OK, so it happened in Chicago/Crook County. I thought since they conducted a "Free Phone" thing a couple of years back to lure the criminals, they wouldn't fall for something like that again.

Wrong.

The law enforcement is really taking advantage of these dumb criminals!!!

This is not brought up in the ILLINOIS thread just because it happened in IL. Rather, I posted it here, because I thought something like this should happen in Lake County. Offer something free, sit back & laugh.

I would love to see this happen everywhere. I forgot criminals don't read newspapers or flip the dial on in the car for any news.

Sheriff's marketing sting nets 100 Cook County fugitives

More than 100 wanted fugitives were arrested in a Cook County Sheriff-led sting that persuaded them to show up to test electronic devices they could keep afterwards.
The hoax pulled in one crook who took a bus in from Wisconsin, as well as another fugitive who sprinted several blocks to awaiting officers because he was late for his appointment, officials said.

Sheriff Tom Dart is expected to reveal details of "Operation C.W. Marketing" later today at a morning news conference.

Law Enforcement should hold a free "Unclaimed Merchandise Garage Sale For Cons Only" and they'd still show up!

Just put a line underneath, "Fingerprinting only required before entering" and they'd still be dumb enough to show up. Very Happy

Well, the Hammond Times got the whiff, along with surprising detail:

Those are the kind of parties I would love to host with those heros.

Imagine the straight face you'd have to keep and the laughing that went on afterwards!

With promises of $500 gift coupons, plasma televisions and video game systems, dozens of fugitives accused of a host of crimes were duped into going to a West Side warehouse, where instead they were arrested on outstanding warrants.

As the fugitives pulled into the warehouse parking lot in the 2200 block of South Kenneth Avenue, they saw boxes being loaded into cars and were welcomed by staffers, signs and balloons from "C.W. Marketing." A "Mr. Ward" led the way, and presented the fugitives with a survey offering them a choice of one of three prizes.

What the fugitives soon learned was that the "C.W." in C.W. Marketing stood for the Central Warrants Unit of the Cook County Sheriff's Office, and "Mr. Ward" was sheriff's office investigator Neal Gaynor. The sting, dubbed "Operation C.W. Marketing," resulted in 102 arrests involving felony, misdemeanor and civil court cases, authorities said.

Among those arrested was Christopher Melnyk, 47, of Chicago, who had an outstanding warrant for driving on a suspended license. Melynk, sensing the C.W. Marketing prize giveaway was a scam, sent his uncle to fill out the survey in his place, according to the sheriff's office.

The uncle was "not thrilled" to be questioned by deputies, and instead told police where they could find his nephew, who was arrested, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said.

A month ago, the sheriff's office sent 10,000 letters to people with outstanding warrants, including those for DUIs, burglary and domestic crimes. Thousands of letters came back undeliverable, but more than 50 wanted fugitives made appointments to come to a Cook County government warehouse to claim their "prize."

Once inside the warehouse, the fugitives' identities were confirmed and they posed for photographs before investigators arrested them and took them into custody. Investigators then continued to accept appointments and pursue leads, making about 50 additional arrests last week.

"We had numerous cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies, some people we'd have been looking for, for longer times than others, that we have cleared off the books," Dart said in announcing the arrests at the warehouse Tuesday. "Whenever you can get individuals who agree to come here and help us, it's a real positive thing."

The entire operation was a two-week effort, and other than printing and mailing expenses, "the costs were very minimal," Dart said.

In addition to the arrests, the operation netted $5,000 in fees from vehicles towed as part of the sting.

Don Morrison, chief of the fugitive unit, came up with the idea, Dart said. According to Morrison, most of the difficulty came in trying not to arouse suspicion among the fugitives.

Another challenge, Morrison said, was not to arouse the fugitives' anger — not at being arrested, but at missing out on the fake prizes.

"They were more mad about not getting the TV than they were getting arrested," he said.
