| I've never been of the opinion that Philpot did this deliberately or intended to defraud anyone.. Philpot to fight public corruption charges in court - Quote :
- Lake County Coroner Thomas Philpot's public corruption case will go to trial because he did not intentionally take money that was not his, his attorney said Monday.
Philpot, 54, was named in a five-count indictment last week alleging he committed mail fraud as part of a scheme to steal more than $24,000 from a federally funded child support program between December 2004 and October 2009 while serving as county clerk. The money came from incentive payments public officials like Philpot could not receive without the Lake County Council's permission. According to the indictment, the council never gave Philpot the requisite approval. Leonard Goodman, Philpot's attorney, said Philpot's decision to partake in the same federal incentive payments program as his employees came after he was told it was OK to do so – from an attorney paid for by the County Council. In 2008, the council hired David Saks to provide the clerk with legal advice. And the written advice Saks gave in this instance was that Philpot could give himself the incentive money, Goodman said.

| honestly the case appears to be horseshit. now i know the feds arent typically prone to such weak cases. but based on the coverage and the rumor mill both. its hard to see what the hell they are claiming. the original council attorney gave bad advice to philpot, and therefore philpot should be thrown in jail? no way. if thats the case a jury...would spend about 5 minutes before coming back not guilty
hell even it if were a juror full of times editorialist (odonnell of course would be excluded for bias) i think the best the feds could hope for is a hung jury. (kiesling of course)
if these charges were brought against anyone other then philpot...the outcry would be huge over the persecution (not sic i meant persecution)

| Ya know how I hate going back and copying stuff, but a...somewhere - it stated that it was going on for many years what Philpot was doing, and he didn't seek an attorney's advice until way after the fact. Think they said it started in 2004 or 2006?
Can't keep track of who is getting slammed left and right for dipping in funds that don't belong to them. Merriville just caught some old bitty stealing money, too.
Seems like the Feds are poppin' up all over lately.

if these charges were brought against anyone other then philpot...the outcry would be huge over the persecution (not sic i meant persecution) Sorry, Oracle. Ain't no horseshit without SALT when it comes to the FEDS! You don't even have to rat on anyone. For instance, last Sunday in the Chicago Tribune, it was found that 27% of the gas stations owned by dealers were misleading the state of IL on the amount of gas they were selling. Well, thinking no one was looking, they would submit records to the state showing only "X" amount of taxes due based on the quantity of gas purchased by John Q. Public. Well, what these mostly foreign-owned gas station owners were too stupid to think of was, the gasoline distributors were submitting by law, the actual amount of gas being bought by the dealers,...which raised a red-flag to some knowledgeable, smart-whip person downstate in Springfield, that blew the whistle. Always wondered why most of the gas stations are being run by foreigners, with or without turbans. Millions and millions of tax money owed by those gas station owners for so many years, was kept by them from the state of IL. For YEARS. Anyways, they are all in deep-doo. One fled the country. The investigation isn't even over yet. I bet you a horse's butt this crap is going on in every state, especially in Indiana. Indiana was always known for cheaper gas. I would bet you anything if they investigated this scenario in IN, they'd come up with a host of tax scammin' gas stations. Gas is no cheaper in Indiana, than in Will County in IL. Gas IS cheaper in Michigan, though. Something tells me something isn't right in Indiana. Just hoping IN downstate or the county gets smart enough to check the records. Back to: Point is, I think Philpot is in some deeeeep crap. When it comes to the FEDS, they are undercover everywhere. They always were. I think because of less tax money trickling in, their job(s) are more important to them than ever. They're going to go all out to save their own butts. So I think they are turning up the heat in all states.

| Reading between the lines on the Philpot story, I am presuming he is in deep doo.
On the Bernard Carter issue, this is what I feel reading between the lines where he said he promptly asked an outside prosecuter to handle his niece's case:
Fibber. Too little, tooooo late. It went on for way to long. So, I smell something funny there.
Just me, though and my intuition.
I hope I am wrong. It makes me mad when I read about all the stuff these public officials do that are not ethical in the first place, like, why would his niece be working there in the first place, even if it's by "marriage" (married to his nephew, therefore related as "niece")?
Maybe that's not important, but if you don't want YOUR reputation tarnished by the acts of a family member, then don't get them the job.
What else would people be expected to believe, even if it does turn out Carter had nothing to do with it?
I give the benefit of the doubt, but I have the feeling of doubt that he is innocent. Does that make sense? Oh, I never did make sense.
