PostSubject: Cameras Roll as Obama Schools the GOP   Cameras Roll as Obama Schools the GOP Empty1/29/2010, 8:52 pm

The guy I voted for showed up today big time and I'll bet right about now there's a lot of wingnuts talking to themselves and saying "What the hell were we thinking"? Laughing President Obama did an outstanding job boxing them in. He answered every one of their questions and now they are going to be on the spot for their obstructionist tactics. If they continue their tactics he should keep reaching out like he did today and let the people know who's really responsible for the gridlock. No teleprompter either,so there goes that talking point out the window.
Obama Goes To GOP Lions' Den -- And Mauls The Lions

Quote :
President Obama traveled to a House Republican retreat in Baltimore on Friday and delivered a performance that was at once defiant, substantive and engaging. For roughly an hour and a half, Obama lectured GOP leaders and, in a protracted, nationally-televised question-and-answer session, deflected their policy critiques, corrected their misstatements and scolded them for playing petty politics. (Full video and transcript available HERE.)

White House officials told the Huffington Post they were absolutely ecstatic. MSNBC's Luke Russert, who was on the scene in Baltimore, relayed that a Republican official and other GOP aides had confided to him that allowing the "cameras to roll like that" was a "mistake."
Quote :

So effective was the president that Fox News cut away from the broadcast 20 minutes before it ended.

I agree wholeheartedly. I decided to TIVO Hannity on Fox News last night to see his reaction. Not a peep about it on his show. Apparently a segment on "Larry the Cable Guy's tailgate party" was more important.

Obama should continue to try and schedule these since there is now a precedent for them. If the Repubs balk they'll get labeled as cowards and wimps.

If that's what it takes for them to quit stalling and start working together, then he should call more meetings like that.

Like I said, I'm independent, but it was getting to me how thr Rs were not cooperating.

He needed to show leadership long ago.

Oops, you boys didn't show the other side of it: "Promises, Promises...." See: two sides of the story.

Where's the transparency he promised, come to think of it, saying CNN would show the whole exposure of the HealthCare Reform Bill?

Today I read off Yahoo, the U.S. (FL) in -particular, can't accept anymore Haiti patients. Why's that?

We don't get free health care, but here, they get it without a bill passed. Who pays for this? Nancy Pelosi?

Are the hospitals full in the Dominican Republic? People are gonna die because of this....I don't mean to sound insensitive, but what more can Americans' absorb? Another nation gets free healthcare here, and yet, the average Amercian elderly paid all their lives and get the run around.

My father, as you know, has esophagus cancer. (Never smoked! & 86 yrs old). One year later, he still is living off the feeding tube. He was told by January, he would be eating normal. He paid extra for an experimental procedure. He wants to rob banks now, what the hell....why not (of course he's joking; just mad as hell). They robbed him....paying for BC & BS insurance and Medicare, the Haitai people get better care than we can ever expect.

My helicopter ride for ten minutes cost me $5,000.00 in '96. More than the triple bypass Dr's bill. Not including the 2 week hospital bill and follow up appts.

Thanks for the lift.

Funny how Haiti didn't need a health care reform to take care of them.

Cameras Roll as Obama Schools the GOP Empty
PostSubject: Re: Cameras Roll as Obama Schools the GOP   Cameras Roll as Obama Schools the GOP Empty1/30/2010, 4:17 pm

BALTIMORE — President Barack Obama on Friday accused Republicans of portraying health care reform as a "Bolshevik plot" and telling their constituents that he’s "doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America."

Speaking to House Republicans at their annual policy retreat here, Obama said that over-the-top GOP attacks on him and his agenda have made it virtually impossible for Republicans to address the nation’s problems in a bipartisan way.

“What happens is that you guys don’t have a lot of room to negotiate with me,” Obama said. "The fact of the matter is, many of you, if you voted with the administration on something, are politically vulnerable with your own base, with your own party because what you've been telling your constituents is, ‘This guy's doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America.' ''

Obama’s comments came in the midst of an extraordinary back-and-forth with Republican House members — a scene straight out of the House of Commons that played out live on cable TV.

Republicans invited Obama to appear at their annual conference; the president accepted — and then surprised them by asking that cameras and reporters be allowed into the room.

Republicans immediately agreed to the request, but they may be regretting it now.

Again and again, Obama turned the Republicans questions against them — accusing them of obstructing legislation for political purposes and offering solutions that won’t work.

