Democrats Jump Into Six-Point Lead on Generic Ballot
PRINCETON, NJ -- In the same week the U.S. Senate passed a major
financial reform bill touted as reining in Wall Street, Democrats pulled
ahead of Republicans, 49% to 43%, in voters' generic ballot preferences
for the 2010 congressional elections.

Yeah, well it appears that the lead is still holding a week later...

Democrats Maintain Advantage on Generic Ballot, 48% to 44%

Quote :
Democrats have a 48% to 44% advantage for the week of July 19-25 in Gallup tracking of registered voters' preferences for the 2010 congressional elections. This marks the second straight week in which Democrats have held an edge of at least four percentage points.

How many times do I have to remind you guys to pay no heed to those stupid polls. The true poll is when everyone votes.

By the way...we just sent 1 million to Pakistan cuz of their flooding, but we can't fix our own flooding here in the grand ole' USA.

That's right folks...this stuff is breaking, dividing the USA after giving them 3 billion, now another million (unless I got the country mixed up with another while Clinton was over "there").

Let's see....we can't fix our roads, rebuild Cline Avenue, fix the schools, wonder where the lottery money went, alongside the pensions, but Haiti - we gave them money...then this.

Meanwhile gangsta are crossing the border and more and more drugs are being seized, and more shootings/killings occur here rather vs the wars and we have plenty of money for campaign funds while politicians line their pockets and we support corruption overseas. I just don't get it.

Remember the old saying, "you can't help others unless you help yourself"?

The politicians are so corrupt, both R and Ds, that I don't think there is a way out of this mess unless we stop the campaign fundraising, and make them spend their own damn money. No more corporate or private donations.

Wasn't it not too long ago Hillary asked the public to help pay for her campaign expenses? Well, they are worth 10 million or more than that, so I'm surprised she didn't ask for a separate gift for her campaign funding to be paid off while being a mother of the bride.

OH, AND NO MORE LOBBYISTS! Only letters and emails begging from real time working citizens. Ya know....accountability, and where the money is going...(Rangler comes to mind), and no decisions made without strictly only from ordinary citizens. NO CORPORATIONS, NO UNIONS influencing who becomes a politician.

They all lie.

The fact is you are simply wrong about polls. Polls are all about trends, not single data points. It remains to be seen whether this particular trend is "real" or not.

True enough, but the major polls are quite good at predicting the final outcome. Gallup has an especially good record...

Quote :
Gallup's final generic ballot measure, based on likely voters, has since 1950 closely matched the total percentage of votes cast nationally for Democratic and Republican candidates in all 435 U.S. House races -- a statistic that bears a predictable relationship to the number of House seats won by each party. Gallup does not screen for likely voters until closer to Election Day, but historically, Republicans' turnout advantage in midterm elections widens the Republican-Democrat gap in the GOP's favor. Thus, if these numbers held through Election Day, the two parties would likely be closely matched at the ballot box.

It's a bit difficult to argue with 60 years of success.

I won't even bother to respond to the rest of your off topic nonsense. It's totally irrelevant to the Gallup poll results, which is what this thread is about.

In the end, as with all elections, turnout will be the deciding factor. It remains to be seen whether the Democratic voters turn out at a high enough percentage to offset the Republican voters, who are much more "enthusiastic" at this point.

Quite frankly, I've been amazed at how brazen and reckless the GOP has become, especially over the last couple of months. IMHO, delaying unemployment benefits and refusing to back the Financial Reform Bill were huge political blunders.

Not every Democrat votes in party lock-step like they do in Lake County, IN or Crook County, IL. I cannot believe any thinking individual can in good conscience vote to continue the disastrous policies of the Obama administration.

You say the Dems got a small bump? Not hard to do when their favorable were only like 11% or less to begin with. Come to think of it, wasn't Congress out of session? Maybe the respondents suffer from short term memory loss.
Laughing

Seems to me Maxine Waters & Charlie Wrangle aren't the exception but they appear to be poster children of what's wrong with the Democratic party today.

And BTW you seem to have neglected the power of the independent voters. I have a good feeling they are not inclined to vote for rubber stamps for Obama.

No, I have not "neglected" the impact of the Independents. Independent voters are included in the Gallup polls.
If you had followed the links, you would have also seen this graph (from mid-July)...

Gallup:Democrats Jump Into Six-Point Lead on Generic Ballot Vzzzr0hdnuy3fkux9ffdiw

As you can see, Independents do favor the Republicans over the Democrats, but it's possible that the gap is narrowing somewhat.

