Defunding NPR won't save taxpayers money. How is that, Heretic?

Defunding NPR won't save taxpayers money. How the hell does he conclude that NPR is being 'punished'? Just because strangers don't walk up to me and hand me $100 dollar bills doesn't mean that they are 'punishing' me. The bill is arguably unconstitutional because it likely is a bill of attainder. Art. I, Sec. 9, of the Constitution prohibits Congress from passing bills of attainder. The idea behind the bill of attainder ban is that Congress shouldn't enact laws meant to punish particular persons or entities, because the proper way to punish a wrongdoer is after the accused has been given a chance to defend himself at trial in a court.

Perhaps if you were federally funded, you would have gotten it right, pardner. Which line did I screw up? I thought it was 5, 7, then 5 again... | http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/opinion/l17cowboy.html?_r=1&ref=opinionLetter Preserving Cowboy CulturePublished: April 16, 2011 To the Editor: Re “For Cowboy Poets, Unwelcome Spotlight in Battle Over Spending” (news article, April 11): The tiny amount of federal money ($45,000) for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nev., helps encourage a generation of young people to become interested in and take responsibility for the legacy of the unique art, music, stories and culture of the American West. Specifically, the poetry gathering fosters new, young talent in cowboy music and poetry. My own trio, Hot Club of Cowtown, has benefited greatly from this funding over the past 10 years by helping us reach an audience for an increasingly obscure style of music: Western swing and songs of the American West. Over the years the gathering has become an important nexus of intercultural exchange and enrichment, encouraging stewardship of natural resources and appreciation of the outdoors while offering inspiration and opportunity for young people to learn from elders and join in this rich tradition. When the wars in Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan finally bankrupt us, oil has run out and we are all growing our own food, would Republicans in Congress like Mike Pence and Jeff Flake really like to sit down to a campfire where there are no more cowboy songs? ELANA JAMESAustin, Tex., April 13, 2011 No, lady - Republicans in Congress like Mike Pence and Jeff Flake would really like to sit around a campfire and listen to cowboy songs which were not written at the taxpayers' expense.

| Maybe it's becoming "increasingly obscure" because it sucks? | |
