Todays election... Empty
PostSubject: Todays election...   Todays election... Empty11/6/2012, 9:28 am

It's going pretty much as I'd figured...

My wife was nearly denied her vote, since the list they were using was out of date enough to still contain her maiden name, despite having been changed a year ago (including re-registering to vote).

The poor women in line in front of me was on her third polling station because no one could apparently figure out where she was supposed to go. There was a worker on the phone with the county trying to find out, and I'm assuming they sent her to yet another location since she left not having cast a ballot. My wife had a similar story from when she was there an hour prior. And a mention of missing absentee ballots by one of the workers who was on the phone when she was there, though there's no verifiable info on that yet.

Should be interesting...

Smooth voting here in Illinois around 11:30. Seemed like there was more people than usual. Some lines at other precincts, but none at mine. Very Happy Whole process took about 15-20 minutes and I was not asked to show any ID. Workers were complaining about problems with some of the machines.

I came up with the same totals using states that Nate Silver says are blue or leaning blue.

Low information blueheads and rednecks in Florida might make it 303.
Still doesn't matter, you can stick a fork in Mitt.

A step in the right direction… but there are many more steps to go

Quote :
I’m trying to parse it all, and there’s a whole lot to parse. The big news, duh, is that President Obama won, and yes, I’m happy about that. Despite a lot of smoke and mirrors from pundits and campaign managers during this unending election cycle, the President has done a lot of good for this country, and has been a net positive in many ways. I think a lot more can improve in the next four years, and I’ll be curious to see just how he rolls up his sleeves and gets to it.

. . .

I’m thrilled Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock lost. I have to think that their, ah, extremely poorly thought-out comments about rape had something to do with that. I saw a lot of tweets along the lines of "Hey Republicans, if you want to win next time you’d better not talk about rape!", which I think is wrongheaded. I think politicians should be talking about it, but they should be getting it right. It’s one thing to score a political zinger, but another to actually change the hearts and minds of those same politicians. I want real change, not change in rhetoric.

. . .

I poked around a bit, and saw that a lot of the antiscience Congress critters were re-elected. Climate change deniers Ralph Hall (head of the House Science Committee) and John Sensenbrenner, and many others will still retain their seats (but not Akin, yay!). Relatively moderate Republican Roscoe Bartlett lost, and he acknowledged the reality of climate change. He’ll have to be replaced by the Republican majority, and sadly, there’s a long list of global warming deniers to choose from. Don’t forget Paul Broun ran unopposed, and he’s a full-blooded antiscience Big-Bang-denying antievolution creationist.

On a better note, I’ll add that Bill Foster, a moderate Illinois Republican, won a seat. He’s a high-energy physicist! Man oh man, I’d love to see him get on the Science Committee. Boulder’s own Jared Polis retained his seat in Congress, too, and he’s pro-science as well.

So good news and bad news on the science front.

Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann wins tight race in Minnesota

By NBC News staff and wire reports

MINNEAPOLIS – Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, the Tea Party champion and failed Republican presidential nomination candidate, secured a fourth term by winning a very tight race for re-election against Democrat challenger businessman Jim Graves early on Wednesday.

Bachmann led Graves by 3,256 votes - or just under one percentage point - out of more than 351,000 votes cast in the Minnesota 6th Congressional District with 98.2 percent of precincts reporting, according to unofficial state elections returns.

Are half the people up there in that part of Minnesota fucking crazy or what?

I don't know. I really don't understand it. I'm assuming Bachmann's precinct doesn't have televisions, the internet, or average reading comprehension above the 1st grade level. Either that or her opponent ate a small child during an interview or something. There was absolutely no reason to re-elect that crazy, glassy-eyed loon. She makes Sarah Palin look smart.

Well, at least the majority of voters are not crazy everywhere.
So long to two of the most repugnant dicks in congress.

Quote :
Voters run away from Rep. Allen West
By Jonathan Capehart

If the defeat of Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) is sublime, then the political demise of Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) is dynamite. Like Walsh, West was a bomb-throwing darling of the tea party. Like Walsh, I hope West will be exiting the Capitol — stage right.

The former Army lieutenant colonel and veteran of two Iraq wars and Afghanistan reveled in being provocative. He loved tweaking Democrats, African American Democrats and President Obama. After Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) criticized his support of a balanced budget measure last year, West issued a totally unhinged response.

Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up.
West also loved slave imagery. During an interview with Bill O’Reilly, he said the Democratic Party is a “21st-century plantation” for African Americans and its leaders are its “overseers.” And he had a grandiose view of himself as a black Republican. “I’m here as the modern-day Harriet Tubman to kind of lead people on the underground railroad away from that plantation into a sense of sensibility,” West told O’Reilly last year. And when he faced a primary challenge this year, West went after Obama. “He does not want you to have the self-esteem of getting up and earning and having that title of American,” West claimed. “He’d rather you be his slave.”

Such red-hot rhetoric played well with the right-wing fringe of the Republican Party, but it didn’t sit too well with the voters of his south Florida congressional district. West has been shown the door in favor of Patrick Murphy, a 29-year-old businessman. Next year, like Walsh, West will have the title of ex-congressman. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
cheers

Via David Frum:

America's voting system is a disgrace

Quote :
When the polls close in most other democracies, the results are known almost instantly. Ballots are usually counted accurately and rapidly, and nobody disputes the result. Complaints of voter fraud are rare; complaints of voter suppression are rarer still.

The kind of battle we are seeing in Florida -- where Democrats and Republicans will go to court over whether early voting should span 14 days or eight -- simply does not happen in Germany, Canada, Britain or France. The ballot uncertainty that convulsed the nation after Florida's vote in 2000 could not happen in Mexico or Brazil.

Almost everywhere else, elections are run by impartial voting agencies. In France, elections are the responsibility of the Ministry of the Interior, which establishes places and hours of voting, prints ballots (France still uses paper) and counts the votes. In Germany, an independent federal returning officer oversees a complex state and federal voting system.

In Canada, federal elections are managed by a specialized agency, Elections Canada. Mexico, emerging from a sad history of electoral manipulation, created in the 1990s a respected independent agency, the Federal Electoral Institute. Brazil has nationwide electronic voting, producing instantaneous, uncontested results.

No voting system is perfect. Britain has faced allegations of chronic fraud in absentee balloting. As I write, Lithuanian politics are convulsed by allegations of vote buying by one of its political parties.

But here's what doesn't happen in other democracies:

Politicians of one party do not set voting schedules to favor their side and harm the other. Politicians do not move around voting places to gain advantages for themselves or to disadvantage their opponents. In fact, in almost no other country do politicians have any say in the administration of elections at all.

. . .

Americans worry more about voter fraud than do voters in other countries, because they are the only country without a reliable system of national identification.

In no other country, including federal systems such as Germany, Canada and Australia, does the citizen's opportunity to vote depend on the affluence and competence of his or her local government.

In every other democracy, the vote is the means by which the people choose between the competing political parties -- not one more weapon by which the parties compete.

He's absolutely right. To his credit Obama mentioned it "We gotta fix that" in his victory speech. Let's hope he folloes through on that.

Partisan local hacks,be they Republican or Democratic, shouldn't be involved. It's time for the Federal government to create a non-partisan office to set rules that are fair to everyone and oversee that they are adhered to. And yeah,I'm also in favor of a some sort of national id that would be easy to obtain and would be accepted at every polling place.
