incredible. i couldnt make this up. one issue. a statistical poll. two very different takes.

the nwitimes looks at it this way

Residents pan region in Soul of the Community poll

http://nwitimes.com/news/local/lake/article_a374e8f4-b71a-51d2-875a-345ab976c818.html

Northwest Indiana residents sharply criticized the region's quality of life and registered fleeting attachment to their community in a Gallup survey released Tuesday

We lack an identity here in Northwest Indiana as opposed to parts of Chicago area," Murchek said.

He said attacks on regionalism are more about people not having confidence in the ability of leadership to make things happen as opposed to people in the region being racist or afraid of Lake County politicians and taxation.

"It's hard to explain why things have taken a turn in the last 18 to 24 months, but there seems to be that sense that regionalism has run its course," Lowery said.

same poll same numbers. quite a different take in the pt

Poll finds newcomers like it best in NW Indiana

http://www.post-trib.com/news/1797599,knight.article

Northwest Indiana's newest residents are among its happiest, says a poll of region dwellers released Tuesday.

"What that means is there are people who have moved there recently and are glad to be there," Loflin said. "Community leaders have a chance to reach out to these newer residents."

The survey did find residents had a strong bond to the parks, playgrounds and trails in the community and the "beauty or physical setting" of the region.

"That's something to build on, to provide people with those amenities that they enjoy," Loflin said.

the post story certainly isnt all cookies and cream. it does have the same negative numbers within it. but they are stated matter of factly with little comment upon them

Community leaders received some of the lowest marks from residents. Eight out of 10 people in the survey gave "low" scores to the statements "Community leaders represent my interests" and 76 percent gave low responses on the leadership of elected officials.

is it any wonder why some people are skeptical of the media these days? they claim to be nuetral and fair in there stories. but then how can one explain these vastly different interpretations, on a staticstics story?

ok yesterday i noted how the two papers had different coverages about a story involving a friend of mine. certainly both are in bed with the sherrif. but still one...the post was reasonably fair in its coverage while the times was imo completly bush league in its coverage. but here is a story that is simply based on statistics, that results in wildly different view points shining through. why? well the oracle of the region is here to explain it for those of you that dont have time to ponder these things.

my take. one paper supports actual region growth for all of us and supporting its friends in political power. another supports its vision for an rda, and its friends in power.

niether paper much gives a damn what you really think. they are only worried about supporting their current benefactors and growing their numbers of their benefactor base in the future. the slight difference, which led to the wildly different spins in these stories today is one of those papers actually shares the want of real regional growth with most of its readership. while the other simply wants the rda'a railway to be implemented for its own purposes.

in other words look for the times to have some sort of feature on what the local rda expansion would mean for the region...and cite this recent poll as showing the need for it in the near future.

the oracle is back folks. and this time he is taking names lol.
