PostSubject: Herman Cain Getting Thrown Under the Bus    10/3/2011, 5:25 pm

I knew that it was only a matter of time after Herman Cain got some recognition by winning some straw polls that his party would start to turn on him. Repubs loved the fact that they could point to him and say "See! We don't have any bigots in our party! We too got ourselves a black guy running". But let him start gaining in the polls and it's back to business as usual.....
Rick Perry's hunting grounds name provokes outrage ... at Herman Cain
Quote :
This should have been bad news for Rick Perry:
Quote :
In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family’s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance.
“Niggerhead,” it read.

In this day and age, you'd think the n-word would be universally condemned. Of course, since Texas is apparently not living in this day and age:
“It’s just a name,” said Haskell County Judge David Davis, sitting in his courtroom and looking at a window. “Like those are vertical blinds. It’s just what it was called. There was no significance other than as a hunting deal.”
Okay, but outside of Texas, you'd think it would not be controversial to take offense at the n-word. You might even expect the only African American in the Republican presidential race to strongly condemn Rick Perry for spending his time at this obviously offensively named place.

Taking offense at the n-word really shouldn't be a controversial position:

Quote :
A Perry rival, Herman Cain, said on “Fox News Sunday” that it was “insulting” that Mr. Perry and his family had used a camp with such a racially charged name.
There “isn’t a more vile, negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, until before, I hear, they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country,” said Mr. Cain, an African-American who is the former chief executive of the Godfather’s Pizza chain.
As Jed Lewison said, there's really no way you can argue with Cain's statement that the name of Rick Perry's family's hunting grounds was "insulting" and "insensitive."

Well, unless you're a Republican. In which case, the real villain of this story isn't Perry. It's Cain. Via Mother Jones:

Quote :
At RedState, Erick Erickson concludes: "It also seems to be a slander Herman Cain is picking up and running with as a way to get into second place." Glenn Reynolds remarks that until now Cain's "big appeal is that he's not just another black race-card-playing politician." Over at the Daily Caller, Matt Lewis calls Cain's remarks "a cheap shot, and, perhaps a signal that Cain is willing to play the race card against a fellow Republican when it benefits him."
Quote :
And of course Rush Limbaugh finds it "really disappointing" that Cain is "piggybacking on it trying to capitalize on it, essentially letting the mainstream media (in this case, the Washington Post) set the narrative."

Oh, how fickle those Republicans are. Herman Cain's race was an asset when he was insisting that the tea party (aka the Republican Party) isn't racist because he's a card-carrying member. And his race sure was convenient when he spouted those beloved Republican talking points about how African Americans have been "brainwashed" into supporting the Democratic Party.

But now that Cain's dared to tiptoe around the issue of racism in a not-so-favorable-to-Republicans kind of way—by taking the radical position that the n-word is "insulting"—well, now Cain's morphed into your typical Angry Black Man Playing the Race Card. And the Republicans aren't going to have any of that.

So, why is it ok for black people to say the word, but not white people?

Down south where I came from they think it's a natural word from 1960. They all get along. I grew up like I told you with the only black family in town.

N-Buss worked for the town where I grew up, black-topping the streets, made great money. His brother, Charlie cleaned the huge church. I went to school with N-Bust's niece. We never saw no color.

N-Buss made better money than my dad. Sure it was a small town, but we said it with respect. He took it as respect. I don't think it's appropriate now, nor shortly after I moved from there at age 11, but to some southerners, even, "retarded" is a natural word for them. They just take it differently.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/10/03/view_co-host_approves_of_whoopi_using_the_n-word_not_walters.html

Here's where Whoopi said it 12 times today, Barbara Walters' one time. Sherry didn't like the way Barbara said the word.

It shouldn't exist today, but even that Rev. Jackson referred to the POTUS as one. Why is that ok? Why is it a double standard?

Just curious.
___________________________________________________________________

In the 'Hot Topics' segment on "The View" this morning, the ladies discussed a Washington Post story about a rock with the word "Niggerhead" written on it at the gated entrance of a hunting camp leased and frequented by Rick Perry and his father.

Host Barbara Walters used the n-word while explaining the story, causing co-host Sherri Shepherd to take offense. Shepherd says she didn't like the way Barbara Walters said it. However, Shepherd was okay with Whoopi Goldberg, the main host of "The View," using it. Shepherd explained herself:

"When I heard you (Whoopi) say it, it was fine. You said it a different way. When I heard you (Barbara) say it, I didn't like the way you said it. Because when you say it, you say [inaudible]. And I don't like [inaudible]," Shepherd said.

