HAMMOND | Three men and a juvenile were arrested Thursday during pre-dawn police raids on several locations of alleged drug sales and gang activity in the Hessville neighborhood. One of the men arrested was Antonio Andrade, whose son, Alex, was a Hammond mayoral candidate.
SWAT team members and Gang and Narcotics Unit officers served search warrants at three homes shortly after 4:30 a.m. and recovered drug paraphernalia, suspected cocaine and other controlled substances, police said.
Antonio Andrade, 40, and Spencer Carillo, 21, were arrested at the home Andrade shares with his wife and eight children in the 6700 block of Arkansas Avenue.
Carillo's father, Jesus Carillo, 41, was taken into custody near his home in the 6600 block of Alexander Avenue. A 15-year-old male was arrested at his parents' home in the 6400 block of New Jersey Avenue.
Gang Unit detectives said all are believed to be members of the Satan's Disciples street gang based in the western suburbs of Chicago, which they described as one of two such organized criminal groups currently operating in Hessville.
According to the warrants, confidential police informants and other witnesses named Andrade as a recruiter for the street gang who targeted students at Scott Middle School and Morton High School for potential gang membership.
Andrade, who moved with his family to Hammond from Cicero, Ill., 18 months ago, served as campaign manager for failed bids in this month's primary elections by his son, Alex, for mayor of Hammond, and by his wife, Maritza, for the 6th District City Council seat.
During the campaign season, Andrade, his son and wife filed more than a dozen complaints with police over alleged vandalism, intimidation and criminal recklessness they claimed were committed by street gang members attempting to force them to drop out of the elections.
In April, Andrade was charged with resisting law enforcement, obstruction of traffic and refusal to aid law enforcement after allegedly confronting police over his allegations of wrongdoing by an opponent of his wife in the election, incumbent Councilman Homero "Chico" Hinojosa, D-6th.
A teenage son of Andrade was treated at a local hospital Thursday morning after complaining of soreness to his chin from an injury he claimed occurred when police entered the Arkansas Avenue home.
Though the Satan's Disciples have a decades-long history in Illinois, detectives said the group is a relative newcomer to Northwest Indiana, with the first graffiti and other so-called "SDz" indicators appearing in Hammond about a year and a half ago.
Police said counts of criminal gang activity and other possible charges are expected to be presented to prosecutors Friday.
"Detectives worked for several months to get these charges against one of the two major criminal groups operating in Hessville," Police Chief Brian Miller said. "The other one's next." | |
