McCown says Texas should not serve as a job-growth paradigm for the rest of the nation.

"If you're saying you want to look like Texas, you're saying you want to be poor and have less health care," he says.

Rick Perry's so-called "economic miracle" is a mirage owed to federal stimulus funds

Most people know of Texas' reputation for creating jobs — the cornerstone of Perry's pitch that limited government, less regulation and low taxes are the tonic for what ails the nation. Yet almost half of the state's job growth the past two years was led by education, health care and government, the sectors of the economy that will now take a hit as federal stimulus money runs out and the Legislature's 8 percent cut in state spending translates into thousands of layoffs among state workers and teachers in the coming weeks.

The Texas Unmiracle

Meanwhile, Massachusetts has near-universal coverage thanks to health reform very similar to the “job-killing” Affordable Care Act.

So where does the notion of a Texas miracle come from? Mainly from widespread misunderstanding of the economic effects of population growth.

Perry brushes off Bush comparisons

I've never been there, but a friend/audiologist of mine relocated from Homewood, IL traveled the continent, (even Africa) with his wife.

Left the business he owned in Homewood, moved to TEXAS in 2001. Said it was the best place and move he ever made in his life. Owns a sucessful construction company.

My sis-in-law's sister and husband relocated from moving quite a bit over the years. Her husband travels to China, Italy, etc., sells steel. They relocated from Ft. Wayne, IN to Texas, and they love it. She works at a vet (doesn't have to work, but does), and just to give you an idea...when you take your pet to a vet, you usually envision a little brick building. Well, this just isn't a vet in a little bitty building...it's like a couple stories high, and has wards like a hospital. Now my bro and sis-in-law had plans to sell and move there to join them (me too!) but with the housing slump, forget it.

Their grown kids liked it so much in Texas, they moved down there to be with their parents and found really great jobs. In Indiana, forget it, especially Ft. Wayne.

Other than that, someone I talk politics with mentioned Texas.

Perry dismissed his Communications Director’s comments, declaring “I haven’t backed off anything in my book. Read the book again, get it right.”

Texas cut fire department funding by 75 percent this year

Under Gov. Rick Perry (R) this year, Texas slashed state funding for the volunteer fire departments that protect most of the state from wildfires like the ones that have recently destroyed more than 700 homes.

Volunteer departments that were already facing financial strain were slated to have their funding cut from $30 million to $7 million, according to KVUE.

The majority of Texas is protected by volunteer fire departments. There are 879 volunteer fire departments in Texas and only 114 paid fire departments. Another 187 departments are a combination of volunteer and paid.

For that reason, aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could be more important than ever to the state where wildfires have recently been raging.

At a press conference Monday, Perry promised to seek federal disaster relief and said that FEMA would be in the state by Wednesday.

While the Texas governor has been highly critical of FEMA in the past, he told CBS’ Erica Hill Tuesday that now was not the time to worry about reforming the agency.

Even Mitch Daniels lied to the press boasting how the state is not in the hole.