Quote :
With Republicans' and Democrats' support for their own party's candidates holding steady in the low 90s this past week, independents are primarily responsible for Democrats' improved positioning. Thirty-nine percent of independents favor the Democratic candidate in their district, up from 34% -- although slightly more, 43%, still favor the Republican.

And I think you misinterpreted my point about the "enthusiasm gap" between the Republican voters and the Democratic voters. I certainly didn't mean to imply that all Democratic voters will automatically support the Democrats (but most will). What's more troubling for the Democrats is that the Republican voters are more enthusiastic, and thus more likely to turn out to vote on election day. Any way you slice it, if the voters who vote for the Democratic party don't turn out to vote, there is no way that the Democrats can have much success in November.

I read a lot of news online from Washington to California...the people are fed up. Most of them on average don't trust that whomever they vote for will be honest after entering office I feel the same way. It's gov't for the gov't - not PEOPLE.

I pay no heed to them since then.

everytime I see polls and results I ask myself...why didn't they poll me, and exactly who are they polling?

I will pay attention when the day comes and they expose who they polled...their working background, not names.

Gallop Polls? 60 years? Ah....reminds me of those career politicians they never ask about...like the idiot in Congress on the Ethics Board that swindled the ethics....Spangler, Springer, what's his name?

The only real job is to work for the gov't. I'm so damn mad at myself for quitting a top job in my primey days being 22 yrs old working my way up from a typing pool to being the assistant to the Office of Personnel management Regional Officer...only because I got bored...they don't work there...I always came up with an excuse to invite every damn office at 219 So. Dearborn to have a party to liven up things...
I should have stayed and ripped everyone off. I was brought up with ethics which screws everyone at the end if you quit for ethical reasons.
What a dumbazz I was...I would have been loaded with a pension, life-long insurance, and who knows...I trained a Senator's kid to become a senator. Pizzed as hell I can't remember his name, but remember I made him so comfy.....

Ethics...no stealing time from the taxpayers, making yourself indispensible, and offering help in other departments when your boss was out of town....and I quit when I could've just kept planning parties.
Ever eat on your lunch hour with a bottle of wine, cheese and thou, inviting the whole office, sitting by Buckingham fountain...trying to kill time....

Yep, that's what we did back then...just made sure some lower down answered the phones.
God, looking back, I should have screwed all of you.

Polls still mean shiz; they change like the stock market which crashed down again today or yesterday.
Up and down like a yo-yo. Goes with the incompetency of any crooked Repo or Demo.

One day they're honest, next day the slammer doors shut on them.

Before you condemn me for planning parties...work was done by noon, starting at 7:30 a.m., worked every dept., but hell, they all loved to party on the public's dime.
Don't doubt that it's still going strong...except it's 3 hour lunches and reimbursement for entertaining... We paid our own way, but no doubt, they write it off as per diem now'a'days.

Hey, Scorp - I'll be embarrased, but go ahead and look up when I last posted a poll.

Bear in mind though, after you post it...since then, I don't believe in polls. I apologize if I did post polls in the past, because I used to believe in them.
Not anymore. Not even Gallop. I'm really interested as to when I last posted a poll...just out of curiousity.
I just want to make it a point now, that I no longer believe in any polls.

Yeah, well polls do change from day to day, and as I've pointed out countless times, that's why one needs to look at trends over time. The reason that I trust Gallup more than the others is because of their remarkable track record over the last 60 years.

Well that, and the fact that I've formally studied poll methodologies. I've used polls in research settings, and as I've also indicated previously, I have found well constructed polls to be quite reliable.

The stunning decline of Barack Obama: 10 key reasons why the Obama presidency is in meltdown

President Obama: In decline? (Photo: AFP)
The last few weeks have been a nightmare for President Obama, in a summer of discontent in the United States which has deeply unsettled the ruling liberal elites, so much so that even the Left has begun to turn against the White House. While the anti-establishment Tea Party movement has gained significant ground and is now a rising and powerful political force to be reckoned with, many of the president’s own supporters as well as independents are rapidly losing faith in Barack Obama, with open warfare breaking out between the White House and the left-wing of the Democratic Party. While conservatism in America grows stronger by the day, the forces of liberalism are growing increasingly weaker and divided.

Against this backdrop, the president’s approval ratings have been sliding dramatically all summer, with the latest Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll of US voters dropping to minus 22 points, the lowest point so far for Barack Obama since taking office. While just 24 per cent of American voters strongly approve of the president’s job performance, almost twice that number, 46 per cent, strongly disapprove. According to Rasmussen, 65 per cent of voters believe the United States is going down the wrong track, including 70 per cent of independents.

