Kennedy Ave closure Empty

Kennedy Avenue was closed this morning just north of 165th. It looked like there was police activity centered around an apartment building on the east side of the street. Anyone know what was going on? I saw a Channel 5 news truck and the mayor at the site.

Man dies after driving into two buildings in Hammond
Quote :
HAMMOND | A man was killed after smashing his car into two buildings early Sunday morning.

Kenneth V. Russo, 39, of Hammond, sustained multiple blunt force injuries, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Russo died after his Mitsubishi Galant crashed into an apartment building and the Laborers International Union building in the 6400 block of Kennedy Avenue.

Police were called to the accident about 6:45 a.m., Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

It didn't appear Russo was wearing a seat belt. He was thrown from the driver's seat to the passenger's seat, Hoyda said.

"Witnesses said they saw two cars driving at a high rate of speed," he said.

The other car is believed to have been driven by Russo's roommate, who had come out to help Russo after his car ran out of gas before the accident, Hoyda said.

Police are investigating why the two cars were moving so quickly. Hoyda said the second car was about five car lengths behind Russo's.

"I don't know if he was catching up with him or if they were racing," Hoyda said.

At least one unit in the apartment building was so severely damaged the occupant was told to evacuate until it is repaired, officials said.