This left Barbara Walters confused and wanted to know the proper way to say the n-word. However, Shepherd told Walters there is no right way for her to say it.

Walters said the n-word once in the segment while Whoopi Goldberg used the word nearly a dozen times.

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Texas Governor Rick Perry has hosted fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at a West Texas hunting camp formerly leased by him and his family called “Niggerhead.”

The camp’s entrance included a large flat rock with the words “Niggerhead” in bold block letters.

Perry isn’t denying any of the allegations. In a statement made to the Washington Post he says his family painted over the the word as soon as they took over the lease:

“When my Dad joined the lease in 1983, he took the first opportunity he had to paint over the offensive word on the rock during the 4th of July holiday,” Perry said in his initial response to the Post. “It is my understanding that the rock was eventually turned over to further obscure what was originally written on it.”

But how, when or whether this actually happened is unclear.

At least seven people the Washington Post interviewed said the name for a portion of the property, “Niggerhead,” was visible on the rock at the entrance “at different points in the 1980s and 1990s,” and that a former worker said he believed he had seen it as recently as three years ago.

In an interview with The New York Times on Sunday, Wallar Overton, the son of Perry’s scoutmaster in his home county of Haskell, said the hunting camp is still called by the racial epithet.

“It’s just what it was called from Day One,” Overton said. “I personally am not offended by the name, and I don’t like the word.”

“That’s just what people call it,” he said.
************************************************************************
You would be shocked culturally, but to them down south, it's normal!!!! I grew up with it.

That's why they call them "Rednecks!" (They still talk like that in MO!) It's all done with respect, too; unbelievable to you guys! You'd get killed saying it. It's like, "Sir" to them.

Because it has a totally different meaning when used by whites. When used by whites it is always a derogatory and demeaning term.

Most black people don't use the word and would be insulted no matter what race said it to them. It can be used as a term of endearment but it's usually with people that know each other well, As in "You're or That's my ni**a". Note that it differs from "ni**er".

Perry's father painted over the word as soon as he could. I don't think the old name of something they lease should be used against him now. Some of us old Valpo people still refer to stores that have been closed for over a decade - just to clarify locations when talking to people we know who will remember them.

For instance, I'll refer to the dollar store in the old Millers building.

Damn, Artie .... or should I henceforth refer to you as Janeane?
If you are going to steal the ideas and opinions of other people, you should not direct your intellectual thievery at someone who is sufficiently well-known so as to get herself quoted in the mainstream media. That's how little thieves like you get caught, you know.
Or, at the very least, since you have no original ideas or opinions of your own, at least give a shout-out and acknowledge the celebrity from whom you stole them.

http://www.theminorityreportblog.com/2011/08/18/janeane-garofalo-herman-cain-has-stockholm-syndrome-and-is-being-paid-to-run-for-president/

“[He's] in this presidential race because he deflects the racism that is inherent in the Republican party, the conservative movement, the Tea Party certainly. [In] the last 30 years the Republican party has been moving more and more to the right, but also race-baiting more. Gay-baiting more. Religion-baiting more,” Garofalo said.
“But, Herman Cain, I feel like, is being paid by somebody to be involved and to run for president so that you go like ‘I love that, that can’t be racist. He’s a black guy, a black guy asking for Obama being impeached.’ Or ‘it’s a black guy whose anti-Muslim. It’s a black guy who is a Tea Party guy.’

C'mon, that's not even in the same ballpark,Karen.

In any event it's a lose-lose situation for the GOP.

Talk about a waste of the 1st amendment - the freedom of the press to make complete and utter asses of themselves.

Reporters Spent Day Two of N-Wordheadgate Searching West Texas For Racist Rock

As you might expect, everyone else in the media was frightfully interested in the Post's story. But how could they add their own contribution? Well, as you might expect, everyone within driving distance of Paint Creek, Texas, began the 2012 Primary Season's Quest To Find The Racist Rock! The New York Times' Manny Fernandez performs the meta-journalistic task of reporting on all this reporting:
The day after The Washington Post reported that Mr. Perry had once hunted at and taken guests to a hunting camp that had the name Niggerhead painted on a rock at the entrance, cars and trucks traveled the dusty road leading to the area on Monday afternoon. The vehicles belonged to reporters with various newspapers and television news outlets, but their visits were short-lived, and it remained unclear if the rock was even still there.
According to what amounts to legend, the rock was believed to be somewhere in a pasture at the Krooked River Ranch Outfitters hunting lodge. Reporters were apparently turned away by the angry property-owners, who admonished the reporters and "escorted them from the property."

