Cubs want weekend festivals around Wrigley during Yankees, Cardinals, White Sox series
Quote :
The Chicago Cubs want to stage weekend festivals on Sheffield Avenue during three popular series this summer, a team official said today.
The idea is to close Sheffield from Addison Street to Waveland Avenue on the east side of Wrigley Field for most of the day from Friday through Sunday on three weekends in June, July and August when the Cubs face the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, said Wally Hayward, chief of sales and marketing for the club.

Tickets would not be needed to get into the area, where family entertainment, food and drink would be offered,
Are they out of their freakin mind? A free warm weather festival populated by fans of opposing teams that hate each other (Sox & Cards) and lots and lots of booze. What could possibly go wrong? Rolling Eyes

Isn't it already almost impossible to park close to a game?

I look at it as having fun and freedom. What's wrong with having fun?

Does everything have to be gloomy in the USA?

We need time to have fun, despite the problems facing us. Besides, it iis only Chicagoans doing the celebrating.

With parking meters, etc, let the neighborhood do what they want.

Who outside of big shots or surrounding residents would celebrate?

What major lathes get paid for having no brains, can fluk of. Ever listen to thir interviews after games? Sounds like they never passed second grade. They don't know how to communicate.

They are not worth a dollar a season to watch...non of them nationally.p

Yeah but that's really not an issue since there's a wealth of public transportation, buses, elevated trains, and huge parking lots west of the park that provide shuttle service.

Nothing, but when you have a significant amount of people who hate the opposing team liquored up on a hot day in a somewhat small area that's a recipe for disaster,IMO. A close game ending on controversial call in the 9th inning, fans start to taunt each other....and :dyno:

How many jobs will be created by eliminating these festivals?
None.
You do realize that money will be spent at the local bars and eateries, don't you?
How many businesses would be hurt by eliminating these festivals?
Would you be in favor of these festivals if they were funded by the Federal Freakin' Government, like your Cowboy Poetry Festival?

That's because the festivals didn't exist in the first place, genius. Never mind the extra Police presence required which would cost the city extra and the fact that the Alderman and I'm sure the neighbors are against it.

Chuck,I miss the good old days when Lee Elia was managing. You could buy tickets for half price and season ticketholders would be grateful to get rid of them. I was proud to one of those 3000 that Elia referred to that showed up everyday Laughing

So you're claiming that you used to be a Cubs fan? I find that difficult to believe, Artie.

No,not at all. I'm one of those people who root for the Sox,but am always happier with a Cubs loss than a Sox win. That was the beauty of it.

Ah. I see... It's refreshing to see a Sox "fan" finally cop to this. As a Cubs (and baseball) fan, I can't even imagine caring more about another team's losses than my own team's wins.

I don't think that it's very admirable, but at least your response is honest.

Yeah. Well I can understand that. But I seriously doubt that your Dad wanted the Bulls to lose more than he wanted the Celtics to win.

I'm not alone,Scorp. Let me a share a true story with you. Very Happy Some years ago I was waiting in a hotel lobby about to start listening to a Sox playoff game with a Walkman type device. A stranger walked up to me and asked what the score was but since I just tuned in I didn't know. We started talking and he asked me if I was a Sox fan. I replied "I'm more of a Cub hater". The other guy doesn't say a word, but breaks into a huge smile and reaches out to shake my hand and we both burst out laughing. I still laugh about that encounter every time I think of it.

I used to have a T-shirt that I picked up in St Louis outside Busch Stadium that had the Cardinal logo and said "I root for the St Louis Cardinals and whoever plays the Chicago Cubs" Very Happy

Yup.
That's a knee-slapper.
Got any more stories like that?
(Incidentally, how did this mysterious stranger know that you were listening to a Sox game, and not merely listening to music? After all, a 'Walkman type device' employs headphones, and the mysterious stranger couldn't have possibly been able to hear what you were listening to, could he?
Was the dead giveaway that you were sitting there eating a hot dog and waving a Sox pennant?
Or were you attempting to do a one-man 'wave'?
Or did you simply pull this 'true' story out of your dark place?)

Nope,it was just that one, although I could also mention the time that I told my 12 year old nephew and die-hard Cubs fan that I had a big surprise for him. We ended up at City Hall in Calumet City where the 2005 White Sox World Series trophy was being displayed and we had our picture taken in front of it Very Happy

No,I guess he assumed that the game was what I was listening to.. It was the playoffs after all. Any more nitpicking,or are you through now?

But he is not a Sox fan...he is a Cubs hater. Big difference.
I am a Sox (and baseball) fan...I follow the Sox and couldn't care less about the Cubs.
If the Cubs are ever able to make it to the post season, I would be happy for them.
