Unless Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s air conditioning was on the fritz, it’s unlikely he broke a sweat Monday evening during his first telephone town hall as mayor.

Most of the questions during the 40-minute session allowed Emanuel to tout his administration’s early achievements and future plans for the city.

“I’m so glad you asked this question,” Emanuel said in response to a caller who wanted to know what he’s doing to bring supermarkets to the city’s “food deserts.”

Emanuel talked about his recent meetings with the CEOs of several large chain grocers and how the city wants to make it easier for chains like Walgreens and Jewel-Osco to move into underserved areas.

Issues ranged from tackling corruption in government to improving K-through-12 education to reducing neighborhood crime.

Emanuel told one caller how his administration has pulled 650 police officers out of clerical, administrative and other assignments and put them back on the street.

“We’ve strengthened the beat officers, which is the backbone of the police department,” the mayor said.

One caller asked for Emanuel’s thoughts on having a casino in the city. Emanuel said he’s not an “enthusiast” of gambling, but he supports having a casino because he’s fed up with the city losing $20 million to $25 million a month in revenue to Hammond, Ind.

As the session wrapped up, Emanuel said, “These are great challenges facing our city, but they are also great opportunities to improve the quality of life, and most importantly, I want to thank you for loving your city.”

$20 to $25 million a month? Well, they did mention in an article a few weeks ago that 3 out of 4 cars were from IL. Or was it 1 out of 4? Nope..3/4 of whatever number.

Looks like the gravy train may run amok.

It was 3 out of 4. That doesn't even take into consideration the many buses that run from places like Chinatown that will get reduced or disappear entirely.

Say "BYE BYE to Hammond, EC ,and the exclusive neighborhood of Gary. The GRAVY TRAIN is about to stop.
One comment left under an article said, "They don't pay out".

They don't. They owe so much out they have to tighten their machines that affect the political machine(s). The machines are rigged compared to years ago. You can sell more hotdogs at $2.00 a pop, versus $4.00 a pop. Doesn't take a genious very long to realize slots are landing on "white areas" more than ever. You have to be a fool thinkng you can even break even. Traveling through run-down, crime-ridden areas afer years of abundant payouts for infrastracture tell everyone to avoid Indiana, like a "PLAGUE".

You politicians thought it was more important for take home cars, free gas, trips to Vegas, elaborate cruises, now, WHAT'CHA GONNA DO WHEN THE WELL DRIES UP FOR YOU?

You're stupid throwing money in a well.

New casino opens in Des Plaines on Monday. That's going to start cutting in to the profits.

Gaming revenue Numbers are out for July and it's much, much, worse than I expected. Taxes are down from 40 to 50% across the bpard in NWI and that Des Plaines,Il casino has only been open since July 18th.

its my understanding those werent actual revenue numbers released the other day, but instead were the states tax take. not sure how that differs...something about not actually being based directly on the months revenue...but either way.

if 12 days being open were the reason they had nearly 50% less reguarly monthly revenue, then your actually saying that no persons were on the boats after the 18th....

no matter how bad business was im pretty sure it wasnt that bad. especially since i happenned to be on one of em late in the month and honestly didnt notice any difference the number of people on it.

Revenue declines at Northwest Indiana gaming boats picked up steam in July, with the overall take at the five casinos dropping 8.4 percent compared to July 2010, according to the Indiana Gaming Commission's monthly revenue report.

ok found these numbers in the times today. competition however doesnt seem to be the problem. horseshoe actually had more feet in the door last month then in any month this year, however the avg guest is losing less many per capita then in past years.

to me thats indicative of the economy more then anything else.

Hehe, me and the "roommate" went the other night for a concert, then some gambline and we both walked off with about $200 more than we came on with. Smile

Sunday night was pretty crowded until about 12 midnight.

How's it going now? Haven't been reading too much news lately.

Up at my mom's. She said they are opening a 50 slot "MINATURE" Four Winds "baby" casino eight miles away, in Hartford, MI in eight more days.

