ENDORSEMENT: Hammond voters should re-elect McDermott
Quote :
In Thomas McDermott Jr., Hammond residents have a mayor who often shoots from the lip. He can be abrasive. But he also has brought some remarkable improvements to Hammond.

McDermott, a Democrat, is opposed by Republican anti-tax crusader George Janiec.

Among McDermott's greatest accomplishments is College Bound, which uses casino money to help pay college costs for homeowners' children.

Janiec said he wants to see the data to show whether College Bound is achieving its stated goals of boosting home ownership and increasing the educational attainment level in Hammond.

He also seems skeptical of its long-term viability. "At some place along the line, this thing's going to become a financial monster," he said.

With the casino industry struggling, McDermott plans to wean College Bound off the casino revenue during his next term in office.

Janiec said he would seek to bring small businesses to Hammond by taming the bureaucracy. "People are discouraged by politics and practices and attitudes by various parts of this administration," Janiec said.

McDermott's successes include bringing Cabela's, Munster Steel and Walmart to Hammond. An announcement about Potash Corp. coming to Hammond seems imminent. Work is already under way on the rail lines at that area.

McDermott also deserves credit for his efforts to bring hundreds of homes and businesses out of the floodplain, which should both ease the insurance burden on affected property owners and allow the outlots at the Cabela's site to finally be developed.

Janiec criticized McDermott's pronouncement that the city has gone from 950 employees to 650 during McDermott's tenure. Janiec correctly points out that some have simply been shifted to departments not funded by property taxes, such as the Hammond Sanitary Department. Point taken.

But money is tighter than it used to be. "In Hammond, I have less money than Mayor (Duane) Dedelow had to pay the bills," McDermott said.

It's also worth noting that the city hasn't laid off firefighters or police, especially in light of Janiec's complaint about public safety.

"People don't have a feeling of being safe, and it comes from every part of the city," Janiec said. Yet crime is down 7 percent, the McDermott administration reported.

McDermott has kept an impressive campaign promise to stay in touch with his constituents. Month after month, year after year, McDermott holds a mayor's night out in a different part of the city to hear the public's concerns and tell the public what the city has been doing for them.

McDermott has accomplished much for Hammond in his eight years in office. Voters should re-elect him so he can continue improving their city. We endorse McDermott.

He won't respond because whichever stooge he uses to conduct the interview will probably be told not to bring it up.

He's been sitting on the school board for quite some time now. Not once to my recollection has he been asked what exactly he's done there since taking office.
