Things just got a little more difficult for the "just say no" crowd who want to bog down the legislative process with attempts to repeal health care reform....
MAJOR HEALTH CARE REFORMS KICK IN TODAY
Quote :
But as 2011 gets underway, even more worthwhile changes are taking effect, starting today.

The new year will bring important changes to U.S. health-insurance rules, as new provisions related to last year's massive health-care overhaul take effect.

The new rules are designed to help those caught in Medicare's "doughnut hole," offer seniors more preventative care, and limit how much of their customers' money health-insurance companies can keep for overhead and profit.

They all go into effect on Saturday.

These reforms may not appear especially sexy or high profile, but we're talking about some pretty important provisions. Seniors who've been stuck in prescription-drug "doughnut hole," will, for example, receive a 50% discount on the price of brand-name prescription drugs starting today. On a related note, seniors will also be eligible, starting today, for free "preventive services" screenings, including cancer tests like mammograms, and annual check-ups.

Of particular interest, on a systemic level, is the introduction of the new "medical loss ratio," which sounds more complicated than it is. This new rule forces private insurers to spend 80% to 85% of the money we pay them in premiums on paying for* actual medical care to its customers, rather than everything else (profit, marketing, executive salaries, overhead, etc.). In recent years, some insurance companies were spending as little as 50% of their premium dollars on their customers.

Americans almost certainly won't notice the shift resulting from the new medical loss ratio, but it's expected to make a pretty big difference, and it's one of the provisions that drew the loudest howls from the insurance companies and their congressional lackeys.

Taken together -- the reforms that took effect in 2010, coupled with the measures that kick in today -- we're talking about some major positive changes to the system. All of these reforms, by the way, tend to be pretty popular -- the larger concerns about the ACA notwithstanding -- but are nevertheless being targeted by congressional Republicans, who want to eliminate the benefits entirely.

Good luck with that, GOP.

One change the article didn't mention is that health care plans must now cover children through the age of 25. This change is very significant because the job market is so tough right now. Adult children who couldn't find work or were laid off will now have health insurance. Since you are so knowledgeable about healthcare, WJOB gives us an opportunity to really have some fun on Monday mornings. They have a show sponsored by First Senior Financial group of Munster. It is hosted by Don Heckwine and Steven Syring. Both of these guys must spend time listening Fox News because they don't have a clue what they are talking about when it comes to healthcare reform. I'm sure working in the private insurance industry, they are being bombarded with press releases designed to scare them. So naturally, they try to bash "Obamacare" whenever they have a chance. Several weeks ago, I called in because they were claiming that the waivers that were being issued to McDonalds and other major corporations were "proof" that the health care reform was a failure. When I called up and asked the "experts" to explain why the waivers were being granted, they didn't have a clue. The reason waivers are being granted is stop employers from completely dropping employees from existing health care plans during the three year transition period. It's great fun to embarrass a low information, misinformed righty on live radio show that he is paying for!

Remember that "Speak-Out" comment I posted? Where the person stated he received a letter saying his health insurance premium was going to be $3,000.00 more a year.

I got letters from credit card companies last fall to either "opt-out", or accept the annual percentage rate increase from what was 6.3% to a whopping 35% increase.

I closed them all but one...for emergencies.

My point is, the credit card industry and the health insurance industry raised their costs before the new rules kicked in. So, I don't see Obama Care helping. Had they put it to law right away, the credit/health industry wouldn't have jacked the rates up. Well, what I mean is, had it taken affect the day it was approved, it would have helped.

It just gave the industries time to do what they wanted before laws were due to take effect.

So then your answer would be to do nothing at all? Corporations will always do what is in their own self interest. However, in a perfect world, when the self interest of the corporation has a negative impact on the country as a whole, government needs to step in and enact policies that benefit everyone.

I'm pretty sure that already kicked in a few months ago.

The last time I heard them they were claiming that because of "Obama Care",they were going to stop selling health insurance Rolling Eyes Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

You guys are pointing out what you think is the "good stuff".

What happens after the kid graduates from college, has to pay back loans with no guarantee of a job? After 25 years of age?

