Last night there was a special congressional election in upstate NY to replace Kirsten Gillibrand who filled Hillary Clinton's Senate seat. The Democrat Scott Murphy beat Republican Jim Tedisco by 59 votes, but absentee ballots have yet to be counted.
A few thoughts as to why this is a win for Democrats even if Tedisco eventually ends up winning as a result of those absentees.....
1)This is a Republican district 2)The GOP had a 70,000 more voters registered then the Democrats. 3)Several monthes ago Tedisco was leading in the polls by 12 percentage points.
My conclusion? Nothing has changed since the Nov 2008 election. "Heckuva Job" New RNC chairman Michael Steele!

Maybe Tedisco can hire Norm Coleman's legal eagles to help obstruct this election result too. After all, they're going to be out of work very shortly...
Murphy Now Leads By 167 Votes In NY-20 By Eric Kleefeld - April 16, 2009, 11:09AM
The latest state score in NY-20 shows Democratic candidate Scott Murphy ahead of Republican Jim Tedisco by 167 votes, a margin of 50.05%-49.95%, up from an 86-vote lead at the close of business yesterday -- making it appear more likely than not that Murphy will be the winner when all is said and done. http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/04/murphy-now-leads-by-167-votes-in-ny-20.php?ref=fpjr2

ROTFLMAO!
Tedisco asks to be declared winner
Murphy still holds lead By Jamie Larson
COLUMBIA COUNTY — 20th Congressional District candidate Republican Jim Tedisco submitted a petition to the Dutchess County Supreme Court Thursday asking the judge to declare him the winner of the extremely close special election race, despite the numbers currently being in favor of his opponent, Democrat Scott Murphy.
According to The Associated Press, Murphy leads Tedisco by 178 votes district wide — 79,452 to 79,274. The only ballots that have not been counted are those challenged by each candidate’s lawyers, and while Tedisco’s office has said the challenges are roughly evenly split between the two camps, Columbia County lawyers for Murphy have only challenged 22 ballots, while Tedisco’s have challenged 258. http://www.registerstar.com/articles/2009/04/17/news/news02.txt

NY-20: "We Lost." by Arjun Jaikumar Tue Apr 21, 2009 at 05:50:04 PM PDT
Former Rep. Thomas M. Davis of Virginia is one of the smartest Republican strategists in the state - in the entire country, really. The onetime architect of Republican Congressional gains as head of the NRCC has earned almost universal acclaim from Democrats and Republicans alike for his coldly rational, reality-based political wisdom, both during bountiful times for the GOP and when the party was at its lowest ebb.
So when he speaks, people listen. And Tom Davis has spoken:
Quote :
"We lost the special election in New York. It's gone," said former Virginia Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, a veteran election vote-counter and former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Scott Murphy won this election, and is going to Congress.
So I don't think that the "battle cry" that you imagine applies. I really don't see how the GOP losing a race in upstate New York will affect the rest of the country at all. It's like saying that Chicago = Peoria. In fact, even if this race was in the City, I wouldn't expect a GOP loss would be a "battle cry for the rest of the country. You sure do have an active imagination.

Money coming into the state is money coming into the state.
Obviously Chicago doesn't equal Peoria. Chicago is a backwards hick town, politically speaking. Them "good old boys" are still making them backroom deals to spend and tax at will.
The battle cry is against the cost of progressive socialism. IOW quit spending money we don't have.

If anything what seems good to NY voters is a battle cry for the rest of the country.
You do realize that NY-20 is a Republican district and had 70,000 more Republicans registered to vote. This is a significant loss for the GOP. Has Michael Steele announced yet that he wants to spend more time with his family?

You know what, ARTIE, there are NO "democrats or republicans" any longer. You're decieving yourself if you believe either party "hosts" values of their own. There are only independents. Nothing more; nothing less.

I was taught to pull the lever on "Democrats". Straight Democrats for years.
Our family takes politics very seriously. Some CFO from Fannie May hung himself today. Normally, my brother who takes politics seriously, upon hearing the news this a.m., after telling him, only replied, "I hope they all hang themselves."
Flabergasted, he went on to say he used to believe in Republicans, Democrats before, and "they can all hang themselves". "There's no more hope because the USA sold itself out. I believe it. I feel it's no longer my country I grew up in. It seems to belong more to the Hispanics, the whomever, and we've lost our morals, our integrity.
They took America's (our) kindness for a weakness. It will never be the same, even with the belief of, "The Audicity of Hope". I would love to believe otherwise, but I seem to think in terms of reality, instead of painting a picture, and making us think of hope. I hope we get to live that "hope". So far fetched.....

Even better news is that in the first quarter,Democratic Senatorial candidates raised over twice as much money as their GOP counterparts....