The RealClearPolitics average of polls now has President Obama at over 50 per cent disapproval, a remarkably high figure for a president just 18 months into his first term. Strikingly, the latest USA Today/Gallup survey has the President on just 41 per cent approval, with 53 per cent disapproving.

Related link: The Obama presidency increasingly resembles a modern-day Ancien Régime
There are an array of reasons behind the stunning decline and political fall of President Obama, chief among them fears over the current state of the US economy, with widespread concern over high levels of unemployment, the unstable housing market, and above all the towering budget deficit. Americans are increasingly rejecting President Obama’s big government solutions to America’s economic woes, which many fear will lead to the United States sharing the same fate as Greece.

Growing disillusionment with the Obama administration’s handling of the economy as well as health care and immigration has gone hand in hand with mounting unhappiness with the President’s aloof and imperial style of leadership, and a growing perception that he is out of touch with ordinary Americans, especially at a time of significant economic pain. Barack Obama’s striking absence of natural leadership ability (and blatant lack of experience) has played a big part in undermining his credibility with the US public, with his lacklustre handling of the Gulf oil spill coming under particularly intense fire.

On the national security and foreign policy front, President Obama has not fared any better. His leadership on the war in Afghanistan has been confused and at times lacking in conviction, and seemingly dictated by domestic political priorities rather than military and strategic goals. His overall foreign policy has been an appalling mess, with his flawed strategy of engagement of hostile regimes spectacularly backfiring. And as for the War on Terror, his administration has not even acknowledged it is fighting one.

Can it get any worse for President Obama? Undoubtedly yes. Here are 10 key reasons why the Obama presidency is in serious trouble, and why its prospects are unlikely to improve between now and the November mid-terms.

1. The Obama presidency is out of touch with the American people

In a previous post I noted how the Obama presidency increasingly resembles a modern-day Ancien Régime, extravagant, decaying and out of touch with ordinary Americans. The First Lady’s ill-conceived trip to Spain at a time of widespread economic hardship was symbolic of a White House that barely gives a second thought to public opinion on many issues, and frequently projects a distinctly elitist image. The “let them eat cake” approach didn’t play well over two centuries ago, and it won’t succeed today.

2. Most Americans don’t have confidence in the president’s leadership

This deficit of trust in Obama’s leadership is central to his decline. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, “nearly six in ten voters say they lack faith in the president to make the right decisions for the country”, and two thirds “say they are disillusioned with or angry about the way the federal government is working.” The poll showed that a staggering 58 per cent of Americans say they do not have confidence in the president’s decision-making, with just 42 per cent saying they do.

3. Obama fails to inspire

In contrast to the soaring rhetoric of his 2004 Convention speech in Boston which succeeded in impressing millions of television viewers at the time, America is no longer inspired by Barack Obama’s flat, monotonous and often dull presidential speeches and statements delivered via teleprompter. From his extraordinarily uninspiring Afghanistan speech at West Point to his flat State of the Union address, President Obama has failed to touch the heart of America. Even Jimmy Carter was more moving.

4. The United States is drowning in debt

The Congressional Budget Office Long-Term Budget Outlook offers a frightening picture of the scale of America’s national debt. Under its alternative fiscal scenario, the CBO projects that US debt could rise to 87 percent of GDP by 2020, 109 percent by 2025, and 185 percent in 2035. While much of Europe, led by Britain and Germany, are aggressively cutting their deficits, the Obama administration is actively growing America’s debt, and has no plan in place to avert a looming Greek-style financial crisis.

5. Obama’s Big Government message is falling flat

The relentless emphasis on bailouts and stimulus spending has done little to spur economic growth or create jobs, but has greatly advanced the power of the federal government in America. This is not an approach that is proving popular with the American public, and even most European governments have long ditched this tax and spend approach to saving their own economies.

6. Obama’s support for socialised health care is a huge political mistake

In an extraordinary act of political Harakiri, President Obama leant his full support to the hugely controversial, unpopular and divisive health care reform bill, with a monstrous price tag of $940 billion, whose repeal is now supported by 55 per cent of likely US voters. As I wrote at the time of its passing, the legislation is “a great leap forward by the United States towards a European-style vision of universal health care, which will only lead to soaring costs, higher taxes, and a surge in red tape for small businesses. This reckless legislation dramatically expands the power of the state over the lives of individuals, and could not be further from the vision of America’s founding fathers.”

