CALUMET CITY — Police shut down River Oaks Center and the River Oaks West Shopping Center in Calumet City, the Landings Shopping Center in Lansing, and the Walmart and adjoining Lansing Square strip mill in Lansing after many businesses in Cal City and Lansing were looted or had their windows smashed in Sunday.
The scene was chaotic along the Torrence Avenue commercial district Sunday after with multiple storefronts broken in and swarms of police blocking off entrances to various shopping centers. Some officers were in riot gear and a few wielded shotguns, batons and riot shields. Police were observed firing pepper spray balls at people running through the River Oaks mall.

A SWAT team with armored vehicles guarded the entrances to Party City and Petco. A police helicopter circled overhead. Protesters of the police killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other African-American citizens hung out of the windows of speeding vehicles or stood in the sunroofs with signs demanding justice, holding cell phones shooting livestreams, and extending middle fingers. A ski-masked man fired off dozens of fireworks out of the passenger seat of a car while driving on River Oaks Drive.

Susan Rice makes claim Russians could be behind violent George Floyd demonstrations

Former Obama administration national security adviser Susan Rice bizarrely suggested in a televised interview Sunday that the Russians could be behind the violent nationwide demonstrations following the in-custody death of George Floyd, although she offered no evidence for the incendiary claim.
Rice's made the claim after top Democrats insisted for years that the White House had conspired with Russia, although Special Counsel Robert Mueller found no evidence to support any conspiracy with Russia by any U.S. actor to influence the 2016 election. Her remarks also came amid efforts by Democrats to pin the blame on outside white supremacist agitators, even though data suggests the vast majority of arrested protesters in recent days are local.
"To designate Antifa a terrorist organization, fine, but let's also focus on the right-wing terrorist organizations," Rice told CNN's Wolf Blitzer, referring to President Trump's decision earlier in the day to brand the left-wing militant group as a terrorist organization. "The white supremacists that he's called, in the past, very fine people."
Rice's claim that Trump praised white supremacists has been debunked. Like Rice, Trump specifically made a distinction between peaceful political protesters and white supremacists, whom Trump said he condemned "totally." ("Very fine people" were protesting the censorship and removal of a Civil War statue, Trump said.)
Rice continued: "We have peaceful protesters focused on the very real pain and disparities that we're all wrestling with that have to be addressed, and then we have extremists who've come to try to hijack those protests and turn them into something very different. And they're probably also, I would bet based on my experience, I'm not reading the intelligence these days, but based on my experience this is right out of the Russian playbook as well."
"I would not be surprised to learn that they have fomented some of these extremists on both sides using social media," Rice said. "I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they are funding it in some way, shape, or form."

'They're terrified.' Mom of woman attacked in viral video during Rochester unrest speaks out

Video of a violent confrontation between a group of looters and a city couple went viral Sunday, a graphic glimpse at the chaos that gripped Rochester in the hours after a long and peaceful Black Lives Matter protest ended Saturday afternoon.
The video shows a group of eight men, armed with metal clubs and wooden 2x4s breaking the window of a jewelry store on Marshall Street near Monroe Avenue. A young woman comes out of the door of the 2nd floor apartment located above over the store. Her husband stands beside her.
"Go away" she can be heard saying to the men, "People live here!"
In response, one of the looters begins swinging the length of 2x4, striking both residents. Others in the group join in the attack, throwing objects at the couple. Another punches the woman repeatedly in the head and holds her while others rain blows across her head and back.

As she's knocked to the ground, her husband returns with a golf club, yelling "you get away from my wife" as he chases the looters away.  
The video, just 68 seconds long and captured by a passing motorist, is an ugly example of the wanton violence that spread across the city and Monroe County suburbs.
"I was horrified when I saw the video," said Shelly Gonzales, who identified the couple as her 24-year-old daughter Madison Mavity and son-in-law Bret Mavity.

She said Madison had lived in the apartment above the cluster of stores for more than four years. She helped the owners of the jewelry store board up their windows after it had been ransacked earlier Saturday afternoon.
"She told me that's why she went outside," Gonzales said. "Maddy heard the banging and thought the owners had returned, so she went down to help."
Instead, she found herself face to face with a dangerous crowd.
"She was pissed," Gonzales said. "She was really angry and frustrated."


Gonzales says she believes Madison suffered a concussion and Brett suffered a broken hand in the melee. The couple were seeking medical care on Sunday.
While she's glad her daughter is safe, Gonzales said she's frustrated that police did not respond to her daughter's 911 calls after the incident, especially when other groups of looters attacked the location again.
The couple decided to flee the location after seeing looters with gas cans outside the building around 2:45 a..m. Sunday, Gonzales said.

"They're terrified because they don't feel safe going back to their home," Gonzales said.
The couple is staying with friends.

Gonzales said she is relieved that her daughter and son-in-law were not more seriously injured, but that she is proud of the way her daughter reacted once she found herself in that extremely volatile and dangerous situation.
"I'm so proud that she came out and on seeing what she saw, she could have run back upstairs. Instead, she stood her ground," Gonzales said. "I think my daughter is a hero."

Rioters Decline To Sign Colin Kaepernick

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Colin Kaepernick arrived at the Minneapolis riots last night, saying he was excited to be a part of the looting and violence.
Kaepernick tried out for the riots by throwing bricks into windows but missed every time. He was able to rush a Molotov cocktail into a target window and then spike it on the ground, but then he caught fire. Finally, in a last-ditch effort to get selected for one of the riot squads, he filmed a workout video and sent it to various protester organizations but hadn't heard back as of publishing time.
"While we appreciate Kaepernick's enthusiasm, we need someone who can lob a Molotov cocktail accurately," said a representative for the rioters. "We wish him the best of luck in his future rioting career. We believe Kaepernick will land on his feet with another rioting organization. Maybe Chicago or Louisville will want him."
The former quarterback quickly blamed his failed rioting career on racism.
