From his "state of the city" speech yesterday:
- Quote :
- "We'll also ask the State Legislature to require all guns sold in New York to include micro-stamping technology, which helps police connect crime scenes to guns, and to require gun dealers to conduct background checks on everyone they hire. Would you let a convicted drug dealer work in a drug store? Not a chance. It's just common sense."
The problem is micro-stamping is, as yet, unreliable and still subject to much controversy.
According to a press release from U.C. Davis:
- Quote :
- New technology to link cartridge cases to guns by engraving microscopic codes on the firing pins is feasible but did not work well for all guns and ammunition tested by UC Davis' forensic science program. More testing in a wider range of firearms is needed to determine the costs and feasibility of a statewide program of microstamping, as called for by proposed state legislation, the researchers said.
And yes, I agree that a background check for employees of "gun dealers" is a good idea.
Wouldn't it be better to finally close the revolving doors of the justice system and agressively enforce existing laws instead of making law-abiding citizens dig deeper into their own pockets?
