PostSubject: Farmers Markets   3/26/2009, 10:45 am

Miller Beach Farmers Market Opens Earth Day, April 19: The Miller farmer’s market didn’t get off the ground until late in the season in 2008, but that has only added to the anticipation this year. The last couple of years late April has produced some outstanding weather, so the produce market, which is a ministry of Marquette Park United Methodist Church, will kick off its second year on Sunday, April 19, 2009, in honor of Earth Day. The farmer’s market is on the sloping knoll adjacent to the church at 215 North Grand Boulevard in Miller Beach, across from Wirt High School in Gary and will be open from 11:30 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. the second and last Sundays of the month through October.

Last year’s market hosted over a dozen local farmers and vendors, including produce from organic farmer Andy Vasquez of Kouts, preserves and pickled vegetables from Nana’s Tidbits of Gary, artisan breads and pastries from Tiffany’s Tea Room in Crown Point, honey, bee pollen and beeswax from R&M Sunrise Apiary in Portage, fresh roasted coffees from Espress Yourself of Valparaiso, and a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables from Fruteria Tarimoro and Tarimoro GTO #2 in Lake Station. “This year we hope to add farm fresh eggs and cheeses, nuts, seedlings, herbs, perennials and native plants to our line-up, and we are reaching out to more local, organic and small-scale family farms and dairy, meat and poultry producers,” says Market Manager Sandra Rodriquez. The Market still has space available and is looking for farmers and food. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Sandra Rodriguez at socheckchick@yahoo.com or call 219.938.7720. Scheduled market days are April 19, May 10, May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, August 9, August 30, September 13, September 27, October 11, and October 25.