How about the ones that don't even go to college?

Not to mention my point is and was: the insurance - health, auto and the credit card beat the POTUS at the punch.

They gave you an option to opt out or continue at the rate where the rate was going to go up to 35% after the law took place.

So, why is this good?

We all got screwed. Just like tiger mentioned about her two doctors...they take cash based on income or just exit.

We are now the third world. Thank you for condoning this.

While I am pissed off, my parents paid into social security and are denied their money that is rightfully their own while our politicians gather several paychecks, and corruption is on the rise.

May as well have Strogers and his like running the country.

Stupid.

Moody said it will take until 2014 for IL to rebound...how many of you think it will take Indiana to rebound with Rudy's hand out three years in a row?

It's sick and if you believe this Health Care Reform is a good idea....you need to read the thousands of pages the politicians didn't bother reading...or if they did, they didn't understand it.

Remember, we have a community organizer in office playing basketball, golf and takes vacations and now he has to face reality, after extending his vacation until tomorrow due to "exhaustion"

What "exhaustation"? Having too many parties?

You have a cite for this or is it just something you saw posted in some comment section?

Something in the paper cited stats that showed Medicare recipients get more than they paid in. My father figured that worked with his Social Security, too.

I'd agree with that. When my mother passed away, the hospital billed Medicare over $250,000 for her last procedure alone. What percentage they paid I don't know, but we were never billed for anything.

Dad was in intensive care for 9 days - we didn't pay anything. God bless Medicare and supplemental insurance. Neighbor is still getting bills for her brother, who passed away in September 2008, leaving nothing.

Not getting my point. You paid into social security, that's your money. No gov't entiety should dictate you are not entitled to what you paid in. Especially while the claim there was no inflation. Gas going up, food prices escalating, medicine out of this world....just a few things that went up with also rental if you lost your home. Gas and electric, no jobs, etc.

I agree with the donut-hole part, but depriving my WWII father of medical crap when there are bills to be paid and he had to buy BC/BS for my mom and him to cover what Medicare doesn't..is pure b.s.

Karen, do telll your neighbor...like I know what other people have done while taking care of relatives that died...when the bills come swarming in, they are not responsible.

Write..."DECEASED" and give them the cemetary's address.

They are not responsible for his bills. Those bills belonged to him, and have no bearing on your neighbors. Tell them they are wasting their resources on a countless count. Write down the cemetary's address, plot number and I assure you they won't receive another bill. Write down, DECEASED, and the forwarding address. How in the hell are they responsible for him?

She has.

My point, which you didn't get, is that if you figure it out, you get back much more than you pay in. Supplemental insurance, which your parents have, is very smart. Do you have it - otherwise, you'll be responsible for the 25% that Medicare doesn't pay.

I'm sorry, are you referring to the neighbors' that are sending back the bills, stating "DECEASED" yet are still paying?

It's not their bills, and they should call the FCC and tell them they are being harrassed for bills they are not responsible for.

As far as my mom and dad, yes...they always were responsible...but the point I was trying to make was the no COLA....they declared there was no inflation and that is B.S. And, the proposed $250.00 payout is for what? Shove it.

The other thing I was trying to make a point about is, while these millionaire congressmen are on a spending spree, they are denying my parents a cost-of-living increase which rightfully they paid into.

No one should deduct from your paycheck and find out in your '80s that you can't collect from what you paid into.

It would help to just withdraw when you retire, and tell the government to go to hell. You paid it in, it's YOURS.

As far as me...I won't be a burden on society. The politicians are making sure of that. I'll simply put myself to sleep and already donated my body to science.

Nice and simple. I worked for the gov't and I know how they operate. But, I refuse to go thru chemo, or anything like that.

I won't be a burden on society, that's for sure. I AM COVERED, BUT REFUSE TO PROLONG MY LIFE ON FALSE PROMISES LIKE THEY DID WITH MY SISTER IN LAW'S MOTHER AND NOW MY DAD.

We're all gonna die... I just hate the fact gov't wants to prolong the retirement age to cover their outrageous millionaire azzes at the expense of the middle class.

