Having to show your license when you are in your fifties...to buy liquor is such an idiotic law.
Why would they enact such a silly law?
Just to say downstate, "We did some work."?

Believe it or not,one of the benefits of that crazy law is that it forces people to keep their licenses current. I was told this by a liquor store owner that was shocked when he found so many people showing expired licenses. Not current? No booze for you! He also told me that Indiana doesn't even send out driver's license renewal forms in the mail. How stupid is that?

Another insane law he shared with me was that you can't sell soda and can't even have a machine inside the premises.

Why send out license renewal forms? You just have to look at it to see when it expires - on your birthday, by the way.

Here in Illinois a license is good for 4 yrs and also expires on your Bday.Because of that length,it's not something I think about. In fact,as of this moment I have no idea when the expiration date is.

IL also sends out the notices because you may apply by mail, and they send you the renewal sticker. This is a convenience for Senior Citizens...and also an added plus for those that need to be reminded.

Indiana is a backward state. More revenue if they'd only place the priorities where they belong.

Lot's of times while living in IL I got reminded it was time to renew the license to drive. I never paid attention to it...they reminded me.

You could do it by mail which is very convenient, or go straight to the DMV.

Karen, not everyone is as efficient and responsible as you, and that is a compliment.

Artie, thanks for the hindsight, cuz that does weed out the idiots, but doesn't really, on the other hand.

They just get denied the right to buy liquor. Unless they call a cop, then it's just plain stupid.

But looking at it another way, assume they come across someone with an expired license. So what? Unless they see him entering a vehicle and take the time to call a cop to say he/she is driving on a outdated license, what penalty is that?

Because even the clerks told me they think it's stupid even when they "know ya" and will get fined $500.00 if they don't ask for your license that they don't even glance at long enough to see how old you are. LOL

Stupid, crappy-waste of time...get them on the road for driving under the influence, blow a stop sign, not signaling, whatever...otherwise, the theory that they run across some looser with outdated licenses, and actually do something about it is pure Bull-baloney.

Why should liquour clerks be threatened to "check" while 15 customers are in line...all they were told were to look at the I.D. No one said they had to call the cops on out-dated I.D.s or licenses.

What's next....in your casket...if you love beer, they want proof the dead-azz is of age to go to the ground with a bottle he can't drink?

It's such a stupid law, I am thinking about submitting it to "That's Outrageous!" (Readers' Digest). Maybe then, Indiana will be embarrased.

I'm thinking that booze is probably a higher priority for someone who lets their license expire than for someone who doesn't.

I actually liked the 4 years. I got mine renewed while pregnant with my youngest (no, I didn't tell them my weight at that time), so every year he turned a multiple of 4, I knew I had to go in. Now I don't have a clue - should check that out!

Well this didn't take long....
Alcohol sales ID law under fire
Quote :
The state law requiring everyone purchasing carry-out booze to produce an ID has been in effect just three months, but lawmakers already are gearing up to undo it.

In a newsletter to constituents, Sen. Jim Merritt, an Indianapolis Republican, said he will propose a change when the General Assembly convenes in January. His proposal is in response to a host of complaints, particularly from senior citizens.

Local legislators, who have had similar complaints, are thrilled at the prospect.

And, area liquor store owners and clerks, who have taken customer abuse while enforcing the law, are overjoyed.

Rather than requiring everyone to present an ID, Merritt said he will fall back on the standard practiced by retailers for years -- asking for an ID from customers who "appear" to be under 40.
------------------------
Quote :
Dobis said the ID requirement was buried in an omnibus bill dealing with liquor laws. He said most legislators weren't aware of the new requirement.

Dobis said it remains a mystery as to who inserted the ID law into the omnibus bill on alcoholic beverages.
Are they kidding? How can it it be a "mystery"? You can't just insert laws anonymously, can you?
