Senate Republicans Filibuster Buffett Rule
Quote :
The Buffett Rule, a bill backed by President Obama that would ensure millionaires pay a comparable tax rate to middle-class Americans, fell to a Republican filibuster in the Senate this evening, despite a new poll showing it to be overwhelmingly popular. While the rule, named after billionaire investor Warren Buffett, earned a majority vote of 51-45, it didn’t get the 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) was the only Republican to vote yes, while one Democrat, Mark Pryor (AR), voted no. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) did not vote, but put out a statement opposing the bill. The vote is no surprise as Republicans vowed to block it, but Democrats wanted to put the GOP on the record as yet again filibustering to preserve lower tax rates for the wealthy. A CNN poll released today found that 72 percent of Americans — including 53 percent of Republicans and almost 70 percent of independents — support the Buffett Rule.
Just another example of Republicans bending over for the rich while sticking it to the middle class and poor. Many more examples will follow in this thread over the coming months.

GOP: Trim food stamp benefits to cut deficit
Quote :
WASHINGTON -- Republicans controlling the House are eying big cuts to food stamps as they piece together legislation to trim $261 billion from the federal budget over the next decade, hoping to forestall major Pentagon cutbacks.

The cuts to food stamps would reduce the monthly benefit for a family of four by almost $60, repealing increases that were enacted three years ago as part of President Barack Obama's economic stimulus. The changes also would force up to 3 million people out of the program by tightening eligibility rules, the administration estimates.

The food stamp cuts would total $8 billion over the coming year and $34 billion over a decade. The program has been expanded greatly over the past few years - enrollment tops 46 million nationwide, up from about 33 million in 2009 - and now costs about $80 billion a year. The average monthly benefit for a family of four is about $500, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal research and advocacy group.

House Republican Plan: Slash Social Services, Increase Military Spending

House Republicans are set to advance legislation this afternoon that would slash billions from safety net programs while protecting military spending from cuts.

House Republicans are set to advance legislation this afternoon that would slash billions from safety net programs while protecting military spending from cuts. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File) The proposal includes $35.8 billion in cuts to food stamps, and $17 billion in cuts to Social Services Block Grant to states, which supports programs such as Meals on Wheels.

Reuters reports that defense spending under the GOP plan would "be $8 billion higher than levels agreed last August, rising to $554 billion in 2013."

House Democrats slammed the proposal, writing in a report on Thursday:
Quote :
"The House Republican budget for fiscal year 2013 reflects the Majority’s unbalanced approach to deficit reduction: they provide costly additional tax breaks for millionaires while finding savings by ending the Medicare guarantee for seniors, slashing investments that strengthen our economy, and shredding the social safety net."
