What do we make of a Supreme Court justice who can’t quite grasp the meaning of the word ‘illegal’?

Sotomayor: Labeling Illegal Immigrants Criminals Is Insulting

February 4, 2014 5:53 AM
………

Sotomayor was asked at a talk at Yale Law School later in the day about her use of the term “undocumented immigrants” rather than the traditional illegal alien. Sotomayor characterized the issue as a regulatory problem and said labeling immigrants criminals seemed insulting to her.………

Since we all know that America is exceptional because of white, christian heterosexuals why would conservatives call people of color seeking a better future here in our country anything but illegals?

Yup... There's absolutely no difference between happy driving two miles over the speed limit, grandma scoring weed to help with her chemo, a family moving across the border in order to find work and food, and violent serial killers like Jeffery Dahmer. You're all criminals, completely indistinguishable from one another, who deserve to be labeled as such.

Apparently, it is wrong to label as criminals those who enter the country illegally.
But what shall we call those who are going through the proper channels by filling out the necessary paperwork and waiting in line to enter this country legally?
Oh, yeah – suckers.

Countless Americans have risked their lives to defend their right to be American citizens. For you to claim that people who  go through the procedures to become naturalized citizens are suckers is just another example of your Second hand stupidity.

Get a clue, Sparkles. The reason I called them suckers is that they are patiently waiting in their native countries when all they really have to do is to walk into this one. That way, they could become U.S. residents just as quickly, and with less red tape, as those who are still pouring Rio Grande agua out of their shoes.
Do you think that those who have jumped the border illegally (yes, there's that damned word again) should be rewarded by being allowed to move to the front of the line, ahead of those who are trying to do the right thing by following proper immigration procedures?

Sparks,I've never heard of that term before today, but after looking it up,it's a perfect fit for the troll.

Hey, Artie. How's it hangin'?
You know, it's been over six months since the Zimmerman verdict came in.
How much longer will it take you to recover and gather the sufficient stones to address me directly instead of sniping from the bushes?

Incidentally, Artie, if you did indeed look up the definition of the term ....

Second-hand stupid
The feeling that you are getting dumber by the minute, not from the beer, but from the stupid person near you that won't shut up.

.... you should have realized that by applying the term to me, you are not disparaging me, but rather you are disparaging those with whom I am having dialogue - namely, you and sparkles.
Nice going.

I created the term second hand stupidity for Happy Jack during a discussion about the health damages that can be attributed to second hand smoke. I believe that listening to Fox News for extended periods of time can lower a person's IQ. Happy Jack is a poster child for the Fox News "second hand stupidity effect. The opportunity cost associated with spending hours listening to windbags argue that creationism is science and birthers proclaim Obama was born in Kenya is that Happy Jack has become even dumber than he used to be.

Meh... I'll start calling illegal immigrants criminals for crossing the border when happy starts calling Dubya's administration war criminals for the very illegal act of torture. Law 101. But for some reason I don't believe the accuracy of applied legal definitions are really his concern.

Do you have a link (not from an opinion piece) that supports your contention that those that "jumped the border illegally" will be "allowed to move to the front of the line?"

One person who is in his native country is patiently filling out applications and waiting his turn to be allowed into the U.S..
Another person has entered this country illegally and is told that he may stay in this country.
Who do you think is at the front of the line?
Do you honestly need a link to figure this out?

Filling out applications for what, exactly?  Are you talking about a passport?

Yeah. Well I do need a link if the "line" that you're talking about involves the process to become an American citizen.

Yeah. Well I'm no immigration expert, but IIRC, if you're in this country on a visa, then you can apply for an "adjustment of status."  I'm pretty sure that's the first step toward a green card, which is permanent residency.

Now, under the Senate Bill that passed, undocumented immigrants can apply for a newly created adjustment of status called a Registered Provisional Immigrant.  First, they have to pass background checks, then pay penalties and taxes, and then they can apply for the adjustment of status.  But that's only a temporary status... it's not permanent residency.  They can't even apply for a green card for 10 years.

So even if you're talking about residency, I don't see how you can characterize that as "jumping to the front of the line."

A man living in Pakistan is attempting to emigrate to the States, applying for his visa and whatnot.
Another man crosses the border at night, immediately takes up residence in the States, and only then begins applying for the proper documentation.
Who, in your opinion, is at the front of the line?

That's not how immigration reform works, at all. Just for starters, this isn't an ongoing process. It applies only to undocumented immigrants who were here at the end of 2011.

Sorry, but if you want me to comment, you're going to need to be a bit more specific.

Thought this was interesting...

Law 101 CNN140207

It should be clear to anyone that the American people want immigration reform, by an overwhelming margin.

It's time for the extremists in the House to get out of the way and pass the Senate bill.

I know it's not going to happen, but hell, if it was almost any other issue, with numbers like this, it would pass by a voice vote.