"I've read your legislation. I take a look at this stuff. And the good ideas we take," Obama said. "It can't be all or nothing, one way or the other … If we put together a stimulus package in which a third of it is tax cuts that normally you guys would support, and support for states and the unemployed and helping people stay on COBRA, that certainly your governors would support … and maybe there are some things in there, with respect to infrastructure, that you don't like … If there's uniform opposition because the Republican caucus doesn't get 100 percent or 80 percent of what you want, then it's going to be difficult to get a deal done, because that's not how democracy works."

House Minority Leader John Boehner, who introduced Obama to his colleagues and gave the president a stack of Republican policy proposals, said afterward that the event had been “a good first step in having more of a dialogue.”

Arizona Rep. Jeff Flake said the event had helped his party by showing that Republicans have offered alternatives to Obama’s plans.

"The real effort here was to convince people out there that we have offered solutions, we've offered things,” Flake said. “For him to say, ‘Yes, I've read your proposal; it's a substantive proposal’ — that's good. That's a huge thing for Republicans."

House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence of Indiana began Friday’s question-and-answer session by asking Obama whether he’d embrace “across the board” tax cuts as a way to revive the economy, and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) asked him to support a line-item veto to help achieve a balanced budget.

Obama pushed back hard, accusing Republicans of putting party before principle and voting against his 2009 stimulus plan but then attending “ribbon cuttings” for stimulus projects in their own districts.

If Republicans believe in both across-the-board tax cuts and a balanced budget, Obama said he’d like to see their math.

The afternoon started on a more conciliatory note, with Obama saying in opening remarks hat he expects Republicans to challenge his ideas — and that he understands that there are sometimes fundamental policy differences between the parties.

"Having differences of opinion, having a real debate about matters of domestic policy and national security, that's something that's not only good for our country, it's absolutely essential,” he said.

But he also criticized the Republicans for reflexively opposing his policies — even when, he said, they were in line with GOP principles. And the encounter got progressively more raucous from there.

Obama urged Republicans to come to the table and work with him on policy compromises, saying Americans "didn't send us to Washington to fight each other in some political steel-cage match."

What voters don’t want, he said, is "for Washington to continue being so Washington-like."

The president asked the Republicans to support his proposal to provide small businesses with a $5000 tax credit for each new employee they add — an idea Republicans panned before he even made the offer. He also asked them to support his plan to freeze nonmilitary discretionary spending for three years.

"Join me," Obama asked. "Nothing in this proposal that runs contrary to the ideological predisposition of this caucus."

"We have seen some party-line votes that have been disappointing," he said, recalling the stimulus fight. "I didn't understand then, and I still don't understand, why we got opposition in this caucus for almost $300 billion in badly needed tax cuts for the American people" and other assistance and infrastructure projects.

Obama jabbed: "Let's face it, some of you have been at the ribbon-cuttings for some of these important projects in your communities."

Continuing on a confrontational tack, Obama defended key components of his agenda, including the proposed fee on bailed-out banks — telling Boehner: "If you listen to the American people, John, they’ll tell you they want their money back."

At the end of his remarks — before taking questions —– Obama told Republicans it's time to make a choice between aiming for "success at the polls" or "lasting success" for the country. "Just think about it for a while," he said. "We don't have to put it up for a vote today."

Freshman Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) went after the president harder, accusing him of breaking promising about transparency, lobbyists and partisanship.

[size=18]“I can look you in the eye and tell you we have not been obstructionists,” he said.

Obama acknowledged that Chaffetz had a “legitimate complaint” about not putting health care negotiations on C-SPAN — as the president had vowed they would be — but he also asked Chaffetz what he was doing within his own caucus to make sure that Republicans were working with him in bipartisan way.

Midway through the questions and answers, Pence said that there would be just a few more questions.

Obama said he wasn’t in any hurry to leave.

"I'm having fun,” Obama said. “This is great."

Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) seemed to enjoy the experience a little less.

Price said he’s asked to meet with Obama every week for a year but that his question-and-answer round — about health care proposals Republicans have offered — was the first time they’ve actually spoken.

“He didn't even address the question,” Price grumbled afterward. “He distorted the premise and refused to even answer the question."

Price said Republicans had proven that they have ideas, that Obama has received them and that he wouldn’t answer their questions.

"I don't know that you could get any more out of that than we did,” he said.

Yeah, well I notice you keep insisting that you're an "Independent."

If that's true, then tell us, if you would, when was the last time that you voted for a Democratic Party candidate on the National level?

I don't vote in Primaries. I vote the day I can choose between both parties or independents.

I don't vote straight Demo or Repos. I do my homework, then vote. I didn't vote for Obama, but though I had much less choice, went for McCain, because we were and still in war. I worked in Chicago and know how it works in Chicago. I know a lot of politicians from IL and that detrmined my vote.