They used to brag about the one by where the heck is it. Now it's not paying out.

I read somewhere, the trick to playing the slots is to wait 30 seconds between hitting your hot button to play. The odds are in your favor, if you take it slowly.

Let me know how that works out for you. ha.

I wish she wouldn't have told me that they were opening one eight miles away...when family gets together and politics get discussed...I gotta bring extra money along.

Oh, believe it or not, in the article I read by some gambler, he said if you know how to play CRAPS, the odds are on YOUR side, not the boat's when you play CRAPS.

How do you play craps?

Back to the casino in Chicago...don't think they are going to go with putting it in until they iron out the others they want to put in and the gov. claims he won't sign it the way it is.

Illinois is one, desperate state. Chasing away everyone. Big businesses are sprouting up "ghost buildings" in Will County, IL to escape the 9.75% corporate tax in Chicago, whereby they are getting away with a real low percentage (can't remember the exact percentage) in Kankakee and Channahon. More than just a "few" are setting up store fronts in Will County...and who can blame them?

Although Crook County is suing, they don't have a leg to stand on because it's perfectly legal. Seems they can cry even more now, because of the desperate measures that will only chase more away:

They are raising the property taxes to the maximum allowable and also, doubling the tolls. All of this never will answer the real problem:

There's not enough money in the world to go around to pay off these problems. (As MIRAGE said, in his signature line). People will avoid the tollways if they can. I have for many years. I won't give them a dime. I know how to get around the booths and get back on.

I don't think there will be too many businesses wanting to stay in Chicago. People can't afford the property taxes, and Emanuel is desperate..the governor is quite stupid. Mix them together and you come up with "Dumb and Dumber".

Trust me,it's going to get done. The gambling bill will get scaled back a little so Quinn can save face, but in the end he'll sign it.

Have to agree totally with you, Artie. I recall Quinn saying the way the bill is now, if every city/town wants to put in a casino to fix sewers, etc., they would be able to do it the way the bill is written now. He wants them to re-do it, and then will go along with the Chicago casino.

I doubt if it will draw those from the suburbs, but that doesn't mean the others they want to place in a south suburb somewhere, the tracks, airport, etc., may not affect Hammond.

How do you play craps? Tell me!!!!! Ya gotta be a sharp shooter, know your stuff, and it involves dice, right?

I suppose I could ask "Ask.com" for "How do you play craps?"

Boy, for one who claims to avoid casinos like a plague, I sure am into this new one opening up in Hartford, because to draw customers they usually pay out generously at the grand openings to attract the crowds, but as usual, they later "tighten" the odds.

Artie, one problem to scaling it back is that then they won't have the votes to pass the amended proposal. The senate and state reps will have to vote to change it before Quinn will sign it, and it barely passed as it is now.

Yeah,it's going to be tricky trying to keep everyone happy that's for sure. It has taken years and years to get an expansion bill through the legislature. But if Quinn lets this opportunity slip by,with all the financial problems Illinois has,he might as well just resign. Maybe he'll just flip. It certainly wouldn't be the first time.

Nice to see you posting BM.

Let's just say that I have my concerns, but in the end I do believe something will get pushed through. I also have a gut feeling that the South Suburbs will get screwed and there won't be a casino built there.

BTW,Nice job on the Morton game. JED's been playing the highlights.

Still alive...........
Ill. House panel OKs new plan to expand gambling
Quote :
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. | An Illinois House committee has approved a new, smaller gambling plan that backers hope can survive a threatened veto by Gov. Pat Quinn.
It passed 8-2. Democratic Rep. Lou Lang says the measure could be changed even more before a vote by the full House.
Lawmakers approved a major gambling expansion during the spring legislative session. But they never bothered sending the bill to Quinn out of fear that he would veto it. The Democratic governor has a number of concerns, particularly the idea of allowing slot machines at horseracing tracks.
The new proposal would still allow slots at racetracks but not at Chicago airports. It also lowers the amount of growth allowed for existing casinos.
It would allow five new casinos, including one in downtown Chicago.
