pollution and disregard of EPA regulations. They devotedheir whole career to the STEEL MILL, took early retireent to enjoy lie while young enough, foregoing working longer then die, only to wind up with trips to the Dr's and shpping for wigs. Nice retirement, huh? Your day will come. Don't think it can't happen to you.It will. The steel mill in NW Indiana is out-dated, dangerous and will be shut down by the EPA.

I suppose you could keep kissing azz in Hammond and get a political job...why else would you re-educate yourself and go into another field, utilizing your "transferable skills?"

You hate challenge, and you are sticking it out in Hammond because your only chance if the day comes is to remind the mayor how you are "so involved and I know this or that".
Who ya fooling? You'll flunk on the personality test, the "What do you exactly know from your previous job, that would benefit our entiety?"

YOU: "I attended a lot of neighborhood watch crimes. I know how to re-connect wires cut in half from smashed flat sreen TVs and other electronics". Not stolen, SMASHE y trespassers. This will cut costs for homowners not wanting to raise their homeowners' insurance and I can assure you I won't report the cash payments, and help hide the real crimes that occur on a daily basis, even 10 times on the same 175th corner of Columbia in the past month". Our citizens will feel much safer this way!"

What bothers me is that a lot of people who can least afford it are going to get hurt by this. While I'm in favor of legalized gambling,I'm not in favor of bringing it into your corner pub and the temptation that it will bring..

It's all going to be on the level.

Nothing wrong with that if their customers agree to it.

I'll answer you later, Artie. Owned a bar with my ex, you can't possiby know what I found out later.

NO WAY. Legalizing it...will do no good. There isn't a way to legalize it to generate the taxes. There are so many tricks, I wouldn't generate for thieves in Washington if I owed one. There are ways around it, saw it and know. They exist with or without laws/legislation.

Trust me, profits are sparingly and no one is gonna take what little they make off of gamblers to pay what little profit they make.

They exist (the gambling machines) without the law. Ha.

And nothing has or will change. Smoking laws - ha. Casinos got around that by providing a "Smoker's Club" in IL. Bars get around the smoking by adding a bucket (Crow BAR) in South or East Chicago. Bocci Ball tournaments with betting still exist since when I was introduced to it, but did not participate, at select bars in the same area. Card games held in homes still existed al night long with high stakes..

Video machines are still in every bar even in Crook County, Will County. I don't visit unless it's to order a really bargain for ALL BEEF HOTDOG or Corned Beef Ssndwiches. Even homemade hamburgers. Video machines? Like giving boats money without winning.

It existed even after the FEDS confisicated the machines. The machines are still there, in evey bar where they hit. I was in the bar business. I can tell you where they try and sneak drugs, where they snort them, and when machines are replaced.Non of ours got cinfisicated, but led us to a barteder we trusted and found out how he rigged it, failed to ring up charges on the cash register...and spet time in jail for it.

It's a no-brainer that I don't condone. Impossible to control. Trust me, I know.

Visit the bars in Indiana...no control; no different. Do you think people stick money in a machine thinking it's money "for amusement" sto blow with no payback?

Missouri only has 12% immigrants. Out of the 12% immigrants, they run illegal gambling machines...and report if some Amrican thinks they can install them to "compete". My best friend is my cousin and everytime she got a machine, the immigrant reported her, tho he was illegal and claimed he stole his main source of "income" that he doesn't report to the IRS.

She held a ligitimate business for over thirty years, reported taxes, but wasn't allowed a video machine an illegal had three of, with no other business but that. Go figure. She owns a home, rental property, strore, and works for the office of the private resort area. The jerk that gets the machine can't even sell the cofee he makes.

She reported him. What did SHE have to loose? Sadly, he got his machines replaced, and sadly, there is a problem with reporting...the FEDS don't give a crap about Americans. Only illegals.

Update:

The communities would have to opt in, not opt out. I just read that this a.m., somewhere.

Dead issue, I believe.

IL sucks.
