With Drudge Report's Help, Birthers Latch Onto Phony Forgery Theory

In a predictable turn, conspiracy theorists are now rallying behind a bogus claim that President Obama's long form birth certificate is a Photoshopped forgery -- with a huge helping hand from one of conservative media's biggest names.

The fringe theory's rapid spread within hours of the certificate's release presents almost a perfect example of one of the White House's justifications for taking on the birther issue -- namely, that thanks to the internet, conspiracy theories can migrate quickly from the fringe and into the mainstream if left unchecked.

In this case, it took only hours. The forgery claim appeared to have first started as an offbeat blog post from an Atlanta-based art director at an ad firm, Bryan Michael Nixon, less than two hours after Obama's statement. By the end of the day it had become a headline on Drudge Report, one of the single most trafficked news sites on the internet. The debunked forgery revelation drew thousands of comments on messageboards, migrated to birther and truther conspiracy guru Alex Jones' site, while a video explanation was viewed over 160,000 times on YouTube.

Congressman to introduce birther bill

WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. congressman says he will introduce a bill requiring each presidential candidate to file a birth certificate copy with the Federal Election Commission.

The bill's sponsor, U.S. Rep. Bill Posey R-Fla., insisted the proposed legislation isn't "solely" directed at President Obama, who has addressed charges made by several people he was not born in the United States, The Hill reported Friday.

"This legislation has never been about one candidate," Posey wrote. "It's been about addressing something that's come up at least seven times before. With its passage, this won't be a distraction for anyone in the future."

It isn't clear why it should be a distraction now.

Sarasota GOP Will Honor Birther Donald Trump as ‘Statesman of the Year’

Trump has been tapped to receive the award on the day before the Republican National Convention, just 60 miles south of the festivities in Tampa Bay.

Trump: Romney shouldn't disclose tax returns until Obama proves his identity

So I guess that's the birther's case for why Mitt Romney is right to keep his tax returns and financial records under lock and key. But former Republican Party chairman and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says that if he were in Romney's shoes, he wouldn't hide his returns:

Were he in presidential candidate Mitt Romney's shoes, former Republican National Committee Chairman Haley Barbour said he would release more than two years’ tax documents, something Democrats have repeatedly called on Romney to do.

"I would," Barbour said on CNN's "The Situation Room."

Of course, that's easy for Barbour to say. He doesn't know whatever it is that Mitt Romney wants to hide.

Donald 'Bombshell' Fails to Blow Up

Donald Trump today pledged $5 million to a charity of President Obama's choice, provided the president makes public his college applications and transcripts and releases his passport history, a far cry from the October-surprise bombshell Trump had promised.

Calling the offer a "major announcement," Trump released a video via Twitter at noon to much ballyhoo, and his online followers grew by the hundreds in the moments before the video was released.

"I have a deal for the president," Trump said. "If Barack Obama opens up and gives his college records and applications, and passport application and records, I will give to a charity of his choice, a check immediately for $5 million."

When asked about Trump's comments, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe told reporters: "Direct your questions to Boston [Mitt Romney's campaign headquarters], he's Romney's biggest supporter."

Trump had been teeing up this announcement for days, and many hoped for a game-changing October surprise.

Separately, liberals were also hoping for a late-breaking smear on Mitt Romney that would alter a neck-and-neck race for the White House, but that also fell flat today.

A Massachusetts judge will hold another hearing Thursday before deciding whether to unseal testimony Romney gave in a 1990s divorce case. Some people have accused Romney of lying under oath so a friend and political backer, Staples founder Tom Stemberg, would not have to pay a settlement his wife.

Calls to Romney's attorney were not immediately returned.

Romney surrogate Trump takes another swing at proving his party has gone completely off the rails

Because Bachmann, Santorum, Gingrich, Cain and Ron Paul were not nearly crazy enough, or were crazy, but not in the right way, or merely because in the current era Republicans seem to not be able to tell the difference between a political contest and a three-ring-circus filled from bleacher to crowning flag with nothing but clowns. So here was Donald Trump, making a good Republican name for himself by (1) being rich and (2) stoking racist-premised theories about how the black president was probably not even a true American after all, and here was Mitt Romney, seeking his endorsement in front of a Trump-branded podium. Romney and Ryan then went on to happily use Trump as one of their many cash cows, holding private fundraising events with the clown, and saying nothing at all about Donald Trump's sole political or campaign policy position, which was that the black man was unqualified for an ever-shifting set of reasons. The Republican Party did not need Donald Trump to push their little racist conspiracy theories, but Donald Trump became the self-declared king of them and, in exchange, holds the position he holds today.

