How can those with a conscience sleep when things like this are going on in the world?

Crosses and the Constitution

The pair of large crosses on Camp Pendleton do more than just serve as memorials to fallen Marines. They unconstitutionally evoke one religion over others, on public land.

January 4, 2012

The military, like any other government agency, cannot allow people to install large religious symbols wherever they want on public property. Once in place for any length of time, those symbols (and usually that means a cross) tend to be seen as established markers, and proposals to remove them are wrongly viewed as anti-religion and, specifically, anti-Christian.

That's what has happened yet again after two large crosses were set on a hill at Camp Pendleton. One was erected in 2003 by Marines who would later be killed in the Iraq war. That cross burned down in 2007 but was replaced a year later. Pendleton higher-ups should have foreseen that allowing the crosses to stay would have led to another one, placed there two months ago on Veterans Day without permission. Now groups that advocate for the separation of church and state are complaining that the crosses should come down, while others are arguing for them to remain as a memorial to Marines who have died.

The cross is widely used in this country to commemorate the dead; in Camp Pendleton, the hill adorned with crosses has become a cherished spot for men and women in uniform to honor their fallen comrades, bringing notes, dog tags and other memorabilia. But the fact remains that the cross is an inherently religious symbol. Those who claim it is merely a sign of mourning, not one that evokes one religion over others, should imagine how they would feel if a symbol of Islam or Judaism were placed on the hillside instead.

Ironically, there's another large cross on the Camp Pendleton base — one that many of the Marines there don't even know about — that does have legitimate reason to exist on its own. At the northern end of the camp, a white cross was planted on a bluff to mark the site of the spring below it where the first baptism in California is believed to have taken place in 1769. In that case, the public interest is historic, and the history is inextricably interwoven with Christianity.

That's not the situation with the two newer crosses at the Marine base, which shouldn't have been allowed without a plan for a more universal memorial site. One course of action that would allow the new crosses to remain would be to invite Marines of other religious beliefs to add their own symbols to the hill. That would ensure the separation of church and state while also being sensitive to the sense of loss suffered by those in the armed services. It would create a place where all people in uniform can remember the sacrifices made by so many.

Postscript: When a tilde is missing

The tilde in his name should have been used, but wasn't, in a story on Mexican presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto.

January 14, 2012

A Jan. 8 article about recent missteps by a leading Mexican presidential candidate prompted a critical response from one reader. But Jose Suarez of Los Angeles wasn't upset by anecdotes about the candidate's inability to name a book he'd read or to quote the price of tortillas, public blunders that have removed the feeling of inevitability that the candidate would return Mexico's once notoriously autocratic Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, to power.

Instead, Suarez questioned The Times' spelling of the candidate's name: Enrique Pena Nieto.

"I noticed you kept calling him Pena Nieto even though his name is Peña Nieto," Suarez wrote. "I cannot understand why a newspaper doesn't respect the spelling of a presidential candidate of a country.

For any and all Muslims who served and died, I am 100% in favor of allowing other members of their faith to erect any type of symbol they deem appropriate to honor them. The same applies to Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, etc.. You name it, I’m all for it.
As a matter of fact, I am all for anything that makes the writers at the L.A. Times or the New York Times whine, stamp their feet, and threaten to hold their breath until someone rectifies whatever happens to be the outrage of the day.
If you, however, have a problem with the fallen of Muslim faith being represented on a Marine base, then I guess that is your issue.

I fully intend to stage a protest of my own if I happen to find a Shark's restaurant open for business on Guy Fawkes Day.

Group protests MLK Day opening of TD Bank

4:43 PM, Jan. 16, 2012 |

After a Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance at Burlington’s City Hall Contois Auditorium Monday, about a dozen demonstrators marched on the TD Bank branch just down the street to protest the bank’s opening on the holiday.
The marchers briefly gathered in front of the bank, then tried to enter. Moments after the group arrived, Patrick Brown, director of the Burlington Multicultural Resource Center, said he would hand leaflets to bank tellers protesting the bank’s hours Monday. The leaflet read: “Dear TD Bank, you are defying the King holiday. Shame, Shame, Shame. This is a racist act. Shame, Shame, Shame.
However, two male bank employees stopped the demonstrators as they tried to enter the bank. The employees refused to take the leaflet from Brown, then locked the doors. A few minutes after that, another TD Bank employee said if people had legitimate bank business, they could enter, but otherwise, demonstrators had to stay outside.
A few demonstrators got inside and briefly held signs and chanted slogans, but then left at Brown’s behest. The demonstration then continued on the sidewalk in front of the bank.
Brown had said last week he was considering leading a demonstration against the bank.
Bank officials said last week that the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is important, but the bank has traditional stayed open on the holiday to serve its customers’ needs.

