‘The Book of Mormon’ riots kill blasphemers in Utah

By DAVID D. KIRKLAND and GERALD F. BURNS
Published: April 1, 2011

As religious violence breaks out again in Provo in a controversy over the new Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon, a local imam has been describing how he had to run for his life after being accused of singing the praises of the show.

Three persons including a police officer were killed after Mormon students rioted over a play considered by them to be blasphemous and insulting to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, police and teachers said Friday.

Students of Brigham Young University went on a rampage late Thursday, after a drama critic from the Provo Daily Herald wrote a laudatory review of the musical.

“Two people and a police officer have been killed in the violence while the local police station and everything inside including ammunition have been burned by the rioters”, Provo police chief Randall Grayson told reporters outside the devastated police station. He said about 20 others were badly wounded, including a police officer, who suffered a deep cut to the head after being struck with a heraldic trumpet. Police had arrested 25 people and opened an investigation, he added.

“The students began chanting Joseph Smith Akbar when the imam appeared, and they pursued him to lynch him”, a witness who wished to remain anonymous told an AP reporter who visited the town on Friday. “The imam escaped in taking refuge in the local police station but hundreds of angry Mormon students attacked and set fire to the premises after the police refused to hand him over,” the witness said. The current whereabouts of the imam are not known.

This is the second time in a week in the mainly Mormon city of Provo that an allegation of blasphemy against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has sparked violent protests and an attack on the police.

I merely took an actual article about the Muslim reaction to the Florida preacher who burned the Koran and replaced all instances of Muslim violence with instances of Mormon violence, and all mentions of the Koran with mentions of The Book of Mormon musical.
A sad but indisputable fact is that if I had simply posted the article unaltered, not a single person on this or any other forum would have even blinked, and not a single person would have, even for a second, considered that the article was an April Fool’s Day spoof.
That I guarantee, 100%.

When one single, solitary person, the Pastor Terry Jones, burned a Koran in Florida, President Obama had this to say:

President Barack Obama condemned a US pastor's burning of the Koran, after violent protests at what he called an act of "extreme intolerance and bigotry" left 17 dead in Afghanistan.
………
"The desecration of any holy text, including the Koran, is an act of extreme intolerance and bigotry," Obama said in a statement honoring those killed in the attacks.

http://www.christianpost.com/news/south-park-meets-mormons-the-book-of-mormon-musical-entertains-shocks-on-broadway-49546/

Want blasphemy? How about a choir of Ugandans uniting their voices to sing lines like this one: “F*** you, God.” Apparently the evangelism efforts of the two naïve Mormon missionaries at the center of the musical didn’t work out as planned.
Want character assassination? Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founder Joseph Smith makes a brief appearance, as does Adolf Hitler.
“The Book of Mormon’s” website says, “This hilarious Broadway musical about a pair of mismatched Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that’s about as far from Salt Lake City as you can get.”

When half the country and most all of the critics fell all over themselves singing the praises of The Book of Mormon, a Broadway musical that displays extreme bigotry toward the Mormon religion, and for all practical purposes desecrates their most holy text, our affirmative-action pandering punk of a president had this to say:

.................................................

Barry was apparently none too concerned over what the reaction of the Mormons would be, and felt no particular need to speak in their defense in order to ensure public safety.
But I guess even He realizes that it's safer to publicly defend, infantilize, and decry attacks on a particular religion when that religion is populated by bat-shit crazies.

I guess President Obama won't be having to make a statement about this after all....

'Book Of Mormon' Musical Called Surprisingly Sweet
Quote :
NEW YORK (RNS) A Ugandan villager in the new Broadway musical from the creators of South Park offers a plaintive love song about paradise -- and the object of her yearning is none other than Utah's capital.

"Salvation has a name -- Salt Lake-y City," croons Nabalungi (played by Nikki M. James) in "The Book of Mormon," which opened for previews at the Eugene O'Neill Theater in February and ended with a standing ovation.

The lyrics are ironic, of course, as is much of the story written and directed by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, in conjunction with Robert Lopez, who helped compose the award-winning musical "Avenue Q."

Sure enough, the production, which opens March 24, is bawdy and irreverent. Many believers would see it as a blasphemous assault on scriptures, much like the pair's animated TV series. But the satire and tone were not as hostile as many Mormons feared.

"I was expecting to be offended," said Anne Christensen, a 22-year-old LDS New Yorker, "but was pleasantly surprised by how incredibly sweet it was."

Her mother, Janet Christensen, added: "It's not G-rated, but they treated us with affection. And they did their homework."

Parker and Stone have said they love Mormons "and it showed," said Graceann Bennett, a Mormon from Chicago. "It was like loving teasing. I don't think you could get to that sweetness in today's world without a serious dose of irreverence."

