So much to discuss, but let's just start with this:

Pretty awful on its own, but add this, which no one seems to be talking about:

Government Shutdown 2013: H.R. 368, The Little Rule Change By House Republicans That Guaranteed A Federal Shutdown

Quote :
A video published by Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen, of Maryland, has revealed that House Republicans made a small last-minute change to House rules -- a change blocking a potential option that could have been taken to avoid the federal government shutdown in its entirety.

The video shows Van Hollen purposefully attempting to invoke clause 4 of rule XXII of the House of Representatives, which states:

Quote :
When the stage of disagreement has been reached on a bill or resolution with House or Senate amendments, a motion to dispose of any amendment shall be privileged.
Congressman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, was quick to point out that H.R. 368 states that the rule brought up by Van Hollen can only be offered by the House majority leader or his designee:

Quote :
Any motion pursuant to clause 4 of rule XXII relating to House Joint Resolution 59 may be offered only by the Majority Leader or his designee.
Previously, clause 4 of rule XXII could be brought up by any member of the House of Representatives to push a bill forward despite disagreements.

Not only did this H.R. 368 change the ability to use clause 4 of rule XXII, but it specifically applied it to House Joint Resolution 59, the appropriations bill that the House of Representatives and Senate are currently in a fight over.

By changing the rules on Sept. 30, House Republicans essentially guaranteed a government shutdown, since the ability to invoke the mentioned rule was transferred entirely to House Majority leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.
The GOP completely owns this shutdown.

I have known about that, but only because I listen to Progressive Talk. The so called "Liberal Media" certainly isn't pointing it out.

Tea party ringleader admits the GOP shut down the government for nothing
Quote :
What if I told you that one of the leaders of the tea party strategy to stop Obamacare by shutting down the Federal government didn't actually believe it was possible to repeal Obamacare until 2017 at the earliest but pushed forward with his plan anyway?

You'd probably get pretty mad, right? Shutting down the government over an unrelated policy dispute is bad enough, but if the people shutting the government down didn't even believe that their strategy would work, then they'd be guilty of inflicting pain and creating chaos for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

It might be hard to believe that anyone would admit to such a thing, but Wednesday morning on Fox News, that's exactly what Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham did. He started out by explaining that Republicans had shut down the government because they don't want to "allow" Obamacare to "go forward" because they believe it must be stopped "before January 1":

Quote :
The reason the government is shut down is Obamacare is unfair, it's unaffordable, it's unworkable, every single day there's more evidence of that coming out. House Republicans have remained strong in saying we are not going to let this bill go forward. We're not going to allow this to be inflicted on the American people. [...]

I think that almost every member of the House Republican conference, if not all of them, is deeply concerned about Obamacare, and knows that we have to do something before January 1 to stop it.
Then, less than sixty seconds later, he admitted that this strategy was doomed:

Quote :
Well, everybody knows that we're not going to be able to repeal this law until 2017, and that we have to win the Senate and win the White House.
Well, as infuriating as the GOP nihilistic strategy has been, one thing is for sure: It's now a whole lot less likely that come 2017, they'll still be in control of the House—let alone the Senate or presidency.
Well done cuckoo birds....Well done indeed! Very Happy

Next up? The GOP circular firing squad blame game, where right-wing lunatics suspend reality and invent coulda, shoulda, woulda, scenarios where they would have come out as heroes. Razz

Well this didn't take too long.....
GOP Rep Looks To Next Showdown: 'We’re Going To Start This All Over Again'
Quote :
As Congress looked to end the budget and debt crises – at least for now — a Republican congressman offered an ominous outlook on Wednesday.

Pledging to vote against the plan to re-open the government until Jan. 15 and raise the debt ceiling until at least Feb. 7, Rep. John C. Fleming (R-LA) indicated that he's already looking toward the next showdown.

Quote :
“I’ll vote against it,” Fleming said, as quoted by the New York Times. “But that will get us into Round 2. See, we’re going to start this all over again.”
Fleming was one of 144 House members — all Republicans — who voted against the deal that passed both houses of Congress on Wednesday. On Tuesday, he told reporters that Republicans wanted to use the looming debt limit deadline as leverage.
Fight On you morons! Please continue to chip away at that awesome 24% approval rating right up to the 2014 Congressional elections.

Good to see that the definition of Insanity is still alive and well in the diminishing Republican party.
