An internal meeting with Starbucks employees held three months ago stirred a powerful discussion on race in America. It has since prompted the company’s CEO Howard Schultz to officially extended the invitation to join the conversation to customers across the country.
On Monday, the coffee giant launched a new campaign called “Race Together,” which aims to tackle the polarizing topic through a series of steps built to stimulate action and encourage customers to engage in conversations on race with Starbucks baristas.
“[‘Race Together’] is an opportunity to re-examine how we can create a more empathetic and inclusive society -- one conversation at a time,” Schultz said in a statement on the company’s website.
Starbucks has sparked and sustained a growing discussion on race among its employees after Schultz held an internal meeting at the company’s headquarters in Seattle, following the deaths of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and Staten Island, New York.
More than 400 employees attended the impromptu meeting in December 2014 and were given an open forum to candidly discuss race among their colleagues and share ideas and solutions on how to address the topic through a collective, company-wide mission.

“This was not about demanding change, but demonstrating a willingness to embrace change and begin to bridge the divide to empathy,” Linda Mills, a Starbucks spokeswoman, told The Huffington Post in an email.
“As these events came to an end, we realized that this is the beginning of a conversation and one we intend to continue as a company into the future.”
As part of the campaign, baristas are encouraged to engage in conversations on race with customers and distribute branded cups with the words “Race Together” handwritten on them.
"If a customer asks you what this is, try to engage in a discussion that we have problems in this country in regards to race and racial inequality,” Schultz said in a video shared by the company this week.
The company has also partnered with USA Today to release a special newspaper supplement on March 20th, which will include “conversation starters” that also urge customers to carry the discussion online using the hashtag #RaceTogether.
According to newspaper, readers will also be asked to fill in a blank in one question: “In the past year, I have been to the home of someone of a different race ___ times.”
Schultz -- who has involved the company in several previous political discussions including a petition urging the end of the federal government shutdown as well as a pledge to hire more veterans, has been vocal on national debates but perhaps none as sensitive as the topic of race.
"The enduring success of Starbucks has been made possible because we as an organization, collectively and individually, have taken our company personal -- who might be different from you but doesn't have the same chance, the same opportunity and for that manner, may feel a sense of helplessness because of the unconscious bias people have towards that person," Schultz said.

I guess anyone stupid enough to pay five bucks for a cup of coffee deserves to be on the receiving end of a lecture on race from some snot-nosed barista.

When someone whom I probably have never met before starts blabbing his or her unsolicited opinion to me when all I am trying to do is get a cup of coffee, I consider that I am being lectured to.
What if a particular customer doesn't want to "Race Together"?
What if a particular customer is not of the opinion "that we have problems in this country in regards to race and racial inequality"?
What if all a particular customer wants is to get a fucking cup of coffee and get out of there?
This doesn't cause me to "have (my) thong all up in bunch", primarily because I don't patronize Starbuck's, and have no intention of doing so. And I'm not upset over it - I'm merely holding it up to ridicule, as it should be.
If you wish to start forming your opinions based upon what a pimply barista tells you, far be it from me to try and stop you. You'd probably get better advice from one of them than you currently get from the gang at MSNBC, anyway. Plus, you'd probably consider yourself more sophisticated taking advice from someone with a real Eye-talian sounding job title.

The remarks you seem to believe I copied from the article should be the first things that come to mind for anyone with a brain.

I didn't need to see an opinion piece on this matter before deciding that it is utterly ridiculous.

University of Virginia student Martese Johnson injured during arrest

University of Virginia students are calling for justice after Martese Johnson, who graduated from Kenwood Academy in 2012, was injured during an arrest.

There are questions about how police treated the 20-year-old man when he was taken into custody early Wednesday morning.

Video shows the UVA honor student getting slammed into the ground and bloodied during an arrest by alcoholic beverage control agents. It happened during St. Patrick's Day celebrations outside an Irish pub in Charlottesville, Va.

The arresting agency said the uniformed agents approached Johnson after he was refused entry to the licensed establishment. The agent who made the arrest, listed in court records as J. Miller, said in the arrest report that Johnson "was very agitated and belligerent."

Johnson, a third-year UVA student majoring in Italian and Media studies, was charged with obstruction of justice without force and public swearing or intoxication.

A statement from a group calling itself "Concerned Black Students" said Johnson's arrest was unprovoked and extreme. Johnson's lawyer, Daniel P. Watkins, said he needed 10 stitches.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe launched an independent investigation into the agents' use of force. The agents involved in the incident were put on administrative duties as the investigation continues.

UVA President Theresa Sullivan said she was disturbed by the video.

"I hate to see something bad happen to any of my students, whether it's on the football field or something like this. My heart went out to him. I thought how I would feel if I was his mother," Sullivan said.

About 1,000 students protested on campus Wednesday night. The angry crowds called for an end to alleged police brutality.

"Regardless of your personal opinions and the way you feel about subjects, please respect everyone here. We're all part of one community. We deserve to respect each other especially in times like this," Johnson said at the rally.

Meanwhile, former Kenwood Academy students are showing support for Johnson in Chicago by distributing fliers with "#JUSTICEFORMARTESE" on them.

"He always put on a smile and was just very nice and kind to everybody," said Kameron Jones, a Kenwood Academy student.

"We're all just shocked, and we're trying to figure out what can we do to stop this," said Amber Echols, a former classmate.

Sean Shelton, a Kenwood Academy student, says Johnson was his mentor.

"We're all young black men on our way to greatness, and the people that are supposed to serve and protect us are those taking our lives and hurting us for no apparent reason," Shelton said.

Rodney Gore of the Kappa Leadership Institute mentoring program - which Johnson participated in - says his arrest was unprovoked and extreme.

"This is a young man who has always been about making the right choices, making the right decisions. So yes, I'm outraged," Gore said.

Watkins said Johnson is devastated by the events. Watkins is preparing a vigorous defense for his client, who he said has no criminal record.