Bennett especially liked the fact that the characters were "real Mormons," not fringe groups such as polygamists. There was not a single mention of plural marriage, "Big Love," Mitt Romney or Proposition 8. And, though there is a glimpse of "Mormon underwear," there are no jokes about it.

"Americans think Mormons are all the same," Bennett said. "This shows diversity and that Mormons can grow and change in their faith."

No, He won't, because, as I said, even He realizes that Mormons will not be going around beheading people and destroying neighborhoods (which is more than can be said for a certain other religion, which shall not be named).

http://www.suite101.com/content/the-book-of-mormon-musical-and-mormon-satire-a362916
Although the play may indeed have positive intentions, most Mormons are likely to label it as sacrilegious, offensive, condescending, and to say that it serves only to perpetuate long-held erroneous stereotypes continuing to misinform those unfamiliar with Mormon beliefs.
………
Still, critics (many of them understandably Mormons) claim that the musical is evidence that the mocking of Mormon beliefs, especially on Broadway, reflects a rising tide of religious intolerance and that to do the same to Jews or Muslims would be unthinkable.

http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/theater/sure_to_offend_and_succeed_UBT3xckTxJe15oKPECyIyI
… the songs are tuneful and very funny.
Unfortunately, I can't print any titles because most of them contain words that are not permitted in a family newspaper.
"Offhand, I can't think of any song they can do at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade," says a source. "Or on 'Good Morning America.' "
It'll be interesting to see how CBS handles "The Book of Mormon" on the Tonys. The buzz is such that, at this point, the show has to be considered a Tony Award contender. If it's nominated for Best Musical, it'll be fun to see how close to the edge "The Book of Mormon" will go on the telecast.
Here's hoping it goes right over, making the far-too-family-friendly Tonys watchable for the first time in years.

A good glimpse of the attitude of those who praise this musical. This is first time I have ever seen something described as “far-too-family-friendly”, not to mention having that description being used pejoratively.

He shouldn't have to be bothered to make a statement over something so trivial. We should just let Him get back to the important work that you elected Him to do, like...

http://www.cfr.org/world/candidates-military-tribunals-guantanamo-bay/p14751

President Obama says Guantanamo should be closed and habeas corpus (AP) should be restored for the detainees. He says the United States should have “developed a real military system of justice that would sort out the suspected terrorists from the accidentally accused.”
In June 2008, Obama praised (NYT) a Supreme Court decision allowing Guantanamo prisoners to challenge their detention in civilian courts. He called the ruling "an important step toward re-establishing our credibility as a nation committed to the rule of law, and rejecting a false choice between fighting terrorism and respecting habeas corpus."
In February 2008, Obama criticized the prosecution of six Guantanamo detainees charged with involvement in the 9/11 attacks. He said the trials are "too important to be held in a flawed military commission system that has failed to convict anyone of a terrorist act since the 9/11 attacks and that has been embroiled in legal challenges" (SFChron). Instead, Obama said, the men should be tried in a U.S. criminal court or by a military court-martial.

Obama reinstates military tribunals

Remember the fierce moral urgency of change?
President Obama announced Monday that military trials will resume for detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, saying he wants to “broaden our ability to bring terrorists to justice.”
The president issued an executive order outlining the changes Monday afternoon, as Defense Secretary Robert Gates rescinded a January 2009 ban against bringing new charges against terror suspects in the military commissions.

I'd like to know what the United States of America would do if a bible, any bible was burned as was by the imbecile that caused murdering of American soldiers, and would the U.S. react the same way as these idiots?

Shame on the idiot in Florida who withdrew before, but now burned the Koran. It's against our morals, ethics, and denounced in the U.S.

I want to know why we don't hole this so called, half-arsed "Pastor" responsible for burning the Koran, and resulting in the death of our troops and civil unrest in a country where they are so damn brainwashed, you should know better to protect the troops in a war we shouldn't be in, and see no end in.

As far as Obama, stick the Billion up his arse. Money can't buy you anymore.

Every public hearing...."MY ADVISORS INFORMED ME...."

Yeah, what's your opinion and YOUR BRAIN, Obama?

Vacations, basketball, bowling, trips, trips and more trips with the wife, grammaw, kids out of school and "a close friend"..no name given.

You can raise three billion...haven't even finished your term most of half-way...show no leadership.

Enjoy your lifestyle and pay the billion back to lower the debt and lies you told.
He won't win...I guarantee you that.

Donald Trump is smarter ten times more...when you fluck with his money and he has dealt with overseas, and you know he means business and who can compare. When you infringe on one's successful life, that worked hard, has relations with overseas, and was told we are the laughing stock of the world...

Trump has my vote. Work ethic and he knows his shits. He is a leader, not a follower and show me who is better than that.

He doesn't need your campaign money, your patronage, your freaking air force one...hasn't had time or will find time for golf, bowling, basketball, playing parties and time to observe Thomas Edison that contributed far more than MLK did....He's got my vote, D. Independent or a freaking "R".

