- Todd Stroger seeking unemployment benefits
Former Cook County Board President Todd Stroger, who left office late last year, wants to start collecting unemployment checks.
But the county is fighting Stroger's request on the grounds he isn’t eligible to get unemployment for wages he made as an elected official.
Stroger applied Jan. 7 to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, seeking unemployment benefits for the $170,000 he got annually as county board president, according to Jessey Neves, spokeswoman for current Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
The county protested Stroger's claim within the 10-day response period, Neves said today. "It's not a personal decision. He is ineligible under the law," she said.
Greg Rivara, spokesman for the state employment agency, said he could not comment on a specific request for unemployment benefits. But Rivara said the money elected officials earn in their official duties is not included when calculating possible unemployment benefits.

He never even ran for reelection since he finished dead last in the primary. He's an idiot that gives all politicians a bad name. The woman who replaced him,Toni Preckwinkle has done a remarkable job so far. She's repealed the sales tax increase, passed a budget that cut spending by negotiating with county workers and unions and fired many of Stroger's appointees.

The tax repeal will not go into effect for two years!

The tax repeal will not go into effect for two years! Wrong. Half of it,One quarter of a percent gets rolled back January 2012,and the remaining one quarter January 2013. Considering that Ms Preckwinkle's term runs through 2014 and her #1 promise was to repeal it,I fully expect it to be implemented and don't see that tax hike coming back.

In fact 1/4 of 1% gets rolled back in 10 months and the other 1/4 a year after that.

In fact 1/4 of 1% gets rolled back in 10 months and the other 1/4 a year after that. Ok, the TOTAL tax repeal will not be realized for two years. Jesus H. Christ.
