Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. touted his city’s status as the largest city in Northwest Indiana in his state of the city address.
When 2010 Census data was recently released, Hammond took over the top spot from Gary for the first time in 100 years with 80,830 residents, McDermott told the capacity crowd at city hall Monday night.
McDermott said the city’s ability to weather the economic recession and uncertain housing market is due in part to the city’s encouragement of home ownership.
“... There is a direct correlation between the percentage of people who own homes and the stability of the city, overall,” McDermott said. “According to the Lake County Auditor’s office, the number of Hammond homestead exemptions has remained relatively unchanged.”
McDermott emphasized several ways that the city is making the community more attractive for families and businesses.
“Since becoming your mayor, I have not laid off a single police officer,” McDermott said. “My administration’s vigilance against crime has resulted in an 18 percent overall reduction in crime.”
McDermott highlighted economic development efforts, such as the recent openings of Cabela’s, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot in the past few years.
“These investments show confidence in our city and are the result of our dogged, determined efforts to keep and create jobs in Hammond,” he said.