He's about business, he has the connections to other countries and speaks his mind. To me, that is a leader. What have we got to loose voting for him.

The rest can go to hell as far as running for POTUS. Trump has his money, pissed off at how our USA is flucking up, and doesn't need your airplane.

That's what I want...someone if he needs 6 billion, he doesn't need your money; doesn't need to sell himself; he is self-funded, doesn't need false lies, hope, he can fund his own campaign. That is waht I WANT! Obamabie..you don't stand a chance in hell of winning re-election. Take you campaign money back to Hyde Park, IL and spoil the kids and your wife....while dwindling them back down to the real life of POOR PEOPLE. Two faced, A-holes.

Obama, you haven't done a damn thing and the "hope and change" shit was just that,..."SHIT". I want a smart business guy that never looses, and someone who isn't afraid to speak his mind. Sharp....won't listed to his "advisors" to deliver a speech...he's too damn smart to do that, much less use a damn teleprompter or put on shows for kids in school using one.
You and Michelle can take your skinny azz and fat azz back to Chicago.

Typical Bling, Bling.

Because you have cherry-picked quotes from 2 Mormons does not mean that everyone of the Mormon faith is okey-dokey with the musical. The fact that they have not beheaded anyone or burned Salt Lake City to the ground is a sign of a tolerant religion, not a sign that they have no reason to be offended by it.

No Islamic sacred texts were 'burned' in the case of the Danish Mohammed cartoons, either.

... why is it such a good idea now?

It's not a good idea, but Congress has left the Administration with no other choice.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/khalid_sheik_mohammed_to_be_tried_by_military_commission_officials_say/2011/04/04/AFhlS8cC_story.html?wprss=rss_congress

Quote :
Federal law enforcement officials said the decision not to hold civilian trials was considered inevitable within the Justice Department once Congress barred the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States for any reason, including prosecution, which previously was possible.

“It’s fair to say that was the final nail in the coffin,’’ said one source familiar with the case, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. “It was just never, never going to happen.’’

Quote :
In announcing the decision, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said he will return the case to the Defense Department “reluctantly” and blamed the move on Congress, which has erected a series of barriers to bringing detainees to the United States, even for prosecution.

“As the president has said, those unwise and unwarranted restrictions undermine our counterterrorism efforts and could harm our national security,” Holder said. “Decisions about who, where and how to prosecute have always been — and must remain — the responsibility of the executive branch.”

It's simply disingenuous to blame Obama for any of this. This administration has tried everything to get the trials moved to civilian courts and to close Guantanamo. But Congress has blocked the President's and the Justice Department's efforts every step of the way.

From 2009...

Senate blocks transfer of Gitmo detainees

WASHINGTON — In a rare, bipartisan defeat for President Barack Obama, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to keep the prison at Guantanamo Bay open for the foreseeable future and forbid the transfer of any detainees to facilities in the United States.

Democrats lined up with Republicans in the 90-6 vote that came on the heels of a similar move a week ago in the House, underscoring widespread apprehension among Obama's congressional allies over voters' strong feelings about bringing detainees to the U.S. from the prison in Cuba.

Blame Congress, if you wish, but do not lay the blame on the Republicans in Congress at that time. Lay the blame where it belongs - on Obama's so-called congressional allies, who searched and searched and searched, but just couldn't manage to find their testicles when Obama needed it most.

Guantanamo is merely an inanimate object - it is neither 'good' nor 'bad' on its face.
The only quibble everyone seemed to have with it in the Bush years was that the wrong people were in charge.
Now that the 'right' people are in charge, why is it even an issue?

Although he had absolutely nothing to do with the killings and beheadings, you still blame the pastor for the deaths simply because he did something provocative that may have contributed to people being killed half a world away?
Have you ever considered that the Muslim murderers might be outraged over something completely different, like, I don't know... maybe the fact that Obama is bombing a Muslim country that did nothing whatsoever to threaten the United States?
Wouldn't you be just a wee bit more upset over seeing your fellow brothers in faith being killed by indiscriminate bombs than you would over seeing a single book being burned?
I know I would.
That's very odd, very backward thinking.
You might want to reconsider your theory.

Afghans Avenge Florida Koran Burning, Killing 12
Quote :
MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan - Stirred up by three angry mullahs who urged them to avenge the burning of a Koran at a Florida church, thousands of protesters on Friday overran the compound of the United Nations in this northern Afghan city, killing at least 12 people, Afghan and United Nations officials said.

Unable to find Americans on whom to vent their anger, the mob turned instead on the next-best symbol of Western intrusion - the nearby United Nations headquarters. "Some of our colleagues were just hunted down," said a spokesman for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, Kieran Dwyer, in confirming the attack.