If you need to know who I KNEW, IT WAS THE FORMER COUNTY ACCESSOR, her family. and I was very politically involved back then in IL as an OUTSIDER looking in. Those working for
Thornton Township (THOSE FRIENDS ARE DEAD, OR RETIRED), I know my neighbors who held political jobs while growing up and moving in Dolton in '65. I know the ins and outs of it. Most are dead neighbors, and the ones my age, passed away by accident.

The most crooked form of gov't is the Thornton Township. I COULD GET A JOB AT THE SNAP OF MY FINGERS JUST BECAUSE I KNOW A LOT OF THEM that used to work there, but I am not a butt-kisser.

I worked for the "Feds, so I KNOW WHat it's all about. My only regret is, I should have just stuck with the Feds and fed off the public trough. I left for ethical reasons. I know what they do, I saw whqat they did, and much as they love me, I bidded "Adios".

i HAVE A CONSCIOUS.
How I voted and how I continue to vote?

I do my research, I read the papers, and I read the forums, and I vote Demo, Repo or Independent. Green looks greener and better everyday. I'm sick of th same old names and the ages, my gosh, some 70 yr old has no business being in a workplace, unless it's a greeter at Walmart. Move over...technology changed since the typewriter days.

I didn't vote for Obama, but voted for McCain, didn't like either, split the rest up between what I knew, studying backgrounds, which is called HISTORY.

I didn't vote on skin color. That's for sure.

Our parents used to teach us to pull the lever straight down to demobrats onlyl and I and the rest of my siblings do vote the way we were not taught. Pick and choose. No straight parties.

You know, this is a pretty straightforward question....

To clarify, "National level" means a vote for a candidate for the US House of Representatives, the US Senate, or for the Presidency.

It looks like you're trying to avoid answering the question. Have you ever voted for a Democratic party candidate for one of these offices?

clinton, nationally. Locally, always Democrats while living in Dolton, until I "GREW UP" and realized what and how the political system worked.

We all grew up with parents that were taught to teach us to pull the straight ticket. Not no more. Non of us do. Non of us do that anymore. I did vote for Bush the first time, and the second time I sent an email telling him to go to hell.

Since Kennedy, blow job or not, Clinton lead the country in the right direction. I don't care how many b jobs he got...look at Edwards....point is, the country was in a surplus. I don't vote because all the politicians cheat like sports players....just deliver after you've had your climax.

You know what would be great? If we all just stopped paying property taxes and THEY ARE OUT OF A JOB. It would be really funny seeing them kiss our butts for one day. One week of no taxes from everyone to show who is boss.
Make it a month...and watch them cry and beg for our money so they have 26 servants feeding two kids in the White House, while the POTUS puts on a weekly WEDS. mandatory party based on Taxpayers' money.

i REALLY WISH THE AMERICANS WOULD REVOLT, AND THEIR EMPLOYERS AND not PAY TAXES FOR one month, JUST TO SHOW THE POLTICIANS THE REDUCTION IN THEIR PAY, HOW THEY DEPEND ON US, JUST GOING ONE MONTH WITH NO ONE TO RELY ON FOR TAXES

make it three months and they will file for unemployment and feel the pain.

That goes to show you the R or D after your name doesn't mean a damn thing. Do your homework before voting.

My grandfather died at age 92 swearing the Republicans' "were the way to go!" We were always taught to pull a straight ticket for Democrats since Kennedy.

He'd shit in his grave knowing how this country turned out...and he died in the '70s. I wish he were alive to tell the policiticians what they need to know.

It's all about their money...regardless of what party you are talking about. Read today about Viloscky - man, he brought the pork home, but will be eating baloney soon.

And hey, Scorpion, I pulled straight Demobrats all of most of my life...until I got EDUCATED about what it means to split the votes on who or those that are reputable. The last time I pulles a straight Demo ticket natiionally, locally, and in every election was just a few years ago. I got smart since then.

Do you know what the "downfall" is? Sadly, after these care3er politicians retire...no one taught the political process, how to baqlance a check book or plain old economics in school.

Grampa in politics will retire and die off. The sad story is....their sorry kids won't want any part of the political field, cuz if they were so smart, they would know how crooked the system is, an if they had real integregrity, they wouldn't risk prison time. That's the truth.''

Why was it so important for Scorpion to know when I last was a "dumbell" to pull the lever for "straight democrates"?

That's as low as I evcer went, pulling a straight party. Fluck the party; THAT'S WHY IL and IN compete for top political corruption. I think INdiana will be ahead after this latest primary/election in IL. They just don't learn.
