West: Obama 'a black mascot' and 'black puppet'

Cornel West, a Princeton University professor and leading black intellectual, is harshly criticizing President Obama, a candidate he once supported but now calls “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats.”
West, a former Harvard University professor, said during an interview with the website Truthdig posted yesterday that the president has not been true to his race.
“I think my dear brother Barack Obama has a certain fear of free black men,” West said. “It’s understandable. As a young brother who grows up in a white context, brilliant African father, he’s always had to fear being a white man with black skin. All he has known culturally is white…When he meets an independent black brother, it is frightening.”
The White House did not have an immediate comment. West did not respond to messages left at his office.
Republicans have questioned Obama’s origins — to the point where he felt compelled to release his long-form birth certificate to prove he was born in Hawaii — but West also uses Obama’s past to draw into question the president’s racial bearings.
“Obama, coming out of Kansas influence, white, loving grandparents, coming out of Hawaii and Indonesia, when he meets these independent black folk who have a history of slavery, Jim Crow, Jane Crow and so on, he is very apprehensive,” West said. “He has a certain rootlessness, a deracination. It is understandable.”
West is a professor at Princeton's Center for African American Studies and is the author of "Race Matters." He was a professor at Harvard, but left in 2002 amid quarrels with then-president Lawrence Summers.
West also recounts personal slights — that his phone calls didn’t get returned, and that he couldn’t get a ticket with his mother and brother to the inauguration.
It is not the first time West has raised questions about Obama. Last year, during an interview with NPR, he said he wished the president were more “Martin Luther King-like.”

He's hedging his bets. Can't be proven wrong if he never offers an opinion on anything. It's the only safe course of action nowadays for conservatives.

We were all simply expecting something slightly more substantial than a random quote from a guy on the intarweb; you know... some actual "fresh thoughts on the President" instead of the same trite and old Obama bashing. You didn't explain how or why this is different from any other, if it was an accurate analysis, or if you even agreed. And now you seem even reluctant (or unable) to do so.

It is a news item, and it was posted as a possible topic of discussion – which, it is fair to say, it has become.
After all, that is kind of the point of a forum, isn’t it?

No, not really. IMHO, I don't see the point of posting something on a discussion board unless you have an actual opinion on the topic to be discussed. We're all perfectly capable of reading the news. And I think it's "fair to say" that the "topic of discussion" has been more about why you posted the quote.

So why do you think that West's quote is relevant? It's a simple question. I really don't understand why you're refusing to answer it.

My personal opinion is he doen't know what the hell he's doing. Doesn't follow the U.S. Constitution.

Again, the problem was your topic. We were all expecting "fresh thoughts" and instead we get the more of the same. It was provided with no comment and therefore not way to distinguish it from any of the other noise from Fox News or this forum itself.

So some internet blowhard thinks Obama's a douche. Wow. Boring. So do I. But at least be honest, if any of us started posting random quotes of how big a tool Bush was, your response wouldn't be any different than ours.

I do. Obama didn't follow the U.S. Constitution in warfare.

I don't think he did any favors suggesting what he suggested to the Prime Minister of Israel. Even his own Demo's disagreed with him.

To start warfare and continue past the 60 days without Congressional input, and approval is breaking the U.S. Constitution.

Period.

And, I don't think he did any good. He just left the country high and dry divided.

Who are we to tell other countries to make peace, yet arm them, send them money.

He hasn't a clue how to be a POTUS and wouldn't be nearly eligible if not for advisors. Therefore, he is disqualified.

Name something he's done for our country. Name a couple hundred things he did for other countries while we drown. Sending 1.6 billion a week to Iraq, the Arabs, whatever, I can't keep track anymore on the statistics.

What never ceases to amaze me, we have crumbling bridges, broken school systems, foreclosures up the azz, people starving, wanting to work...and the numbskull is focused on peace in other foreign countries while taxing U.S. dollars to support THEM.

We are not the world's keeper anymore. He needs to focus on US. This latest tactic by Biden's wife and FLOTUS focusing on the troops' families...do the right thing and bring them home.

All they do is showboat.
