WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days.

Before deciding what revenue options are best for dealing with the deficit and the economy, Obama said in an interview with CNBC, "I want to get a better picture of what our options are."

After Obama adviser Paul Volcker recently raised the prospect of a value-added tax, or VAT, the Senate voted 85-13 last week for a nonbinding "sense of the Senate" resolution that calls the such a tax "a massive tax increase that will cripple families on fixed income and only further push back America's economic recovery."

For days, White House spokesmen have said the president has not proposed and is not considering a VAT.

"I think I directly answered this the other day by saying that it wasn't something that the president had under consideration," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters shortly before Obama spoke with CNBC.

After the interview, White House deputy communications director Jen Psaki said nothing has changed and the White House is "not considering" a VAT.

Many European countries impose a VAT, which taxes the value that is added at each stage of production of certain commodities. It could apply, for instance, to raw products delivered to a mill, the mill's production work and so on up the line to the retailer.

In the CNBC interview, Obama said he was waiting for recommendations from a bipartisan fiscal advisory commission on ways to tackle the deficit and other problems.

When asked if he could see a potential VAT in this nation, the president said: "I know that there's been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something that has worked for some countries. It's something that would be novel for the United States."

"And before, you know, I start saying 'this makes sense or that makes sense,' I want to get a better picture of what our options are," Obama said.

He said his first priority "is to figure out how can we reduce wasteful spending so that, you know, we have a baseline of the core services that we need and the government should provide. And then we decide how do we pay for that."

Volcker has said taxes might have to be raised to slow the deficit's growth. He said a value-added tax "was not as toxic an idea" as it had been in the past.

Since then, some GOP lawmakers and conservative commentators have said the Obama administration is edging toward a VAT.

Nobody on the Democrats wants a VAT tax because it is regressive and hurts families. Only the people who want to stop paying big income tax bills want it.

The war...we need our troops home...this war is ridiculous. We need our troops home to just guard the borders and use those sonic man-less planes to hit on whatever. Why risk our lives for religious beliefs?

The majority of the voters feel our country has been deceived by this POTUS. Ever notice while being interviewed, he responds with "I'll have to consult with...." That's someone who doesn't know squat about anything unless some other politician/expert tells him what to say.

I fear for our country until he's out, along with Congress. No, I wasn't happy with Bush or the Congress then, but then again, who can we believe?

Our country just keeps getting deeper and deeper in debt, and all they do is raise taxes, but don't care that they make six figures, hold multiple positions, and why they don't care is the fact they have enough money to take care of their own future family(s) generations to come.

Look how wealthy Caroline Kennedy is....even if it's been since 1963....they made sure their kids are taken care of., The cycle has to stop. Quit bringing up taxes, tighten your belts politicians, and reduce the redundency, not patronage, no campaign donations. (that is where Obama lied, saying only personal campaign donors, not exposing the Goldman-Sachs gave him a million)...and limit terms.

But it won't happen unless we actually unite and quit paying taxes across the nation and screech them to a halt in Washington, which is just a dream. We're afraid of the gov't, so it won't happen.

By reading a certain article on how his stupid plan went for credit card companies, the people who paid on time, get punished. The comments from every one of them said, they are clipping them in half, and paying cash. He reeked the ones who paid to cover the ones who didn't. That's what I did...cut them up. I had no reason to be punished...so he can now stick that credit law up his butt. He didn't enforce it immediately, and now the richest of the richest are striking back. They are not going to use credit cards. Watch the next bank bailout because Obama doesn't know squat about economics. He always tells the press he has to "Wait until he hears from so and so". Slick Willy. I wish all our troops would just get together and demand to come home. We're not fighting for freedom, we're fighting for religion and oil. Screw them Muslims.

Drudge is the equivalent of Fox News. Nothing more than a right-wing dog whistle.

Yeah, Artie's right. Drudge Report is just nonsense masquerading as nonpartisan news (and poorly so). He deliberately changes the headlines of linked articles as he sees fit, often times to the exact opposite of what the article itself actually states. I caught Arclight and a few others regurgitating what they thought were articles refuting AGW, only to have the article itself state the exact opposite. There's classic example of that here.

As you can see, the Drudge Report comment section is my barometer for rational American thought.

So let's recap. Obama didn't accept campaign contributions from PACS. Obama didn't accept campaign contributions from corporations. There is nothing wrong with accepting contributions from employees of a company. He has also advocated vigorously for a reform of Wall Street and the practices that got us into this financial mess in the first place.

In short, your contention that "Obama lied" is demonstrably false.

Was he one of the regulators watching porn instead of Wall Street? I think not.