Does Mitt Romney—or any Republican, for that matter—care in the slightest that Trump is a rotten boil on the political landscape? Do they give a damn that the Republican brand has so thoroughly been reduced to pandering to the lowest common denominator of their base, all the rest of reality be damned? Of course not. No matter how big a fool this dimwitted, Palinesque publicity hound makes himself, Mitt Romney will still shake his hand, and Paul Ryan will still hold private fundraisers with the man.

Just like Mourdock. Just like Akin. And Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and the ridiculous Steve King, and Paul Ryan himself, the king of unicorn-based math and fleecing the poor to make the rich a bit fatter, and just like Mitt Romney himself, the poster child for the very sons of bitches that wrecked the economy by putting casinos within casinos, shoving those casinos in bigger casinos and claiming the whole thing was so goddamn patriotic and freedom-loving that you were practically un-American if you chastised them for it.

Welcome to the modern Republican Party. These are the people who are chosen not to be shunned, but to speak for the party, and guide the party, and raise money for the party, and appear on television for the party, and hold the reins of party leadership. Congratulations, Republican Party. Whatever depths of vapidity and grifting you might have been aiming for, I'd say you've managed to get there and then some.

Save the date: Conservative activist says Obama will be overthrown Nov. 19

A conservative activist who’s repeatedly called for the overthrow of President Barack Obama has set a date for when he thinks that might happen.

Judicial Watch founder Larry Klayman wrote Monday that the president had been indicted Sept. 18 by a citizens grand jury in Ocala, Fla., and convicted by a people’s court of defrauding voters by using a false birth certificate to prove his eligibility for office.

Klayman said Obama waived his right to a jury trial by failing to plead a response to the indictment, thus “thumbing his nose at We The People.”

A citizens’ judge then sentenced Obama to the maximum sentence of 10 years, Klayman wrote, and ordered the president to surrender himself into custody.

“Of course, Obama will not willingly obey the law of the people,” Klayman wrote. “He will attempt to hide behind the iron fences of the White House, perhaps cowering under his desk for fear that the people will rise up and demand his ouster.”

Klayman said that day could be Nov. 19, when he’s calling on “millions of Americans who have been appalled and disgusted by Obama’s criminality – his Muslim, socialist, anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, anti-white, pro-illegal immigrant, pro-radical gay and lesbian agenda — among other outrages” to march on Washington and demand the president resign or face prison time.

After previously calling for Egyptian-style coup, Klayman is now suggesting that Americans peacefully shut down Washington, D.C., as Mahatma Gandhi’s followers did in India.

“I propose bringing the victims of his reign of terror to a podium across from the White House in Lafayette Park to give their testimony on how he has singularly severely harmed and in some instances even killed their loved ones through his actions,” Klayman wrote.

He said Obama’s opponents must take their fight to a new level to prevent enslavement and preserve the founding ideals.

“King George III may have been a greedy ‘control freak,’ but at least he was a Christian,” Klayman said, referring to the British monarch at the time of the American Revolution. “The United States is being run by a Muslim bent on furthering an Islamic caliphate who seeks to destroy our spirituality and the body politic of our Judeo-Christian roots.”

You may recall last week, when Klayman began laying the groundwork for his One Million Imbeciles March by telling the world he would announce a date to show up at the White House and scream fruitlessly at it from the sidewalk his demand that Obama immediately surrender himself for incarceration, just as soon as a “citizens’ jury” returned an indictment against the president on charges of “eligibility fraud” (translation: BIRF SERTIFIKIT!!). It is a short indictment, announcing that “Defendant Obama” waived his right to a jury trial by failing to appear in any way by September 13, 2013. Klayman then tried Obama in absentia in front of a “citizens’ court judge” who found the president guilty on two counts of fraud against federal and state of Florida officials. Of course no reporters seem to have covered this momentous occasion, probably because none of them cared enough to find the Ocala Applebee’s where Klayman and his fellow truth-seekers commandeered a table to hold the trial, but more likely because everyone knows the media has always been in the tank for Obama.

Anyway, two counts of fraud, sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for each count, the Defendant shall forthwith surrender himself to the people blah blah justice something something. And now:

Donald Trump Floats Completely Insane Birther Conspiracy After Health Official's Death

Real estate mogul Donald Trump pushed his birther views Thursday in a tweet about the death of Loretta Fuddy, the state Health Director of Hawaii who authorized the release of President Barack Obama's birth certificate in 2011.

Fuddy was the sole fatality in the crash of a small plane carrying nine people on Wednesday. The Makani Kai Air plane she was on crashed into the ocean off the Hawaiian island of Molokai.
