Ohio Legalizes Casinos

Four Hoosier casinos could lose nearly $300 million a year from the added Ohio competition. The state stands to lose as much as $103 million in taxes, and the communities that will lose gambling visitors already are preparing for smaller budgets and belt-tightening.

Something else to take into consideration is the cost to operate these boats opposed to operating on land.

Illinois persists in clinging to a long, if unattractive tradition of looking down our noses at Indiana. If our recent record of corruption has done nothing to shake this bias, now comes the realization that Hoosier government maintains faith with its taxpayers in a way we can only envy.

Indiana has gone from a $700 million debt to a $1 billion reserve. Its low-tax ...

I think most everyone agrees there has to be a better way. Spending $millions for yet another reassessment seems pretty stupid to me. As many here know I have been a proponent of a 2 tier flat tax on, at the very least homesteaded, property. And sometimes business property taxes are really more of a guess & an agreement such as in the case of the casinos, the mills, and BP and at least in Lake County ...

After reading Daniels' response to mothers of the police, I came off feeling he's a bit arrogant. I admit I haven't known much about Daniels, but some responses to the audience kind of made me mad. He seems a bit "assuming, critical, and insensitive" to some people/groups begging for help. What is your opinion? Just curious... This is just a portion in today's article:

I feel so bad for those whose homes went under water. I feel proud and sad and bad for those who volunteered. I feel remorseful that we don't have a common-sense governor who brags about a "rainy day surplus," yet, denies funding for what is crucial to end the flooding/homes, businesses and lives.

Not to mention the Borhman getting flooded, causing accidents.

What is he thinking?

Some students are totally screwed come 2011 now

These public schools are now acting like they are private schools. Maybe they need to get off the Govt dole if they are going to say that students need to take 4 years of math and 2 yrs of a foreign language, just to have the privilege of attending their schools

This really scares me, this reeks of elitism

I know kids who despise math and ...

I suppose this is a good idea. And if it takes off I suppose we could do the same thing around the interstates as well. But my real question, which of course the Times failed to ask anybody, is how far north/ south of the fiber line will benefit? Wouldn't you also need fiber lines going from the main route to the businesses? So unless the business is located adjacent to the toll road there are still ...
