Chris Christie’s big problem

By Eugene Robinson, Published: September 29

Whether or not he lets himself be persuaded to run for president, Chris Christie needs to find some way to lose weight. Like everyone else, elected officials perform best when they are in optimal health. Christie obviously is not.
You could argue that this is none of my business, but I disagree. Christie’s problem with weight ceased being a private matter when he stepped into the public arena — and it’s not something you can fail to notice. Obesity is a national epidemic whose costs are measured not just in dollars and cents but also in lives. Christie’s weight is as legitimate an issue as the smoking habit that President Obama says he has finally kicked.

….
Politically, I disagree with Christie on almost everything. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to tell him why. Today, I’d just like to offer him a bit of unsolicited, nonpartisan, sincere advice: Eat a salad and take a walk.

What a sanctimonious prick this author is, his sanctimony equaled only by the disingenuous crocodilian tears of his phony concern for Christie’s well-being.
We currently have a White House resident who is an admitted smoker and user of illicit hard narcotics, so I fail to see obesity being a major concern for anyone choosing to support Christie. Discerning voters will judge him based on his policy, not his figure.
Of course, there will be a certain poster on this board who will inevitably accuse him of intentionally gaining weight to imply a false pregnancy, or some such nonsense, but that is a different story for a different time.

WTF? Putting aside Christie for a moment, your statement that the President "uses illicit narcotics" is absolutely not true.

I didn't say he 'uses' illicit hard narcotics - I said that he is an admitted user of illicit hard narcotics.
But you are justified in calling me out - I mistakenly said 'narcotics' when, in fact, cocaine is actually classified as a stimulant. The marijuana, obviously not a 'hard' drug by any stretch, would be considered hallucinogenic.
Thank you for allowing me to correct myself.
My bad.

Actually, I was just messing with you. Jack. But let's take a look at what you actually wrote...

happy jack wrote:

Now let's remove "admitted smoker," as well as the "and," which we should be able to do if the sentence is correct. What we're left with is...

"We currently have a White House resident who is a user of illicit hard narcotics..."

That's what I was pointing out... "is" is present tense.

Yeah, I know it's trivial grammatical bullshit, and that it was obvious what you actually meant. Like I said, I was just kidding around.

Yeah, the tense could have been misconstrued. I had no intention of suggesting that he currently uses drugs.

I don't think President Obama smokes cigs inside the White House, so he's ok. He ain't hurtin' nobody, especially when the weather gets bad. I heard he goes downstairs in the bomb shelter for that. I reckon' there's a whole lot of places you can smoke away in that there "People's House".

He did say he used ta be usin' or tryin' out what, crack-wheat during his puppy days. That's been so long ago, Lord, I 'shore don't know what the fuss was 'bout, cuz that's gotta be out of his whole body blood by now. If not, well, there's plenty of places he can go in the "People's House" for that. Heard they got a lot of connections in there. Ain't no worry 'bout him, you fools.

I don't think Bushy, Jr. drank a drop of alcohol during his Presidency. He 'shore did before. I think he had enough left over it was still enuf in his blood to keep him a runnin'. Yesiree, in fact, I heard he ran for eight looong years... must've stocked himself up silly to keep on goin' that long.

I don't think Clinton went so far as ta really needin' a rubberized raincoat while he was out fishin' for a lame ducklin'; he never "inhaled", either, so that doesn't count. So he didn't run up no peoples'' bill, chargin' for those rubber rain-coats he didn't need and didn't make no baby ducklins that would've cost people a whole lot more. Now how many politicians can you brag about not chargin' people for somethin' they didn't need?

I don't think George Senior did anything but drink kool-aid when no one was looking. Besides, looked like his wife would've slapped him silly if she caught him drinking anything else.

As far as Vice-Presidents, I heard one shot his friend accidently and kinda hurt him; but hey, what are friends for when they aim "high"?

I don't understand why that guy, Christie's weight bothers anyone. Just make sure if you root for him, you root in a VP that is in great shape. You can usually tell if their insides are ok, by looking on the outside. Same for the brains. After all, we don't want no skinny guy filled with cholesterol with genes that don't make him look fat, keelin' over too soon.

Only thing I'd be concerned about is he gonna be eatin' a whole lot more than President Obama, his wife, kids, and his maw-in-law, combined. That there food bill tab is gonna cost a whole lot more. pig

So why you'all makin' a fuss over this Mr. Christie Creme? We'll have more folks dropping in, dropping by and dropping off the homefront over the next few months.

No use frettin' at this point.

Yeah, that was when he drank on a hunting trip and shot his friend in the face. Tragic events are prone to happen on hunting trips where one is mixing alcohol and heart medication.

The GOP outrage is laughable. These are the same people that looked the other way when Laura Ingraham made fun of Megan McCain's weigh. Chelsea Clinton was attacked by Limbaugh for her looks as was Hillary Clinton and on and on

The fact of the matter is that Christie is obese, possibly morbidly, and probably weighs over 300 lbs. That's a legitimate heath issue that should be considered.

Yeah. Well if you're interested, Frank Bruni, an op-ed writer for the New York Times agrees with you, Jack...

The Round and the Oval

Here's an excerpt.

Quote :
There are a great many things that Chris Christie is indeed too fat for.

A middle seat in coach. That would be cruel to the people on the window and aisle, and some carriers might forbid it, as the movie director Kevin Smith, ejected not long ago from a Southwest Airlines flight, can roundly attest.

But the presidency? That’s ludicrous. Downgrade Christie for his truculent style. Reject him for his limited experience. But don’t dwell on his heft, at least not to the extent that many Americans have been whispering — and some are now outright saying — you should. Girth doesn’t equal character. And mettle has better measurements than the number of scoops in your post-dinner sundae or miles in your pre-breakfast run.

No one suggested that those traits should disqualify either of the Obamas from office, unlike the case being made over Christie's obesity.
People made fun of Urkel's ears and Aunt Esther's arms because .... well, it's sort of self-explanatory.

But Tapper offered a different perspective, and looked at the physical challenges Christie might have running a campaign in his current state of health.
“It is an incredibly grueling thing to run for president. It is incredibly physically demanding on a candidate. And I think there is a question about somebody who is that unhealthy whether he or she could keep up with 18-hour days for the next nine years.”

Requiem for a Governor Before He’s in the Ring

By Michael Kinsley Sep 29, 2011
7:00 PM CT Fri Sep 30 00:00:50 GMT 2011

Look, I’m sorry, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cannot be president: He is just too fat. Maybe, if he runs for president and we get to know him, we will overlook this awkward issue because we are so impressed with the way he stands up to teachers’ unions. But we shouldn’t overlook it -- unless he goes on a diet and shows he can stick to it.

You cite a blogger's opinion as proof of Cheney's alcoholism?
With research skills like that, it's no wonder everyone uses you to wipe the floor in every debate you enter.

FYI,Cheney had 2 DUI's,not one, that fact alone is a huge red flag for alcoholism. Add in the fact that he became a teetotaler, which is what recovering alcoholics practice and the author is spot on. 1 DUI may be a mistake....2 points to a problem.

Now,Speaking of "research skills"....you wrote:
