PostSubject: Michelle Obama not ashamed now...   8/6/2010, 6:44 pm

As her husband celebrated his 49th birthday in Chicago with Oprah, first lady Michelle Obama was halfway around the world, on vacation with her 9-year-old daughter, Sasha, in Spain. The two are traveling on what the White House has described as a four-day "private trip" with several Obama family friends along the country's ritzy southern coast.

Of course, no first lady's life is truly ever private, and already plenty of drama is swirling around Michelle Obama's foreign jaunt. Some critics have laid into the trip's price, while others are highlighting an apparent diplomatic gaffe between the United States and Spain.

Yet the bigger public furor concerns the cost and appearance of the trip. In a scathing editorial published Thursday, New York Daily News writer Andrea Tantaros trashed Michelle Obama as a "modern day Marie Antoinette" for taking such a glitzy vacation while most of the country is struggling to make ends meet. The Obama entourage is staying at the luxury Hotel Villa Padierna, a Ritz-Carlton property often described as one of the world's top 10 hotels. Rates range between $500 and $2,500 a night. It's not clear that the Obama delegation picked this hotel specifically, or if the Secret Service — which often gets final say over where a protectee stays — made the accommodations call.

Either way, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that the first lady will pay her personal expenses — as will the friends who are traveling with her. But that only covers a small part of the ultimate expense, given that she has full-time Secret Service protection and has to travel with an entourage of staff. That cost, as well as her travel on board an official Air Force charter plane, is covered by taxpayers.

As the Chicago Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet reports, by the end of the summer, the first lady will have taken eight vacations. That includes a June trip to Los Angeles, where she and her daughters attended the NBA Finals, as well as an upcoming trip to the Florida Gulf Coast next weekend and a 10-day visit to Martha's Vineyard later this month with the president.

Michelle Obama is hardly the only first lady to travel overseas without her husband. Laura Bush and her daughters, Barbara and Jenna, traveled to Africa in 2007, where they went on safari. Yet her trip was regarded as an "official" visit and included several public events. According to the White House, this trip is entirely private, save for a photo-op with the Spanish royal family, who has invited the first lady and her daughter for an official visit.

The First "Lady" and all her friends work so hard for all of us that they really need this vacation, even at our expense? Would be nice if the rest of us could take an all expense paid vacation every few weeks. This administration is milking our country for all it's worth and driving us more in a hole that we'll never be able to dig ourselves out of. Just remember all this when it is time to go vote in NOvember and especially when it's time to vote two years from now and vote them out of office. We American's cannot stand another four years of the NObama's.

I read a recent article based on Laura Bush's book, in the Lady's Home Journal magazine.

She said that anytime they hosted a party, they had to pay out of her pocket. She also said their accountant told her husband that the biggest expense is the clothing she had to purchase (out of their pocket) and it was a terrible expense to keep up with.

I am wondering with all the parties the Obama's have held since he took office, if they are actually paying out of their own pocket.

I also am furious about how this couple seem to be entertaining and vacationing more than functioning as a couple with White House duties.

He is not leading the nation and he is not capable of handling foreign affairs.

Hillary Clinton recently echoed that statement publicibly that she insisted he was naive and not experienced enough to handle foreign affairs.

I believe he has spent more time campaigning, partying and vacationing than sitting in the Oval Office doing what he was elected to do.

My own mother mentioned the other day...."He made us think he was going to change things for the better, and it seems like he's just a party goer." She, my mom, I bet shares this opinion with millions of others that voted for him. They are and I am (even though I didn't vote for him) are really disappointed in his attitude toward our own country and it makes me mad that he sends billions to Pakistan while our bridges rot, roads rot, the economy is in shams and has the nerve to sue AZ.

By the way...read in the Kalamazoo Gazzette that the Mexican President is going to go ahead and legalize the drugs, to give the cartels no reason to kill anymore.

Now, that will be our problem, unless the USA takes on the same. Regulate, tax and collect revenue...give the gangs no reason to sell or claim turf.

The war on drugs won't be won, and the Mexican President is right; the killings will stop when the drugs are legalized and regulated.

Did anyone read about that recently?

Mrs. Bush was on Oprah and reiterated that they had to pay for their meals in the White House, and pay for the staff to stay late if they had friends for dinner. I'm sure the Obamas are getting billed also.

The president earns a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 non-taxable travel account and $19,000 for entertainment.

The position of the First Lady is not an elected one, carries no official duties, and receives no salary.

Taking any bets?

White House calling: Please will you make a coat for Michelle Obama

A young London fashion designer has been commissioned by US First Lady Michelle Obama.
Bunmi Olaye, 27, who runs Bunmi Koko with her partner Francis Udom, was given the honour after sending a prospectus of her designs to the White House.
Soon after a call came to the couple from Washington asking if a coat could be made for Mrs Obama.
Mr Udom said: “Someone said they were from the First Lady's office and she was interested in a cream coat we had featured and could we make it for her.
“We were stunned but kept calm and said we would make her a coat in September. I hope she likes it.”
Ms Olaye, whose company is based in Plaistow, first gained national exposure when former Spice Girl Melanie Brown asked her to make her a dress for this year's Brit Awards. Pictures of the singer wearing the dress alongside former bandmate Geri Halliwell featured in newspapers the following day.
Ms Olaye said: “It has been a really good relationship. Because of all the exposure we got, we've had a lot of interest from other people in the celebrity world.”
Further success followed later in the year when she won in the emerging designer of the year international category of the African Fashion Awards in Johannesburg.
She was born in Nigeria but moved to England at the age of 14 to go to boarding school in Hertfordshire.
As a child she had always dreamed of being a designer, and soon enrolled on a fashion design and marketing course at the University of East London.
She said: “I've always been fascinated by garments — probably from the age of about four. Initially, I'd just dress my dolls, using an artistic background.”
Bunmi Koko was founded in March last year, inspired by the designer's first name and the affectionate nickname, Koko, given to her by her partner.
Michelle Obama has boosted the profile of a number of up-and-coming designers since becoming First Lady in November 2008.
Designer Jason Wu created a full-length flower-covered dress for her inauguration balls and she has worn pieces by emerging names from London Fashion Week.

Now Artie, we've always respectfully tend to agree to disagree. I know you love the POTUS, but this is a very direct view why I am so upset....it's short, simple, and sums it up.....very few words to read.

While Obama preaches sacrifice, his family frolics in Spain

AS THE US economy endures high unemployment and a jittery stock market, President Barack Obama has preached sacrifice and fiscal discipline. But the pictures coming out of a sun-splashed Spanish resort may be sending a different message.
First lady Michelle Obama is in the midst of a five-day trip to a luxury resort along with a handful of friends, her younger daughter, aides and Secret Service. Her office said the Obamas would pay for personal expenses, but would not reveal the taxpayer cost for the government employees.
Elected officials - Democrats and Republicans - were reluctant to weigh in, not wanting to appear critical of the President's wife. But the trip provided fodder for television news shows, talk-show hosts and bloggers. Critics portrayed the foreign getaway as tone-deaf to the deep economic anxiety back home. Every first family takes vacations: the criticism aimed at Mrs Obama is that she chose to visit a foreign country rather than remain in the US and support its fragile economy.

Artie, DO YOU APPROVE OF THIS?????

Michelle Obama leaves the Spanish resort. Picture: AFP

Just last month, Mrs Obama flew to the Florida panhandle, a tourist draw hit hard by the oil spill crisis, and delivered the message that for parents ''looking for things to do with their kids this summer … this is a wonderful place to visit''.The opulence of the European trip also has drawn scrutiny. Mr Obama has urged frugality in lean economic times. He once cautioned that families saving money for college shouldn't ''blow a bunch of cash in Vegas''.Mrs Obama is staying at the Hotel Villa Padierna, a Ritz-Carlton resort outside Marbella. It has two golf courses, a spa with Turkish baths, views of the Mediterranean and a restaurant specialising in avant-garde fare. Room rates start at $US400 ($A436.73) and rise to $US6500 for a two-bedroom villa.
Mrs Obama flew in on a type of aircraft used by Vice-President Joe Biden. It costs the government $US11,555 an hour to operate the plane, according to the air force. Assuming a nearly eight-hour flight to nearby Malaga, the total round-trip cost of the flight is about $US178,000.

Michelle Obama Spain trip: what's true, what's not. No party with Antonio Banderas, Eva Longoria

WASHINGTON--First Lady Michelle Obama is facing criticism for her lavish trip to Spain's Mediterranean coast.
Let's get some facts straight:
* I've seen reports that Mrs. Obama brought 40 friends on the trip. The East Wing has told me earlier in the week that is not true. On Saturday, the East Wing confirmed that Mrs. Obama is traveling with two female friends and four of their daughters.

*On Saturday, Mrs. Obama and Sasha were in the southern Spanish city of Ronda.
The Daily Mail, quoting a paper in the resort city where Mrs. Obama is staying said, "The Obama party is due to attend a charity event hosted by actors Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria on Saturday night, Marbella newspaper La Tribuna said.
The East Wing told me Saturday, "They are not hosting or attending a charity event. There is an unrelated event taking place at their hotel with some big movie stars expected, but the first lady is not going, nor is she on any host committee."
*Mrs. Obama's total entourage is larger, with staff and security. The East Wing will not say how many staffers are with Mrs. Obama. I've seen deputy chief of staff Melissa Winter and another staffer in photos.
*Mrs. Obama always travels--domestic and international--with an around the clock security force--uniform and in plain clothes. Taxpayers pay their salary and travel expenses.

What she leaves out is taxpayers are on the hook for those 40 rooms and it has been reported in almost all newspapers that 40 rooms were reserved giving the impression it was for friends but I guess that they are for security and staff...and fails to mention at what cost.
Why does she need STAFF while on vacation?

The other little girl is away at camp, Karen.
My opinion is they took quite a few too many vacations.

No,because as usual, you're exaggerating the facts. Obama has taken less vacation time than Reagan, and both Bushes. Michelle Obama's trip is paid for by the Obamas themselves. The only cost to taxpayers would be the cost of the flight and security, both of which would be almost the same whether she went to Spain or the Wisconsin Dells.
I know it's hard for you righties to accept a President that doesn't go to bed every night at 9:30PM and likes to enjoy himself.

Got any thoughts about this,BWG?

The thing about comparing Michelle Obama to Marie Antoinette is that it's devilishly effective, now that Mrs. O and her friends are on that royal vacation in Spain.

Mrs. Obama and her daughter Sasha and some ridiculously wealthy liberals and hangers-on had a Spanish beach closed last week so mom and daughter could take a dip in the Mediterranean.

They strolled through the Alhambra — a famous palace of the Moors in Granada — and dined on strawberry gazpacho and lobster. And the Obama party is staying at an exclusive hotel fit for kings.

Register with Chicago Tribune and receive free newsletters and alerts >>

So the predictable happened when the New York Daily News Web site ran this headline: Material girl Michelle Obama is a modern-day Marie Antoinette on a glitzy Spanish vacation.

The Marie Antoinette thing went viral on the Drudge Report. Republicans thwacked her mercilessly for luxuriating on the Costa del Sol while so many Americans are out of work.

But there's one thing wrong with comparing the ultimately headless queen of France to the daughter of a Chicago machine precinct captain:

Michelle Obama isn't a queen.

She's first lady of the United States of America.

And if the first lady wants to take her daughter and her friends to Spain and spend her own money, how dare anyone rip her for it?

There are many legitimate issues for which the Obama White House can be criticized. But ripping on the first lady for taking a vacation to Spain is just plain wrong.

Yes, the government picks up the tab for her security and the presidential jet. But we'd pay that tab if she returned to Chicago. So relax.

Many of you know that I'm no fan of the Obama liberal big-government politics. I like President Barack Obama personally. It's his politics that drive me crazy.

So every time the White House hints at more federal taxes and regulations — policies that frighten business away from hiring unemployed workers who are desperate for jobs — I've got to do something to calm my nerves.

So I smoke a couple bowls of Hopium trimmed from the smiling Obama Chia Head sitting on my desk, and everything's all right.

But Michelle isn't going to raise the national debt by going to Spain. No one is going to lose their job. The Spaniards seem to like her. And what's wrong with Spain anyway?

Where do you want her to take a vacation, Wisconsin Dells like the rest of us?

There's nothing wrong with the Dells. Some Chicago politicians go to Aruba for the casinos. Mayor Richard Daley might go on an exotic trip with his developer buddy, Michael Marchese.

But working families vacation at the Dells. And I can't picture Michelle's wealthy entourage squeezing into a Paul Bunyan for the lumberjack breakfast before spending the day at a go-kart track.

Some pundits shrieked that they should have gone to California, because it's just as nice as Spain. California as nice as Spain?

Oh, shut up.

In California, do they have free-range pigs that eat nothing but special golden acorns until their flesh gets buttery, forming the foundation of the exquisite ham known as jamon serrano?

In California do they serve earthenware bowls of tiny baby eels, called anguilas, delicately sauteed with virgin olive oil, garlic and a touch of red pepper flakes?

Has California ever won the World Cup? Of course not.

I wish I could afford Spain as well, but I'm not going to criticize our first lady because her husband made several million on his two autobiographies before he turned 47.

"The bottom line is that optics matter," sniffed a Republican political strategist on CBS. "… At a time when we're seeing 9.6 percent unemployment, 70,000 jobs lost this month, people losing their homes, and it doesn't convey that she senses the plight of working families."

Yes, optics do matter. It's not that Mrs. Obama didn't consider those optics. But the daughter wanted Spain. So vamanos, chiquita.

If I were president and my boys wanted to go to Spain and watch soccer games, then on to England, France, Germany, Greece and Turkey, guess what?

I'd send them. And you'd send your kids where they wished, if you had the money.

A few years ago, every time President George W. Bush or first lady Laura Bush appeared to have even a smidgen of fun, the network news would juxtapose their smiles against some heartbreaking account of impoverished Americans eating road kill to survive another winter.

So I suppose much of this Marie Antoinette business is a reaction to all that liberal media bias against Republican presidents. The bias has been evident for decades, and it's one reason why networks and many newspapers have lost viewers and readers.

But Republican Party pundits are now acting exactly like the Democratic water carriers they once whined about.

They want to paint a portrait of Michelle telling her peasants to eat cake if they can't find bread.

But the real picture is that it's none of our business that a mom with a lot of cash wanted to take her daughter to Spain.

So let them eat ham.

John Kass asks "Where do you want her to take a vacation, Wisconsin Dells like the rest of us?"
Mr Kass obviously must be suffering from a slight case of the Fedheizmers that Mayor Daley seems to have on occasion when he convienently wants to forget something. In this case, Mr Kass seems to forget Mrs Obama telling the nation how important it is to help revitalize the stuggling economy in the Gulf Coast region, due in part to the oil spill disaster, and how Americans should make it a point to vacation down in places like Pensacola and New Orleans this year, and spend their vacation dollars there.
So tell me, Mr Kass, is Mrs Obama suffering from Fedheizmers as well, as she seems to have forgotten to take her own advice on where to vacation this year. I do believe this is now something like the FIFTH vacation the First Family has taken this year. Wouldn't Americans love it to be able to take 5 vacations in one year? I know I would. I also know I would love it to be done on the taxpayers dime, just as it was with Mrs Obama's most excellent adventure in Spain.
The problem is not the Republicans, Mr. Kass. The problem is a First Lady who seems to feel that the adage "Do as I say, not as I do." seems to be her credo, especially when it comes to vacations.

@coppercarla - please tell us how you came up with 70 Secret Service agents, since the Secret Service doesn't provide that info. According to this link http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/08/06/michelle-obamas-lavish-spain-vacation-sparking-criticism/ the 70 are Secret Service and Military. I am betting some number of those are the aircraft's pilots and support staff. By the way, the round trip cost of the 757 is $146,000. The article also provides info about the per diem reimbursements for those folks, you can find more detail here http://aoprals.state.gov/web920/per_diem_action.asp?MenuHide=1&CountryCode=1107 for the maximum reimbursement rates, by city, in Spain.
I suspect the numbers in that part of the entourage would not change much if she was in the US, and reimbursement rates in various parts of the country can be as high as Spain.
According to a writer at the Chicago Sun-Times the First Lady is traveling with her daughter, 2 friends and their daughters, http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2010/08/michelle_obama_spain_trip_what.html and she knows this by contacting the East Wing. Not exactly a huge crowd of nearest and dearest.

Fact is, Artie, so far Obama has flown the Air Force ONE 300 times since taking office.

Still haven't grasped how to properly use a search engine yet,huh From Newsweek:
We checked with the White House for a price breakdown of the trip, looking for a smoking gun. And honestly, there isn’t one. The bulk of the trip—the hotel stay and all meals—were paid for by the Obamas and their close friends who joined them. “Any additional footprint,” says a White House aide, “including additional rooms needed for security support, falls under the same rules as have applied to any previous first-family travel: the costs are split appropriately, with private expenses paid for privately; government expenses are paid for by the government.”
Like I said,Security and Air Force one are expenses that would be incurred no matter if she travels to Spain or the Dells.

Were you similarly outraged when Laura Bush took her daughters on an African Safari during her husband's Presidency????

She's not paying for security - the government is, just like they've done since, what, before I was born.