My, my – you certainly are a confused little monkey, aren’t you?.
Let’s go over the timeline of this conversation, shall we?
First, I wrote ….

To which you replied ….

Artie60438 wrote:

I then asked you who, specifically, would have a problem with the fallen of Muslim faith being represented on a Marine base.

Artie60438 wrote:

…. without telling me who, and without explaining how you knew with certainty how they would react to a fallen Muslim Marine being represented by a symbol of his faith on a Marine base. So I asked ….

happy jack wrote:

And how is it that you have this foreknowledge of their reaction to seeing Muslim Marines being honored for their sacrifices?

…. to which you replied by posting something about Peter King and a gay serviceman, while still completely avoiding answering my initial question. And, for good measure, you skirted the question even more by demanding that I provide to you examples of Republicans saying nice things about Muslims, or something like that. At any rate, I saw no reason to reply to your question because:
A. It came from left field.
B. I had never made any statement claiming that Republicans were running around saying nice things about Muslims, so I saw no obligation for me to provide such proof.
C. I really don’t much give a fuck.

Cynthia Nixon on Being Gay: "For Me, It Is a Choice"
The Sex and the City star, who has dated both men and women, draws criticism for her controversial remarks about homosexuality

Donna Kaufman ON Jan 23, 2012 at 3:08PM

As far as Cynthia Nixon is concerned, there's no wrong way to be gay. The Sex and the City actress began dating her girlfriend Christine Marinoni in 2004, following a 14-year relationship with English professor Danny Mozes, the father of her two oldest children. Though Nixon, 45, is an impassioned advocate for gay rights, she has caused some controversy in the gay community for believing that her sexual orientation is a choice.
"I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line 'I've been straight and I've been gay, and gay is better,'" Nixon tells The New York Times. "And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me."

Wouldn't that make her bisexual?

As far as whether or not it's a choice I'm going to borrow from the Paula Deen argument. Nobody, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered is obligated whatsoever to answer to the public over who they love or why they feel the way they do.

It could be a choice for Cynthia Nixon, but it might not be for the next guy. I would also acknowledge the low success rate of conversion therapy.

Prompting all of the furor was Martin's Twitter commentary on Super Bowl commercials, particularly one about the underwear clad David Beckham (below).

Tyler Perry Pulled Over, Accuses White Cops of Racial Profiling via Facebook

By Andrew Chow, JD at FindLaw.com
Thu Apr 5, 2012 8:13pm EDT

Tyler Perry's April 1 Facebook post about police pulling him over was no April Fool's joke: The highest-paid man in entertainment is accusing a pair of white Atlanta police officers of racial profiling.
Four days later, Perry's post boasts more than 117,000 "likes," 21,000 comments, and 12,000 shares. Atlanta police have launched an internal investigation, E! News reports.
Perry's predicament began when he admittedly made a left turn from a far-right lane -- a trick his security detail taught him, to make sure he wasn't being followed, Perry explained on Facebook.
Two white Atlanta police officers pulled him over, but apparently did not realize they'd just stopped Tyler Perry.
When Perry explained his illegal turn was to make sure no one was tailing him, one officer allegedly asked, "Why do you think someone would be following you?" Perry said in his post.
Before Perry could answer, the second white officer started "banging" on his passenger's side window -- apparently taking issue with the window's tint, Perry told his fans.
As both officers "badgered" Perry about why he thought someone may be following him, Perry said he recalled his mother's advice:
"My mother would always say to me, 'if you get stopped by the police, especially if they are white policemen, you say 'yes sir' and 'no sir', and if they want to take you in, you go with them. Don't resist, you hear me? Don't make any quick moves, don't run, you just go.'"
But then a second police cruiser pulled up, and a black Atlanta policeman emerged. "He took one look at me and had that 'Oh No' look on his face," Perry recounted.
The black officer spoke "in a hushed tone" to the two white officers, Perry said. "After that, one of the officers stayed near his car while one came back, very apologetic."
Perry was released, but news reports do not indicate whether he was cited for his illegal left turn or tinted windows. Georgia law requires drivers to approach a left turn from "the extreme left-hand lane" of a multi-lane road, Georgia Public Broadcasting reports.
Georgia law also makes it a misdemeanor to tint driver's or passenger's side windows under certain conditions, according to the state's Department of Public Safety.
The Atlanta police department's Office of Professional Standards is looking into Tyler Perry's racial-profiling claims, E! News reports.

My lawyer is a Muslim, handling my car accident quite brilliantly. She doesn't wear the burka, or whatever you call it.
