I happened to come across a letter to the editor and found this very interesting. Especially because it was written by a pilot, and should make us aware of what happens or could happen with Gary's Non-functioning airport.

Think of the children
There have been newspaper editorials about how the proposed South Suburban Airport is going to be an economic engine. They are written by people who don't know anything about aircraft.
This will be a cargo airport to bring in foreign products to intermodals so they can be distributed throughout the Midwest. This will put more American companies in bankruptcy and increase the trade deficit to more than $250 billion.
There are two groups pushing the airport. One group is headed by Jesse Jackson Jr., who was named by a newspaper as one of the 15 most corrupt politicians in the country. The second group is the governor, the Will County Board and the Illinois Department of Transportation. Gov. Pat Quinn, local elected officials and some Will County Board members are taking money from the intermodals. IDOT's project at MidAmerica Airport was supposed to bring jobs. Its failure is costing St. Clair County $350 million.
I am a pilot and retired electronic engineer. Commercial aircraft have from two to four engines each of which average 25,000 horsepower. They burn a hydrocarbon fuel just as your car. But jet aircraft have no pollution devices.
They are dumping tons of deadly pollutants, ignoring the Kyoto clean air protocols.
One of the deadly pollutants is carbon nanoparticles, which affects your genetics.
Beecher is only 2 miles from the end of the runway. These planes will be 300 feet over the schools! Beecher is never mentioned in any articles about the proposed airport.
Park Ridge, which is 5 miles from O'Hare, is bombarded by noise. That municipality is taking judicial action.
I am just hoping the politicians can think of the children and people instead of "pay to play" money and stop this disaster.

Ryanair would fit in very nicely at the Gary-Chicago Airport
Ryanair wants to come to America... and I want it here too.
Ryanair prefers to fly to smaller or secondary airports to reduce costs and fees. For example Ryanair does not fly to the main Oslo-Gardermoen airport, it flies to Sandefjord Torp, 60 miles from Oslo and the airline refers to the airport as "Oslo-Torp", despite its distance from the city.

The vast majority of the products that are imported into this country come here by boat, because that is the most cost effective way to move freight. I think the author of this letter to the editor is unhappy with the location of the airport and simply fearmongering to increase opposition to the plan. His comments about nanoparticles strike me as BS also.

Yes, I was all for that, until I came across that letter to the Editor. So, you don't agree, Paul?
Well, I guess you have a point there, if I'm looking through the crystal ball, what worse can happen with the pollution, the killings, the what'eva.
I always believed that Gary should just settle for cargo and forget about passenger planes. It's failed so many times in the past, that this must only be a real solution and the MJackson is just an unrealistic approach of reviving that place.
It won't be a "Graceland," if that is what Rudy Clay is hoping for with that rubber stamp. How far does $10,000 go? Most people owe that on their charge cards. How impressive.

If they can find something that would both be profitable and environmentally friendly that would be great.
