Local post office branches are participating in Passport Day in the USA on Saturday.

It's being held in conjunction with the Department of State.

On June 1, U.S. citizens must start presenting a passport book, passport card or other U.S. government-approved travel documents to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry.

The Highland post office will do passports from 3 to 5 p.m.; the Munster branch from 3 to 5 p.m.; the Hobart branch from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and Schererville from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meanwhile illegals will continue to cross the border with no documents needed. I guess it pays to be illegal sometimes and avoid the long lines.

Seriously I think this is stupid! A driver's license is all that should be required. And especially after they forced that RFID law upon us.

Isn't it pretty easy to get a driver's license? On our recent cruise, we were only asked once for our passports, but I understand that will change soon.

Exactly. With the forced RFID laws that is changing and it's getting harder for legal Americans to even get a DL renewal in the future, and in some states already. And the RFID chip in the passport is really the main reason for the passport requirement.
