HAMMOND | City officials are putting out the word they will have a "major industrial" announcement Tuesday, the same day on which Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. already has pledged to close a deal to bring Potash Corp. to Gibson Yard.
Neither city officials nor McDermott would specify on Friday what company is coming to the city.
"All I can say is this is a major development for Hammond and there are other businesses that will want to be close to this," McDermott said.
In the spring of this year, Potash, of Saskatoon, Canada, confirmed for The Times that Gibson Yard was one of several Midwest locations it was considering for locating a major rail transfer facility.
Hammond officials have said Potash wants to invest $100 million at the rail yard. Indiana Harbor Belt Railway already has cleared 90 acres on the south side of Gibson Yard and laid new tracks there.
Tuesday's announcement will come one week before Election Day, with McDermott facing off against Republican challenger George Janiec. On Tuesday, McDermott celebrated the opening of a Walmart store on the city's north side.

Man, Artie, you must be employed by Hammond before they changed the rules of hiring outside the state-line like my friend's husband that works in Federal Court in Hammond.

Be thankful they didn't include you in their "rules changed!" proposition, which then required brainless a-holes connected through blood or just friendship to be allowed to stay.

And dear, what does your post mean? If Mayor McDeed is re-elected but leaves...or voters decide they have nothing else to loose, because nothing could be worse, what do you think will happen?

I hope the FEDS step in..that's the only solution, no matter who feels they voted for the lesser of two evils. I hope others get involved and tell the FEDS what's really going on.

When you are in politics, you have no choice but to do the least: praise the boss and cross your fingers if someone else takes over.

I have an inkling voters in Hammond are so disgusted they'd resort to the devil if they had to. They've had their fill, I can tell.

But typically, they are afraid to speak out for fear of retaliation. I have nothing to lose.

I will continue to tell my story until something is done about it. I was used, abused, and used again. Unlike others, I have friends that allow me to walk away and still shout my voice.

It's wrong, just plain wrong what the politicians, cops, and those connected do to you. Especially when you corner them with the TRUTH.

You suddenly find out they were not the friends they pretended to be so they could advance their own selfish deeds with taxpayers' money.

My way of flipping them off is to sell the house and make sure the cops are busy answering the door.

I have friends that want that house so bad..it gets sold within a month. They won the lottery months ago, and they offered to take it of my hands and pay me what I stuck in it and out of compassion, more than it is worth today. 50,000 grand more than the 26,000 I stuck in it. Beats being a landlord or visiting to make sure it is mowed, kept up. My hope is, no innocent person like me gets atrracted to it only to find out they will get violated not only by thieves but cops.

You can gloat in Hammond. You don't know a better world until you leave. I thought a house was a goal. I didn't know it could become a curse.
