Hammond is breaking ground on single-family housing today

HAMMOND | Hammond officials will break ground today on the first of five new single-family homes in the Robertsdale section of the city.
The 10 a.m. ceremony is in the 1700 block of Lake Avenue. The new homes will be the first multiple single-family development in about 40 years in that area.
The property was formerly the site of a 28-unit apartment complex that had been built in the 1950s. The property was acquired by the Hammond Redevelopment Commission in 2008 and demolished.
Hammond officials said the demand for new housing in the area is supported by the continued strong demand for homes in nearby Whiting, where almost 40 new homes have been built in recent years. !~ By Times Staff