7. Obama’s handling of the Gulf oil spill has been weak-kneed and indecisive

While much of the spilled oil in the Gulf has now been thankfully cleared up, the political damage for the White House will be long-lasting. Instead of showing real leadership on the matter by acing decisively and drawing upon offers of international support, the Obama administration settled on a more convenient strategy of relentlessly bashing an Anglo-American company while largely sitting on its hands. Significantly, a poll of Louisiana voters gave George W. Bush higher marks for his handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with 62 percent disapproving of Obama’s performance on the Gulf oil spill.

8. US foreign policy is an embarrassing mess under the Obama administration

It is hard to think of a single foreign policy success for the Obama administration, but there have been plenty of missteps which have weakened American global power as well as the standing of the United States. The surrender to Moscow on Third Site missile defence, the failure to aggressively stand up to Iran’s nuclear programme, the decision to side with ousted Marxists in Honduras, the slap in the face for Great Britain over the Falklands, have all contributed to the image of a US administration completely out of its depth in international affairs. The Obama administration’s high risk strategy of appeasing America’s enemies while kicking traditional US allies has only succeeded in weakening the United States while strengthening her adversaries.

9. President Obama is muddled and confused on national security

From the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to the War on Terror, President Obama’s leadership has often been muddled and confused. On Afghanistan he rightly sent tens of thousands of additional troops to the battlefield. At the same time however he bizarrely announced a timetable for the withdrawal of US forces beginning in July 2011, handing the initiative to the Taliban. On Iraq he has announced an end to combat operations and the withdrawal of all but 50,000 troops despite a recent upsurge in terrorist violence and political instability, and without the Iraqi military and police ready to take over. In addition he has ditched the concept of a War on Terror, replacing it with an Overseas Contingency Operation, hardly the right message to send in the midst of a long-war against Al-Qaeda.

10. Obama doesn’t believe in American greatness

Barack Obama has made it clear that he doesn’t believe in American exceptionalism, and has made apologising for his country into an art form. In a speech to the United Nations last September he stated that “no one nation can or should try to dominate another nation. No world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed. No balance of power among nations will hold.” It is difficult to see how a US president who holds these views and does not even accept America’s greatness in history can actually lead the world’s only superpower with force and conviction.

There is a distinctly Titanic-like feel to the Obama presidency and it’s not hard to see why. The most left-wing president in modern American history has tried to force a highly interventionist, government-driven agenda that runs counter to the principles of free enterprise, individual freedom, and limited government that have made the United States the greatest power in the world, and the freest nation on earth.

This, combined with weak leadership both at home and abroad against the backdrop of tremendous economic uncertainty in an increasingly dangerous world, has contributed to a spectacular political collapse for a president once thought to be invincible. America at its core remains a deeply conservative nation, which cherishes its traditions and founding principles. President Obama is increasingly out of step with the American people, by advancing policies that undermine the United States as a global power, while undercutting America’s deep-seated love for freedom.

Administrator: Would you mind removing duplicate posts? It occurs while I am ready to submit, telling me someone posted while I was posting and the option is "Modify or Save". I wait awhile and then hit save. Then I discover after looking back, my posts are duplicated.

Can you please put something there telling you "Your post has been submitted, however, after the person who is now submitting your post. Be assured you do not need to "Modify or Save". It will be posted once the current poster is finished with his fishing trip. Thank you.

Please remove my duplicate posts since yesterday. It just makes me look more looney. I am hanging on the computer today, awaiting for the second opinion on my father's re-occuring cancer and this takes my mind off of it. Sorry for hanging around for two days...but it's his life we are talking about, and a second opinion. All the way from Michigan to UIC downtown, to get a second opinion. So...this computer is keeping my mind occupied until I hear from my daughter.

Just eliminate duplicate posts.

Yeah, well what hasn't changed is the "enthusiasm gap."

If the "enthusiasm gap" is an indication that many Independents and the Democrats don't intend to turn out to vote, then the Republicans will post huge gains in the upcoming election. This may change as election day gets closer, of course. But at this point, the polls seem to indicate a low turnout election, and that's not good news for the Democrats.

The enthusiasm gap is a problem right now. The hate coming from the right is certainly going to be a challenge, but that's what's fueling it. The message needs to get out that if you want the government shut down and endless frivolous investigations to start, then stay home. I have yet to see any proposals from the right and some of their candidates strategy seems to be avoiding debates and serious questions from the media,or in other words, using the Palin strategy.

These cowards need to be confronted.
