Senate panel OKs creationism teaching bill

An Indiana Senate panel has approved a bill that would allow creationism to be taught in Indiana's public schools.

The Times of Munster reported that the Republican-controlled Senate Education Committee voted 8-2 Wednesday to send the legislation to the full Senate despite pleas from scientists and religious leaders to keep religion out of science classrooms.

The bill allows schools to authorize "the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life" and specifically mentions "creation science" as one such theory. Creationism is the belief that the Earth and its creatures were created by a deity.

Purdue University professor of chemistry John Staver told the panel evolution is the only theory of life's origins that relies on scientific investigations. He says creationism "is unquestionably a statement of a specific religion."

Thank you, Republicans! Your representatives continue to be an embarrassment to rational thought, science, and common sense, at the expense of our children's education.

Absolutely no one should be proud of this.

Don't worry,Heretic. With the way the R's are cutting funding for public schools pretty soon there won't be any left to worry about.

Personhood laws criminalizing miscarriages, public hangings, outlawing unions, no gay marriage, no evolution or global warming, demonizing American Muslims, and restarting the war in Iraq and a new one in Iran. This is what they've spent their time doing (or trying to) rather than dealing with the economy and the housing crisis.

It's a laughable record and why I can't vote for any of them.

OMG! Rolling Eyes I hadn't heard that one before, but I guess with all the crazy stuff they're trying to pass, some of the nutso bills just get lost in the shuffle.

Here's an article about it Singing the anthem: Are you doing it 'right'? Lawmaker wants rules for performances at schools

I gotta wonder how much money it costs the legislative process when an idiotic bill like this is introduced and then factor in the costs of enforcing it,like drawing up a contract that the performer would have to sign.

Oh,and the hefty $25.00 fine is certain to be a deterrent. Senate panel OKs creationism teaching bill Sarcasm

It passed the Senate. And they added a little bit "requiring multiple religious viewpoints". Way to fail Constitutional Law 101, fucktards. (Can we quickly pass a law that says everyone who voted for it will have to pay the legal expenses out of pocket when this thing is finally challenged?)

So, thanks to that extra bit, our schools can now not only teach creationism to our children, but they'll also get to learn the wonders and merits of Scientology in our science classes as well. That sure is an accomplishment to be proud of.

And to give you an idea of just how retarded this whole thing is, it's even upset the Discovery Institute. Priceless.

Has Daniels indicated whether he would sign it? Never mind.
Looks like the House Speaker hasn't lost all his sanity...
Creationism bill may not get House vote

NDIANAPOLIS | A Senate-approved plan allowing public schools to teach creationism probably will not be voted on by the Republican-controlled House.
House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said he has not made a final determination on whether Senate Bill 89 will get a hearing and vote, but said he believes the General Assembly should not mandate what's taught in science classrooms.

Good news. But it wasn't completely devoid of mind numbing nonsense:

Quote :
A spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Education said the agency sets standards for student instruction but does not decide what is taught.

"We believe this is a local issue best left to school communities to decide," said Stephanie Sample. "We give local school leaders the flexibility necessary to use the content most appropriate for their students."

'Cause that's how reality works. By popular vote. Morons.