………

Does no one understand how many Pulitzers could be won by the first news organization to score the first interview with a rock in a field somewhere in West Texas? As it turns out, the locals were not sympathetic. In the words of one area woman, "It's a bunch of crock."

Agreed. There are far more relevant issues to discuss than this. And it's hardly a unique scenario, as the Daily Show highlighted the other night:

This is from the tail end of an article in the Huffington Post accompanying the same clip that you posted:

Watch both parts below and try coming out NOT thinking Rand McNally was kind of a racist.

Although I am quite sure it was said tongue-in-cheek, I was kind of leery about posting the part about Rand McNally being racist because of a certain someone here who might take it seriously and start a thread about it.
As to claims that Perry or his family painted over the offending word, I am waiting for the headlines to scream:

Yeah, well I don't agree that it "should not have even been news." Perry is involved in politics, and if he spent time at the place while it was called the offensive name, it's definitely newsworthy.

He certainly didn't help his cause by giving two different accounts about the sign...

At Rick Perry’s Texas hunting spot, camp’s old racially charged name lingered

Quote :
In his responses to two rounds of detailed, written questions, Perry said his father first leased the property in 1983. Rick Perry said he added his own name to the lease from 1997 to 1998, when he was state agriculture commissioner, and again from 2004 to 2007, when he was governor.

He offered a simple version of how he dealt with the rock, followed by a more elaborate one.

“When my Dad joined the lease in 1983, he took the first opportunity he had to paint over the offensive word on the rock during the 4th of July holiday,” Perry said in his initial response. “It is my understanding that the rock was eventually turned over to further obscure what was originally written on it.”

Perry said that he was not with his father when he painted over the name but that he “agreed with” the decision.

In response to follow-up questions, Perry gave a more detailed account.

“My mother and father went to the lease and painted the rock in either 1983 or 1984,” Perry wrote. “This occurred after I paid a visit to the property with a friend and saw the rock with the offensive word. After my visit I called my folks and mentioned it to them, and they painted it over during their next visit.”

“Ever since, any time I ever saw the rock it was painted over,” Perry said.

Both accounts are disputed...
Quote :

“I remember the first time I went through that pasture and saw that,” said Ronnie Brooks, a retired game warden who began working in the region in 1981 and who said he guided three or four turkey shoots for Rick Perry when Perry was a state legislator between 1985 and 1990. “. . . It kind of offended me, truthfully.”

Brooks, who said he holds Perry “in the highest esteem,” said that at some point after Perry began bringing lawmakers to the camp, the rock was turned over. Brooks could not recall exactly when. He said he did not know who turned the rock over.

Then Herman Cain stepped into the controversy and made it a campaign issue. So whether you like it or not, it's news. Is it really important? Maybe not, but it's damned funny.

I come from the south where people say ya "can't even POOP in the woods and the whole town knows!"

As far as twisting words, they do that too. When my dad developed tumors in his brain from the esaphagous cancer, word was whirling around in ole' MO that his brother, Chick out in California had the brain tumors. What a mess that became when one relative or friend of my dad's came walking in at the Rocky Ridge Ranch store my cousin owns, and she quickly reported "Ole'man, XXXX walked in, said your Uncle Chick has a brain tumor".

Finally we had to spread the word, Norm...not Chick!!!!

Even had my ole'Uncle Chick scared shitless.

They make such a big deal out of a rock?

Fine example how even a rock can become your friend in the news. News?????

Herman Cain: 21 Things You Don’t Know About Him

First CANDIDATE that grabbed my attention so far.

Comes across as a no-nonsense straight-shooter. Admits his weaknesses. Doesn't claim to know more than he does. Common sense approach.

Says what he is GOING TO DO. Not, "WILL DO".

Doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks of him.

That's leadership.

Romney needs to go to hell.

And, I'm WHITE.

Now, I'm not stopping with Herman. I'm just saying, so far he is one I am going to be following and comparing. :bball:

You two just messed up my post and it disappeared. I'm glad I checked this board before leaving for a long haul.

Shame on you, Artie. Fuck the past.

This is 2011.

I had absolutely no intention of even voting for the next POTUS spot; I didn't like anyone.

I don't care what damn flavor/color they come in.

I only picked up on CAIN and finally got interested. I didn't give nor do I care what damn color he is. He's so far the brightest bulb. I am not making a decision until after I study up on him. I like the guy cuz he is what I like so far.

The rest can go to hell; I don't care what damn color they are.
