well folks its a sad task that is before the democratic committeeman this week as they must elect a replacement both for the remainder of the term and on the ballot spot vacated by the passing of kathy pucalik. (i believe the chairman has the authority but as chosen to agree with the committee persons vote for the ballot slot)

truth is kathy was one of a kind and isnt replaceable. in that she was always underestimated and much maligned, but grew to become one of the more successfull council persons and the largest vote getter (thus the most popular) of all the at large candidates.

according to the times three people have applied thus far.

janet venecz has run the edison crime watch for several years and has been active in the community and recently fell a few dozen votes shy of the 4th district nomination.

carolyn jackson fell a few thousand shy of the at large nomination, garnering less then half of the votes that pucalik did in the same race.

phil golden, although not as active in the community has been on the economic development board, appointed to the position by the mayor and fell a few hundred votes shy of the 4th district nomination.
now venecz has ties to the dem party in the city and has worked with the mayor along time.

golden has worked with the mayor thru his board, but most recently has been aligned with mike repay who has set himself up to be a critic of the mayor, and supported the failed candidacy of oscar sancez in the spring.

meanwhile jackson, while yes she has been active in the community, has ties to team hammond which exists it seems only to take pot shots at the mayor, and try to obstruct the administration at every turn it can. not to mention, the republican opponant of the mayor, is a founding member, and former president of team hammond.

seems pretty clear to me here. if ya support what the city has been doing in the past 8 years and ya support the mayors re-election. there's only one real choice here. to support the person thats shown she can work with the mayor, and at the same time will stand up for the citizens of the community (as she most recently did with citizens near repays bar over a parking matter that is discussed in another thread). and support the candidate who actually came closest to successfully putting her name on the ballot in november at the ballot box
so while ya keep hearing this fourth place crap being touted remember