So when do you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor? Work til 70 when there are no jobs, and if you do have the job...drop dead from exhaustion.

Those are the things that make my butt want to chew tobacco.

Obama's healthcare shitz is gonna fly away - far away. It will be amended and it won't fly like he feels it will.

He has got to be the most uneducated POTUS I've ever witnessed. He can't lead...he has to be lead. He's dead after his term ends. I'm so sick of the b.s. coming from millionaires strangling people that are defenseless in age, yet paid into the system to cover their azzes and pensions, and needless paper shufflers. It never will end and I guarantee you there will be a shortage of doctors because of this nitwit.

You read today, I hope about the two past CEOs of the Chicago School System spending money like crazy on stupid shitz...that's how Washington works. They are all on the roll for nothing. Useless.

As far as Tiger, never met her, but she does not lie. Never will.

It's occuring outside Indiana...all over the USA. Doctors are not going to open up their checkbooks as ordered by Obambie.

You watch...FreeTime will start chiming in soon about the same problem. You watch.

Indiana is the worst place to go for medical care to begin with.

The best place to have a heart attack is Michigan. Trust me, it was in the news years ago. That's why I'm still alive.

‘Don’t Repeal Health Law – Go Beyond it to Single-Payer Medicare for All’: Doctors' Group Statement by Physicians for National Health Program
Quote :

"We reject the call by Republican leaders to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), even as we recognize the new law is incapable of resolving our health care morass," said Dr. Garrett Adams, president of the 18,000-member Physicians for a National Health Program.

"That's why we need to move to a single-payer system," he said. "In doing so, we'll save about $400 billion annually by cutting out the unnecessary paperwork and bureaucracy inflicted on us by the private insurers. We'll also gain the one-system bargaining power we need to negotiate lower prices for pharmaceutical drugs and medical supplies."

Adams said the "modest" benefits in the administration's health law include greater funding of community health centers, the expansion of Medicaid coverage, and "measures to restrict some of the most outrageous practices of the private health insurance companies like denying coverage because of pre-existing conditions or rescinding coverage when people get sick."

"These beneficial measures could have been enacted separately," Adams said. "But now that they're part of the law, we cannot in good conscience support the repeal of any provisions that might conceivably benefit our patients."

Adams said Republican leaders' call to repeal PPACA is especially objectionable, given that they have no serious alternative to offer by way of health care reform.

He also dismissed claims by the Republican leadership that tort reform will significantly affect the U.S. health care scene, noting that research has shown malpractice suits have a marginal impact on the costs of medical care.

Yeah, well the increase has absolutely nothing to do with the Health Insurance Reform act.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Blue-Shield-of-California-cnnm-2434756153.html?x=0&.v=6&cmtnav=/mwphucmtgetnojspage/headcontent/main/2434756153/date/desc/11/s3184999

Quote :
The company, a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association with 3.3 million members, which announced the move late Thursday, stressed that its decision has "almost nothing to do with the federal health reform law" and that ultimately the law will help slow down health care costs.

But responding to this most recent increase the company said, "our individual market medical costs are rising rapidly due to higher provider prices, increased utilization, and the fact that healthier people are dropping coverage during a bad economy," the company said.

It's frickin' absurd to blame every premium increase on health insurance reform. Especially since the Federal Government has no authority to do anything about it.

Quote :
The federal government does not have the authority to review and strike down unreasonable rate increase requests.

Historically, that authority lies with individual states. But some states don't have any rate review process at all and insurers can hike rates as much as they want.

Under California law, the state insurance commissioner has no authority to reject excessive premium increases.

"Many Californians will no doubt be surprised to learn that the Insurance Commissioner does not have the legal authority to reject excessive health insurance premium increases," California Commissioner Dave Jones said in a statement Thursday.

Instead, Jones has asked Blue Shield of California to delay the implementation of the rate so that he has the opportunity to ensure that the increase has been thoroughly reviewed.

One of the problems with the current system is that there isn't enough competition. That's the reason for the "insurance exchanges" which go into effect in 2014. There are a lot of problems with the health insurance industry. That's why the passage of health insurance reform was so important.
